I also agree with him when, in the final chapters of his book, he touches on why EUROPE and not, say, China conquered the New World and industrialized. He mentioned the decentralization of power in Europe (again, thanks to geography) as compared to China. In China, one emperor's decision can set back society by decades (the destruction of the treasure ships). Not so for Europe. Decentralization of power is key.

To lay it all on geography is indeed leaving out the role our ancestors played in all of this. IF it isn't all just geography, I wonder what mayor societies the new guinea people could've built based on the entirely different ecological system. Personally, I think the divergence across the world is caused by a combination of Institutions (as defined by Douglass North and Geography. Both of these are the deep determinants of growth. They create other determinants, including nutrition (different diet structures), technology (the hallmark of modern growth), social structures (hierarchy of values, culture, religion). Different areas are endowed with different geographical constraints, but human choice in institutions are critical as well.

I pretty much agree with Diamond's thesis. It's well-reasoned and very good. I also agree with him when, in the final chapters of his book, he touches on why EUROPE and not, say, China conquered the New World and industrialized. He mentioned the decentralization of power in Europe (again, thanks to geography) as compared to China. In China, one emperor's decision can set back society by decades (the destruction of the treasure ships). Not so for Europe. Decentralization of power is key.
