I think that emppu is really a very talented guitarrist, the problem is that tuomas is a very "selfish" music and songwritter in the way that he has a shitload of keyboard solos and very outstanding parts minimizing the role of drums and guitar a lot (not to mention the bass, wich is almost inexistent in nightwish)
and in adition emppu doesnt give a fuck about what you guys think.. he just makes great records with his band (and movie) , plays live and has a lot of fun on the road

I love it when he ends Wishmaster with different licks live. He did it with 'The Trooper' and 'Sanitarium'. So the man respects his elders, which makes me respect him even more.
If you want a guitar player whit speed, then try and hear "Gethesemane", or "Last of the wilds" :) Emppu can play hella fast ^^ i would like to see someone make a vid here on youtube, where they actulie can cover the guitar parts of "Last of the wilds" (the last solo).. I love his playing style :)
Empuu is NOT the best guitarist, or one of the best. Satriani, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Petrucci, David Gilmour, EVH, are the best. Even Isaac Delahaye is miles better. And before you give me the "speed isn't best" argument that all you people use to defend Empuu, listen to the people I gave you. THOSE guys make the guitar sing/cry/weep/shriek. And many of them have amazing technique to boot.

@galwish If you really wanted to show Emppu's playing skills,and there are few, you should have put here songs like : Wanderlust (played live rarely), The pharaoh sails to Orion, Elvenpath, Gethsemane ( I don't know if he ever played it live - too hard for him maybe) and one or two more. Emppu is not a great guitarist,his not even among the top 1000.

Dream Theater for example, there is still a base there as well. Most oftheir riffs are scales that they played with. Emppu uses scales a lot, especially in his solos. He just cuts them down or re shapes them. Oh and I never ment to throw s#!t to anyone else, I was just trying to make my point, as you were.
let me tell you, there is no difference in the notes that you can use is the way you use them, all music genre use the same secuence of notes and progresions, and you can`t re shape scales you can change a few notes but never re shape it, you can re shape the way of playing them using the technique of playing you are most confortable with, as i said before its easy to follow a melody and his solos are not the most impressive ones, if you think petrucci es good seek for stanley jordan

And I don't focus on guitar all the time, I'm better at bass than I am guitar. Watch stuff like YYZ from Rush and also listen to Vital Signs. I was brought up on them. This guy accomplished something harder than being fast. He developed a style of his own that is recognizable. When you hear his solos there's no posible mistake, you know it's Emppu. To find that personality playing the guitar is much better than being fast, and his playing is very likable, no boring at all
@sanchesduarte It will be a great fun watching Emppu doing a major sweep, with the length of his fingers it would be almost impossible. You are wrong, not ANYONE can learn to play technically demanding stuff that easily, some can never achieve the precision needed...but, you are also right, technique is not what's all about. I've never seen Emppu playing "with feeling", he somehow always looks like he's struggling with the guitar, and searching a place where he can put the guitar on his knee.

You hear Emppu, you KNOW it's Emppu, he's got such a really nice sweet melodic sound, really heavy and bawlzy but sweet and delicate when needed, freakin great tones and sound coming from his rig too. This Venue and concert in particular, Emppu (and the whole band) was on fire and produced their last smokin performance.

Demanding =/= Good. Just because someone is technically skilled does not make them a good player. A good player puts their soul into the playing, and you can FEEL that in the music. Based on that, Emppu is easily one of the best players.

Based on what you stated above one of the best players are Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vlatko Stefanovski etc. There's REALLY nothing in his playing, he tries to reach the speed but he fails, he tries to be emotional but he somehow always chooses the wrong note to connect the solo( live performance ), etc. He is nothing more but an average player in every sense.

But there are so many of them: Batio, Li, Darell, Skwigelf, Beck, Moore, Blackmoore, etc. There are so many good guitarists but who of them is a virtuoso is just too personal. For some it will be Slash, for some Batio or Malmsteen, for some Satriani or Vai....so you see the best thing to do and don't make a mistake is to state that they are all good guitarists. Or we can even state that they are all virtuosos, but I consider it a bit too much.
Emppu actually shreds during the early Nightwish works, but perhaps he wants to have his own style and being awesome without shredding at 4 billion notes per second. And he's got some nice riffs going on there.
@bybybeautifull well i like to play in his style and besides i actually could play better than him becuse i met him once before a show and i was fixing his guitar and he asked me something in finnish and i said i speak spanish, english, and french, so no finnish for me and so he asked me in english to play something for him so i played for him cliffs of dover and surfing with the alien and then he was all amazed and he asked me why im not a pro so he offered to jam with me and record a song

@cesarbarrios89 I do in fact, know something. I'm a musician myself. And I apologize, if I misunderstood you. But I disagree with how you think his stuff is too simple. Even if you listen to.. Dream Theater for example, there is still a base there as well. Most oftheir riffs are scales that they played with. Emppu uses scales a lot, especially in his solos. He just cuts them down or re shapes them. Oh and I never ment to throw s#!t to anyone else, I was just trying to make my point, as you were.

let me tell you, there is no difference in the notes that you can use is the way you use them, all music genre use the same secuence of notes and progresions, and you can`t re shape scales you can change a few notes but never re shape it, you can re shape the way of playing them using the technique of playing you are most confortable with, as i said before its easy to follow a melody and his solos are not the most impressive ones, if you think petrucci es good seek for stanley jordan

@cesarbarrios89 Yes... That's a good way to learn. And I have watched BB King before. He is good, but not entirely my style. And I don't focus on guitar all the time, I'm better at bass than I am guitar. Watch stuff like YYZ from Rush and also listen to Vital Signs. I was brought up on them. And have you listened to Iron Maiden? Their bass is amazing, but their guitar is ok too.

This guy accomplished something harder than being fast. He developed a style of his own that is recognizable. When you hear his solos there's no posible mistake, you know it's Emppu. To find that personality playing the guitar is much better than being fast, and his playing is very likable, no boring at all

Anyone could learn to play fast scales, arpeggios and modes, it takes practice. But it takes talent to play with feeling

@sanchesduarte It will be a great fun watching Emppu doing a major sweep, with the length of his fingers it would be almost impossible. You are wrong, not ANYONE can learn to play technically demanding stuff that easily, some can never achieve the precision needed...but, you are also right, technique is not what's all about. I've never seen Emppu playing "with feeling", he somehow always looks like he's struggling with the guitar, and searching a place where he can put the guitar on his knee.

@asterionmetal Very good comment, and I totally agree with that. You hear Emppu, you KNOW it's Emppu, he's got such a really nice sweet melodic sound, really heavy and bawlzy but sweet and delicate when needed, freakin great tones and sound coming from his rig too. This Venue and concert in particular, Emppu (and the whole band) was on fire and produced their last smokin performance.

@asterionmetal Emppu is not fast at all. That's the fact. He has a very short fingers and is thus limited in his playing. Not even one of the solos he plays live is very demanding. But it is the fact that he possesses his own style. Most of the time when he plays a solo live he puts the guitar on his knee, he is a very limited guitar player and nothing more than ordinary. You maybe like his playing,I like it to, but you are to subjective when referring to his skills of playing.

@TheDrapir You are right, I'm being subjective, but I never said he was a skilled guitarist, I tried to emphasyse in his feeling. But, even tough, I think he's kind of a middle guitar player when it comes to technique, not among the best but better than most rock band's guitarists.

Demanding =/= Good. Just because someone is technically skilled does not make them a good player. A good player puts their soul into the playing, and you can FEEL that in the music. Based on that, Emppu is easily one of the best players.

Based on what you stated above one of the best players are Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vlatko Stefanovski etc. There's REALLY nothing in his playing, he tries to reach the speed but he fails, he tries to be emotional but he somehow always chooses the wrong note to connect the solo( live performance ), etc. He is nothing more but an average player in every sense.

But there are so many of them: Batio, Li, Darell, Skwigelf, Beck, Moore, Blackmoore, etc. There are so many good guitarists but who of them is a virtuoso is just too personal. For some it will be Slash, for some Batio or Malmsteen, for some Satriani or Vai....so you see the best thing to do and don't make a mistake is to state that they are all good guitarists. Or we can even state that they are all virtuosos, but I consider it a bit too much.

Emppu actually shreds during the early Nightwish works, but perhaps he wants to have his own style and being awesome without shredding at 4 billion notes per second. And he's got some nice riffs going on there.
