I know the original Naked Lunch book delt with Homosexuality, but at least in the movie I am unconvinced that that this version of Bill Lee is a homosexual. At least in the context of the movie there something more to be said about giving into inhibition; to kill your wife, to experiment sexually, to move away, to do drugs, to dig deeper, to live a fantasy as it is reality. IDK. Despite the TRYING of the movie to make feel as if it is a statement of homosexuality, I just don't get that vibe.
I always thought the movie was brilliant on three levels or three films in one. The homoerotic side, CIA infiltration of the drug trade and the third being a combination of the two. It's clear that the movie used the subject matter to convey a far more deeper side and one that could never be told openly. But maybe not and hence the genius of the film. To each there own.
the way he says "queer" the second time is so unearthing. you just feel his shame and dissociation with it matched with understanding. I love this movie and no it's not offensive to gay people just accurate in it's portrayal of a gay man who wished he was straight.
For me this is one of my favorites it's so fucked up and twisted it's a film not for everyone and by that I mean not for stupid people I hate when people are like oh my favorite movie is for example a dumb cop movie listen those ARE NOT GOOD FILMS and by that I mean plot's very easy to figure out god this movie is VERY underrated
I remember having similar feelings when I realized that I'm gay. Especially about transsexualism.
God! I love William S. Burroughs. What always makes me laugh is when people say, "Naked Lunch is offensive to gay people." It was written by a gay person, you moron!
oh my god. i only saw this movie once and i was on acid. i was convinced that in this scene, the color red started crawling across the white walls until in the end of the scene, the walls were completely red. i am blown away right now.
This is possibly one of the greatest scenes of the film. Weller does a great way of reading and speaking the routine, relishing the language and the pure joy of the sound. Despite being a little gross, it's beautifully done. Plus the 'you need a drink' line is wonderfully hilarious.

Steven Wright was around before this movie was released, but I definitely hear the similarity.

Peter Sellers in this scene gave Steven Wright his whole act.
