  • we have to stop depending on handouts. its live with dignity or die! if aid was to be stopd we wud be forced to stand on our own two feet, most think they are not strong until being strong is there only option.

  • @acavideo Well she is African, and is clearly intellectual, ambitious, civilized and creative . So why would she "admit" something that she (and anyone who has FIRST HAND experience of Africa) knows for sure to be untrue?

  • She is wrong, when you have those from the western world stealing all of the resources of Africa, aid is their reasonable service.

  • More free market economics!!? Is she serious?

  • she's wrong. Aid is definitely NOT killing Africa.. she fools the reader into thinking that there is a true causal link. Sure, aid has been inefficient in some respects, but don't cut all of it!

The PROBLEM here is not aid... but one of governance in African countries...

  • @acavideo Your comment is so racist and offensive. There are many educated Africans on the African continent. You fail to acknowledge the role the western world has in the problems on the African continent. The western world keeps African nations POOR due to the so called debt repayment. The whole foreign aid industry just keeps Africans poor.

  • She is so right... aid is killing africa...if the West really want to help they should INVEST in african countries

  • This lady is an uncle tom really

  • @chatman48 You really have no understanding of what she is saying if you believe that. Dambisa is a Maroon, she wants to run away from the plantation and make it on her own no matter how "good" Massa treats her. Whereas Uncle Tom is quite comfortable to sit up in Massa's house eating their scraps and being their lapdog. Those African leaders who dance to the tune of international donors and neglect their people are the real Uncle Toms.

  • As for Moyo, she is naive in thinking that unrestricted free market economics will build up Africa, or that aid can be simply cut in a five-year period without disastrous consequences. Especially under today's economic climate, the stash of money that she imagines is up for grabs to any African nation from foreign lenders simply does not exist. While espousing these market policies, she somehow cites China and India as examples, despite the strong role their governments play in those economies.

  • @acavideo Pt 3 Actually propped up most violent despots in the region for geopolitical gain, wreaking havoc on economies such as that of Zaire under Mobutu.

You clearly know next to nothing about African history, and rather subscribe to the racist assumptions which permeate your culture. You live in an age of information, and education is at your fingertips if only you had the motivation to learn. I think you would find that educating yourself can be quite rewarding, if only you would try.

  • @acavideo Pt 2. they were so unconcerned with an organized transfer of power that they left a vacuum such that more people could seize control and exploit the country. Your claim that African nations have had centuries to "get their act together" is absolutely ludicrous, as most African nations were not independent until after World War II, and South Africa was ruled by whites until 1994. Not to even mention the exploitation of these nations under the Reagan doctrine, and the fact that the USA

  • @acavideo Pt. 1 Contrary to your unfounded racist assertions, Africa is not unable to modernize due to some lack of intellect, nor is the continent overpopulated (Africa has the LOWEST population density of any continent). If the real question is "why they need aid in the first place," I would look at the colonial history of Africa, which you clearly have no background in. Once these brutal regimes were forced to leave (after centuries of systematically destroying African civilizations),

  • @Rasxilinx, thank you for the info and the aid should be welcomed and used possitively. with regards to my comment, without sounding arrogant be more specific and say Eritrea's stance on aid, concerned because of the possible side effects has not been mentioned in the clip, but I am afraid I can't answer your question.

  • she speaks so fast

  • @leafclash That's what happens when you have a functional brain. Check out Obama's cadence for contrast.

  • @leafclash that's a sign of nervousness

  • she forgot to mention Eritrea

  • @ThePodarek

EU's total aid package to Eritrea in coming years (2010-2013) totals € 115 million

What will the money be used for?

    • The support mainly targets projects that help support food security and the transport sector.

Source: Google "EU aid to Eritrea"

  • She makes perfect sense!!!

  • the only thing i would disagree with her is that i would not trust government to do the job, rather industry and educatoin

  • @soychidoese Don't trust this lady she's been educated in the west and work for the world bank. She's not talking about Africa having its own self determination. She wants outsiders to invest and control Africa. All the resources are in Africa. My sisters and bothers don't need non African outsiders there. They need educated Africans in the diaspora to come with the understanding that black and Africa first before any other groups or countries.

  • @arronnov ... all I have to say is that yes there needs to have more education in Africa as well as sterner policies against corruption.....

  • @soychidoese Who's education? And for who's benefit? Education is suppose to benefit a people's present and future. The education of the western world has help benefit whites and keep them in power over African people in Africa America and across the globe. Education or knowledge of self is suppose to benefit one's survival in the present and future. As long as African people let other groups of people determine their paradigm of thought we will continue to be slaves of our enemies.

  • @arronnov how then do you define beneficial education?

  • @soychidoese Education is suppose to be a extension of a groups culture to secure a groups own survival today and tomorrow. Guess who's paradigm culture and worldview that African people have been trained condition and forced to accept as their own the past 1500 to present day. Western whites and western Asian Arabs. We are striving to be like people who have been our enemies and oppressors.

  • @arronnov indeed, but how then would it play out for the prosperity of the continent, if prosperity is an aim?

  • @soychidoese Do you know any African history? I not talking about the version where the western white man labels my ancestors as savage primitive uncivilized and etc. Keep in mind that the white man labeled every indigenous people across the planet he came in contact with these words put downs to prop himself up. You have heard of Egypt Nubia Ethiopia Songhai Ghana Mali Great Zimbabwe Zulu's and etc.

  • @arronnov not much, that is why Im doing this research

  • @soychidoese Its has to be Black Africans with our own self determination world view and consciousness. That's in the motherland and across the planet where Africans descendants happen to live.

  • @arronnov indeed....

    describe to me this worldview

  • @soychidoese Why? The western white man point out and forces his own everyone he's come in contact with and if you don't agree or go along. He will label you as radical racist separatist or black nationalist. His most useful method is to force his world view by force invasion imperialism colonialism and etc. Everybody in the world is suppose to think and be like him at all cost. If not war coups and conflicts are coming your way.

  • @arronnov you have not answered my question... what is this worldview?

  • @soychidoese My worldview is different from the western white worldview! Study Ancient African cultures and history. That's where my worldview comes from in essence. Through the history and cultures of my forefathers ancestors and blood. A course the western white man believes he's the authority and only author of African culture and history. In his books nothing every came from Africa and its people.

  • @arronnov you have not answered my question... what is this worldview?

  • @arronnov you have not answered my question... what is this world view?

  • awesome, great words.

  • AID is this fact : take the money of poor people of rich countries and give it to rich people of poor countries who bring back this money to rich countries for the benefict of rich people of this rich countries who organise this MAFIA

  • Why is her hair straight? It is supposed to be kinky. This means she straightens her hair -- and she is not proud to be African nor Black.

  • @sterlingtaste Did you ask her if she wasn't proud to be black? You sound stupid. Some girls straighten their hair bcuz they feel it is easier to manage or they just like diversity. Worry about your own appearance and get off hers.

  • @GGLebo23 African women have been doing their hair for hundred of thousand of yrs without straightening their hair with unnatural dangerous chemicals.

  • @sterlingtaste just because people straighten their hair doesn't mean they aren't proud of being black.

  • Isha Sesay vs Dambisa Moyo for Sexiest African woman alive.

  • Yes, Dambisa's message is not new BUT it is nice to see a young Afircan woman discussing this issue. I am tired of white liberals talking about Africa. It is nice to see an African woman someone with the life experience of living in Africa to talk about Africa!

  • The only problem here is that all the help to Africa will never do any good, unless the internal conflicts end.

  • Sorry but she hasn't said anything that hasnt been said before. President Klaus (Czech Rep.), and the like, have been saying for years that foreign investment is THE solution to the African crisis rather than foreign aid which, although helps fight poverty, is not a panacea.

  • There's been foreign investment in Africa for the past 600yrs by Europeans and western Asian Arabs. They investment is about pulling out as most of the natural resources as possible for pennies or nothing. Now Asia is in on the game. This lady is crazy. The foreign investment goal is to control the resources and take over the whole of Africa. Their not building Africa like they help build up Germany or Japan after they help destroy them.

  • Economy will not save Afrika. Economy and technology corrupts people.

  • Aid industry? Foreign aid is a multi profit making business not a charity.

  • Dambisa is badass!

  • god bless her, I need to get this book

  • nice handjob, thanks

  • Wow. She's sexy and intellectual. I'm going read her book as soon as I get my hands on it.

  • Dambisa Moyo > Michelle Obama

  • @captainmario42

    Post is win

  • I just became a Dambisa Moyo fan... Gotta read Dead Aid!

  • damisa you are very right.teach a man to fish and not to receive.

  • Dambisa maybe you are afraid to just say it all, AID was meant to sustain the economical, political and social subjugation of African nation.

Never ever in a history of human nature, can you feed a man who is completely nonproductive.

I believe the funders were well aware of what they are doing.

Thanx Dambisa for bringing this mater to light, maybe Africa will get a cure from this AID.

I got my copy and just finish reading it.

  • Dr. Moyo is one of my idols. She criticizes policy, and does not focus on tearing down individuals. She is beautiful and intelligent -- you know too often women of color are portrayed as entertainers or sex symbols only. I am proud of this woman.

  • wow I'm impressed - an african woman; intelligent and beautiful. That is the way foward.

  • To infer that the validity of her argument may be undermined by her upbringing is idiotic. You can find plenty of rich state-worshipping liberals (welfare state apologists Ted Kennedy, Jeffrey Sachs and Bono are just three of many examples) who are on the opposite side. Moyo has infintely more credibility than those characters.

  • I would be a little more convinced about her perspective if she came from a more difficult background herself. She seems to have lived a fairly charmed life and hasn't experienced a lot of hardship herself to be able to really speak out on it. The people who are really suffering in Africa don't tend to come from a very privileged past.

  • So what you are basically saying is, only the poor & impoverish can uplift their country.... You have to examine the argument one makes a little more.

  • Your criticism doesn't make sense Bardgold. Otherwise the only way to obtain truth about poverty creation and alleviation would be from the poor. These are economic and social/political questions that are not associated with the quantity of ones wealth.

  • Or, instead of focusing on irrelevant factors, you could apply critical thinking to the actual content of her argument to evaluate it.

  • i agree with you Dambiso. its high time we became self sufficient. may be our governments will be more accountable.

  • Man, what a combination of beauty and intelligence!!!

  • We need you in Zambia and Africa to advise the govt to do in less depedent model you have articulated.

  • I'm also opposed to "aid" (code for structural adjustment) but Moyo promotes "direct foreign investment" which means surrender of natural resources to foreign corporations and repeal of laws protecting workers and the environment.

Aid vs Neo-liberalism is a false dichotomy. Africa needs to invest in itself with nationally or locally-owned corporations to exploit resources in an equitable way. Foreign "aid" and multinational encroachment are twin evils which both lead to foreign control.

  • I agree with you that the 'aid vs neo-liberalism' is a false dichotomy. However, I don't know that encouraging foreign direct investment is tantamount to giving up one's sovereignty as you suggest.

  • Don't fall for the aunt-tom. She has worked for the world bank and currently is a broad member of Lundin petrolem. She is a spy for western powers trying to get a strangle hold on the vast of natural resources for Europe/America. She been trained in Western schools and truly has no love for African people. We as Africans have to study history clearly and carefully. Somebody who looks like us is always sent in by our enemy. Rember that!!

  • "She is a spy for western powers trying to get a strangle hold on the vast of natural resources for Europe/America"

If she were doing that she wouldn't be singing the praises of China and to say she doesn't have love for her people? I don't know about that.

  • As a African person who represent African people to the fullest with righteous harmony balance and justice.I understand and study history especially the relationship of Africans with of people not indegious the continent. The history in the past 700yrs( I could go back futher but I just deal with the last 700yrs) Africans have trusted been reprogrammed to hate who we are and embrace others culture religion and etc.We have and continue to pay the price for not embraciing our culture and history.

  • "Africans have trusted been reprogrammed to hate who we are and embrace others culture religion and etc.We have and continue to pay the price for not embraciing our culture and history."

Well I thought Africans did. Also I don't think Dambisa is embracing other cultures but remaining true to her own culture and that is Africa is too rich in resources for her not to control them meaning government aid does nothing but foster dependency on that government.

  • Tanio is absolutely correct.

It does not take Goldman or a prestigious Harvard degree to realized Africa biggest disease is not AIDS it's AID...

Free Market Capitalism is the best path to prosperity my friend (take a look at what America accomplished in 200years).

Even my little nephew knows Africa is the richest in natural resources but oddly enough it can't manage to provide enough clean water? The problem simply no owned and operated African companies (EXXONshellCOVdebeersANGLO-BP)lol

  • "Free Market Capitalism is the best path to prosperity my friend (take a look at what America accomplished in 200years)."

And look at America now, I am not concerned with the past I am talking about now and ANGLO BP? what is that?! Also I wonder why people toss that free market capitalism word around and do they really know what they are talking about or just spouting what Peter Schiff or Ron Paul says.

  • I saw this video and video presentation on WETA. I am an African American and I thought this presentation was very enlighting. I was amazed at the speaker grasp of the problem in Africa Aid and her desire to see a change. I hope the new administration will take a look at how this country is providing aid. Thanks for a job well done.

  • It always makes me happy when African Americans get to see that Africa is full of intellectual people that are muffled by bad political descisions made by our leaders before. It reconnects us as black people to know that we are resurrecting to our former civilization dawning days. Thank you GasolineIndependence; for as a young African I have learnt from great African Americans aswell Dr. Carson and many more that have come before. For wisdom I learn from all our planets inhabitants.

  • People, people! Don't mind where she has been, who she worked for and thngs like that. But ask: Are her suggestions fit any developmental logical model? If yes say and if not repeat the latter.

    Fair?

  • This lady is very accurate in her thesis. I have said this for a long time. The majority of the aid filters back to white western companies and corporations. African Aid is an Industry that the intended target receives very little.

  • soo, her message seems logical and reasonable. but her former employers like Goldman Sachs and the World Bank can't be trusted...

  • Yes, keep on posting unsubtantiated comments - "seems logical and reasonable". Why do you think that? Do you think her experience as an economist in those institutions has not influenced her approach in any way? Her grasp of poltical economy and governance issues in narrow. I urge you to stop getting caught up in populist hubris.

  • i well remember in the 50's as a child helping raise money for Africa with a poor child with a bowl......it is 2009 and the same child is still begging....Bono/Gates are the problem....simply encouraging begging isn't helping and it never will but jolie/Madonna feel better having atrophy black kid is the problem tho i hardly fault the children for getting out of the rat hole of Africa.....hop a boat dude to Mexico, at least they have tacos

  • Dambisa Moyo has a great message simply stating that charity aid alone doesn't generate substantial economic growth and development in Africa, that there are other ways. I agree with her message and find her a beautiful, successful, empowering African woman.

  • Hey "Fatfuckinboyblitz" ahhh last time I checked, they didn't let ignorant fucks like you talk because you're too FUCKIN STUPID too! I wish I could spit on the poor excuse you are as a human being. Stupid muthafucka, learn you're fuckin history you piece of shit!

  • In addition, I may come off rash, but "Fatboyblitz" simply deserved such a response for his disgusting content and more importantly, his ignorance. Violence is never the answer to anything.

  • Hi wife. ( smile ) .

  • India? Really? According to the BBC 10,000 insolvent farmers have commited suicide this year and they have done so in each of the last ten years because they were too poor to pay off their debts. That's one hell of a success story.

  • your mother was a whore..

  • "you're a lazy bum for not doing your research properly "

So you are the self identified lazy bum? Shame.

  • Why don't you use evidence in an argument? What are you worried about? Why do you support Dambisa excatly?

  • hey "waivermaker" learn how to spell exactly, or maybe just try learning how to spell in general if you want to have an intelligent argument..

  • Why don't you ARGUE THE POINT? What is it EXACTLY about Dambisa's argument about an aid phase out that you support? - Given that current international private investment is massively on the wane?

  • What I notice here is that everyone jumps at this opportunity to be 'anti-western' etc. Calm down and look at the facts that aid has a role to play in promoting real wellbeing for LEDCs. Dambisa's arguments are shallow and narrow. Look at the Hardtalk programme where an aid expert counters much of what her book says. Yes- aid does not always work, but it is part of a wider package to address more structural problems.

  • she bad

  • ....and you represent the lowest form of intellect and comment youtube has to offer.

  • An inspiration to Africans. She is an example of the new generation, who have watched with embarressment their father's generation make a mess of the huge potential they were handed after independance. All strength to her - it will be native Africans like her, and not white Africans or foreigners that change the mindset.

  • Here's an interesting critiques of "dead Aid"

    zambian-economist*blogspot*com/2009/03/dead-aid-by-dambisa-moyo-review*html

    (Replace all the * with a dot . )

  • Go girl. We need people like you. Those who on this forum who still thinks we need Aid are lazy bums who are used to getting things for free, "baRwanda". We can not continue begging and living on foreign aid.

  • you're a lazy bum for not doing your research properly

  • Promote sustainability and innovation. So the people can make and grow their own economies, in turn will eventually have their country free of any foreign dependence. With that being said all Dambisa is pointing out the is problem. Building proper "wealth creation mechanisms" takes a lot more effort than to just give aid and thats why western countries taken the easy way out on this matter. All the produce in these countries should be finished goods (for export) so the PEOPLE retain the wealth.

  • At last somebody is speaking out.

    At last.

  • I totally disagree.Ethiopia is an example that proves her wrong.Corruption obviously exists there as anywhere else-that alone is another battle by itself. She needs to take a harder look at the development that the small nation has accomplished because of this same aid

  • If you live in Africa, then you will understand that Dambisa's ideology is not accurate. Stopping aid to Africa is not the best way, it will rather aggravate problems in the short run... maybe she argues that this will help Africans in the long run but its not the case because the leaders are too greedy to worry about helping its citizens... maybe its time to buy a guitar and join Bono...

  • u do realise that the leader are stealling from this aid and getting lazy too. Look at the rowandan president begging for the west to remember them in this hard time when the west is looking to save their ass as well from this perfect storm doesnt that show u that the aid model is only making our leaders weaker and more corrupt.

  • she's advocating a phasing out of aid. Truth is Africa cannot live on debt/aid forever so a long term strategy needs to be hatched in order to get off this welfare.

  • If you are going to sell a book, sell it based on merit. The bitter and unspeakable truthis that Africa and its political structures,is unworkable at the moment.Lame excuses about Aid are unfounded and only focus on bleedin obvious cases.

  • This is fantastic! About time someone was honest about Africa. I just saw her on Foreign Correspondent, on the ABC, Aust. I agree that the people should be 'doing for themselves' but if they don't have the resources how can they? I'm against sponsorship etc., as stated, you may educate a child but there is no social structure (businesses) for them to get a job in at the end. What can we do from the outside? Maybe our funds should be pooled into paying an accurate marksman for Mugabe??

  • I agree that pumping aid hasnt helped but its because its focussed at wrong projects. dont give people food continually look at proping industries which can produce that food.

Secondly it is well for me, in the comfort of the UK-even if I am African to sing dont throw in aid to Africa since i have 3 square meals while people really go hungry over there. Dambisa should go and live in Zambia- foregore her after dinner speeches - and then sing about no aid I would respect her more then.

  • I admire your honesty....it is easy for us to critic we are living relatively sheltered lives..

  • i disagree she is a zambian born girl and she has grown and choosen to make life better how can she help africa from the pits their in when she jumps in with them does that make any sense. the resources are being place in project in africa not by africans but by the people bringing it in thats the problem. What has the aid actually done shes not saying get rid of it completely becos theres no country that didnt use it to get started but at the moment the world ihas no plan 4 change in africa

  • i dont dispute she is Zambian born but she does not live in Zambia. The UK has different problems like that of obesity....which would make an African resident weep.

  • lol ur comment gives me jokes literally it funny i laughed but i dont get are u saying she should help with the uk

  • that is not the rational of the earlier comment..I am guessing you have not read the book then..please do..amazon has a copy

  • mwamba007 sorry im a bit confused are talking to me

  • Very good!

    T. West

  • this is so true i agree with her very much thats a great idea. An african solving problems for africa thats what we need.

  • Dambisa, you are my heroine! Africa's solution by an African.Africa for Africans, those at home and those abroad!

  • Well done Dambisa I watched your interview on "hard talk" hosted by Zena Bedawi, even though the host who is a pro of Meles due to her Eritrean alliance with him tried to divert your analysis you for sure came through addressing the issue as it is supposed to be.May Africa produce many like you.

  • Well done Dambisa, stop throwing money in state aid and give

books and condoms to the African.

Books to improve their education and condoms to avoid feeding 10 children for each family.

  • I am currently reading her book, and I am quite impressed with her delivery. It's great that as an African, and an African Woman at that, who has gone to the West for her Education and Career has decided to do something that will benefit Africa through what influence she can muster. If more diasporian Africans not only sent remittences but also went back and helped change their Countries for the better, Africa could improve rather than waiting for Wahalla or the West
