While there are still instances of circus & other captive zoo abuses here in the West, in general it is nonsense to say American & Western European's various groups of zoo & other breeding programs handle elephants like Asians.
This is an Asian problem, from India, to Thailand, to Laos: they have elephants in Asia since before man, but the Asians have never learned to tame elephants --- using modern techniques --- other than chaining them for days or weeks & beating the crap out of them.

There was this female elephant in the zoo that was in heat. This little male mouse climbed up a ladder to her and started sweet talking her in big old ear. He charmed the hell out of, and she turned around and backed right up to him. He slipped it in, and just started screwing the hell out her, screwing harder than he had ever screwed. About that time, unknown to the mouse, she stepped on a nail and yelled "Ow! Ouch! Ow!" The mouse yelled back, " Thats right, Yeah, Take it all Bitch!"

This was not a tour bus, as I recall from the news, it was some sort of elephant cricket or so and the bus of one of the teams. Considering how elephants are treated all over south east asia, the reaction doesn't suprise me.
Oh and throwing stones ... if this world would be fair, the elephant would have stomped all these guys in the ground!

This is not normal behaviour for an elephant. Clearly the poor thing was not being treated well in some way. As fare as I know every incident of a domestic elephants loosing it has been found to be down to the humans around it.
