So happy to see this, I think its when I saw him at The Meistersaal in Berlin as part of the Dali Lama season, it was such a small and personal concert and so moving. He played alone and it was very special.
If you don´t allow mistakes in music then you have no grasp of art. Listen to Miles Davis and listen to false notes, boy that is so cool so ultra sonic. Listen to Stanley Clarck play the acustic bass you go nuts with all those spacey notes growing out of his bass, probably a thousand notes are crooked. Cool man. Jazz allows that kind of artistic moves. You still have to do some hard listening man, to apprceciate the beauty of sound, you have a long way to go.
In an age when musicians are so reliant on technology, this reminds us what great song writing is all about. Any truly great song should be capable of being stripped to its skeleton. This along with all of Sylvians best work just goes to prove the point. BTW, have always loved the studio version.
I'm not liking the guru getup...and from what I read, David didn't necessarily like it either. That being said, this is such a wonderful song. I have yet to find something that I don't like from Mr. Sylvian.
I totally agree with you - this is the first time I have heard this song, used to be a big Japan fan going back 28 years (gulp!), but this shows Mr Sylvian's talent off just grand!
Awesome!! I cannot find the words to describe my feeling for this song. Silvian outperfomes any good words for him such as beatiful, unique, strong, excellet, cool, superb...
Amazing! Never thought he could play the song with just a guitar. The original sounds fairly complex, with all the great musicians doing their magic on it...
Beautiful. I thank my brother for turning me onto DS 23 yrs ago when I was 17. Still listen to "Gone to Earth" alongside "Snow Borne Sorrow". I'm desperate to see him live after flying to Lisbon last yr to gig that was cancelled. Broke my heart. I love what Albert Rutz wrote about Sylvian: "most of his musical works is heart-wrenchingly beautiful. It requires patience, stillness and finely tuned antennas. But once you break through, you'll discover the beauty of a strange but lush new planet" x
had a big relationship with a girl when this album and track came out. Played it for ages when we split up and haven't heard it or seen it or played it since. Suppose i hid the pain of splitting up. Forgot how beautiful it is and how great Sylvian was/is.
shame , i advertised a spare ticket on the comments on world citizen {live version} video. Also i was there at the festival hall and there was a spare seat right in front of me ,what a waste.
God Gregor, get over yourself! Having seen him last night in Edinburgh for the 4th time I know that he will retain the essence of each track, but also the emotion, and if the are the odd chord changes, well who really gives a toss. They sound great, you can lose yourself in them and the time shoots by. Chord changes? Jeeze!
Dear Cocteau, I would honestly love to be in your position to see David 4 (!!!) times at concert. And maybe I am a bit strict about chords, but... Anyway, I am sure the maestro has found the fitting chords long time ago! Anyone here to post new stuff form the actual tour? I promise not to criticize, and to listen with the heart! 8)
BTW, any musician would be honored with fans like you.
Great and tenderversion of a incredible song, altough maybe some chords changed here and ther it doesnt matter at all, it is all the same song in my ears.
I love this song for almost 20 years now. I did not know about an acustic version. Sry, but it is horrible!!! There are false chords!!! Maaaaaaaaaan. I am absolutely disappointed. Even poets have to do clean work. Remove it, do it again, that should work better, I am absolutely sure.
Its live music . Get a life , i suppose you hate all cover versions. This man is serious in what he does. Sometimes you need to listen to a song a few times to really get to like it.
oh, well u actually are right. I have to listen to music some times before discovering the hidden charme of a piece. And I have no problems with cover versions, nor live music nor unplugged versions. What strikes me really hard, is the following: I do know the original quite well. The harmony structure is original, but I can follow it, understand it. I come from Vienna, so my feeling for good and wrong structure are strongly influenced by classic music.
The point: He sings "and only you could know" (TCR 01:11.37) Instead of A flat minor he should have played B flat major That hurts, sorry, can´t help. What is wors is the fact, that this is no momentary laps, which can happen on stage, it is sistematic as you can her at TCR 01:13:34 That´s a pity.
@gregonline6506 It's his song, he can play it any way he wants. Dylan, for example, almost never plays his songs live the way they sound on records. In so far this video is concerned, I do prefer the original. But "false chords" - false compared to what?
Good point. What sounds right and what sounds "false" or dissonant? The history of music shows that more and more "original" things sound "good" to us. Our musical language is growing (the blue note e.g.).
In that very case, my personal feeling was dissapointment. The harmony structure of a song creates a special kind of flow inside of me, and this flow was disrupted by these chords. So this is where I cried out: wrong.
@gregonline6506 Whats false chord anyway? Chords in this one still deal with the sang melody and as the author of song he can mes with it as much as he like- we mortals can only deal with it.:) But I know what you complain about- personally I just find this performace nice vibe against the original take.
Hi Chris. This is a beautiful song, it's one of my favorites. I can only seem to find the live version of Brilliant Trees (which is EXCELLENT, btw), didn't Mr. Sylvian make a studio version?
hey there berghw ... you looking for a fight? :-) the best recording has to be the original vinyl version. the musical setting is outstanding and can not be compared with this 'live version' - which is beautiful, don't get me wrong. but anyone out there that enjoys this, please, find the original 'brilliant trees' album and this, the title track. such composition and instrumental arrangement as features on the album can never be replicated. simple.
I surely have the vinyl versions and heard it over a thousand time. This one however must be how it was originaly composed by David; sorry prefers this much, much more.
it is a very beautiful version ... but return to the rare acoustic performances at the time and this is different ... but please don't misunderstand me ... all musicians, music develops with time ... it's amazing to be able to witness that development ... glad you are as passionate about sylvians music as i am!

Kudos to David Sylvian.

The point: He sings "and only you could know" (TCR 01:11.37) Instead of A flat minor he should have played B flat major That hurts, sorry, can´t help. What is wors is the fact, that this is no momentary laps, which can happen on stage, it is sistematic as you can her at TCR 01:13:34 That´s a pity.
gregonline6506 4 years ago
I'm bound to say that while you're entitled to your own opinion, I think you're being a bit nit picky here.
For me it's all about the feeling of the song, and what he plays works on that level.
Listen with your heart instead of your head!
Besides, it's not like he hit a sharp is it?

Furthermore, I would suggest having a constructive reply, rather than picking on someone who obviously doesn't speak English as their native language.
If you don't agree with their comment, formulate a constructive argument for a contrary standpoint.
