The Stones from 1968 to 1972 were at their creative peak, and it wasn't a stretch to call them the greatest rock band in the world...Beggar's Banquet. Let it Bleed. Sticky Fingers. Exile on Main Street! Has any band had a four album run like that? Zeppelin I to IV? Beatles Rubber Soul to the White Album?
God, I love the past. What a jam by the Stones. How could a groove sound any better than that. Absolutely Rockin' performance of this song. The "God Damn" shout out at the break still gets me every time. All hail R & R!
This recording of this great song is a perfect example of exactly why the Stones are so important to the history of popular music in the 20th Century. They brought a certain swagger and danger to rock and roll that Elvis and the Beatles never reached. Sure, Elvis shook his hips and parents gasped and the Beatles shook their heads and the parents smiled, but when Jagger sang "I'm going to smash down your stained glass windows and put my fist through your steel plated door," the parents trembled.
Mick Taylors lead guitar was perfect for the band, too bad he quit early on ,I think Keith Richards is the Best ever Rhythm Guitarist the rest of the Band awesome too.
In 69,the Stones were kids in their 20's.They were getting arrested a lot in London, declared pesonna non grata in Germany, something normally reserved for spies.Their management was begging them to calm down, and stop playing this song.Too violent. It was getting hard to get them in the US.So what do they do on the 69 tour of the US?They close every show with Midnight Rambler.Didn't give a fuck. They also recorded much of Exile on this tour in Mussel Shoals,Alabama.
Absolutely wrong. Where do you dorks come up with this stuff?! They closed the '69 shows with "Street Fightin' Man" and they recorded 2 songs- "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses"- in Muscle Shoals, for the STICKY FINGERS LP, not EXILE... You know, it's O.K. to not know this stuff, but why do these YouTube queers post these messages, in an attempt to "educate" somebody, when they have no f*****g idea what they're even talking about?!
When they come out of the break, right before they start to resume the tempo, Keith hits his strings so hard it sounds like he's playing an organ, not a guitar
Brian was amazing, but, without being too critical, was he as stunning as Taylor? Do any Ron Wood solos spring to mind, Hey Negrita? On the other hand Taylor's solos have trancended time itself
i'm amazed that anyone can critisize mick taylor, sure he was in the right place at the right time, but his playing elevated them to new heights, what influence has ronnie wood had [no disrespect to him ] none, he was just the right man at the right time, and if you ask any decent guitar player they would tell you that keith and ronnie are very average players, ive seen pub bands do stones songs better than they can [guitar playing wise].
Apex is right. They were in a dirty, relentlessly raunchy class of their own.Loud as hell.Saw them in '72 in the Montreal Forum. They were still closing with Midnight Rambler, and Keith's opening chords made the building shake.
They were wrecked. How they could play so good and so long that way is beyond me.Actually, they just seemed to get stronger. And they were writing their best songs at this time.
No, they didn't close with "Midnight Rambler" in Montreal, or anywhere else, in '72. They followed it with "Bye Bye Johnny" (then cut out "Rip This Joint," since people in the crowd were acting stupid, throwing bottles and lighting firecrackers, and The Stones wanted out), "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fightin' Man." Guess you were too stoned, or you're just too old now, Oleole.
@tonypap1 right on tonypap - it's no coincidence that the Stones best period was right around the time Taylor came on board and lasted until he left - Wood isn't fit to lick Taylor's boots - come to think of it, neither is Richards
Just my opinion: Yeah, Mick Taylor was great. Okay. However, KEITH RICHARDS was (still is!) the engine that power the world's greatest rock machine. Saw Keith live in concert in 1979. The New Barbarians. He stepped out of rhythm and into lead. Mick Taylor was smoother; however, Keef could out rock Taylor any time and every time. Got Keef's book. Love it! I've followed The Stones since 1964. Rock on! ... FoJ
Well.. I have to admit.. Mick T is genius, but what Keith is doing on this Midnight Rambler version from 69 is just so fantastic. Starting the song up.. goes straight to the heart.. and all through the song.. thank you Keith !
Jagger said that when Mick Taylor was with the group, it was at its all time best. Have to agree. Since M.T. left and Ronnie came in, a bit of a yawner.
pity mick t didnt stick around. ronnie, dependable, fitted in but jeez a bit obvious, in 'e? check out ac dc /stones rock me baby. the poor bugger is like a deer in headlights. HOWEVER. he was great with the faces
what can we say about the stones , the worlds greatest ever rock n roll band big part of my life remember my mum god bless her turning the tele over if they were on saying "you are not watching these good for nothings" 40+ years later and they are still there . when theyn call it a day cant wait for the film must be titled " its all over now" LOVE EM
That break to the boogie still kills me 40 years later. This record is a holy relic from the time when music WAS the internet, and we communicated back and forth across the Atlantic and around the world by means of Dylan, The Beatles and the Stones.....
@whitefeet1 Brother! I have read a lot of comments on youTube and posted a few myself; but you just hit the provervial Nail on it's Universal HEAD! Man! That is SOOO true! Everything was just more fun then. People were so much more connected. Thanks for a great observation. Wasn't it fun? I feel privelaged to have lived through it; in more was than one! I miss those days. I now own 3 copies of this album on vinyl cuz I wore out the first two! Never get tired of this. "Charlie's good tonight!"
Ya Ya's is the best live album ever by any band. The raw energy is incredible. Its like being in the middle of an electrical storm - ur a bit scared but lovin it all the same. It really seems to capture that whole late 60s dark vibe - when everyone realized that wearing flowers in your hair didn't suddenly make everything ok and the world was still a fucked up place.
Los stones rockeando a lo grande en el 69 y en México solo existía una incipiente cultura del rock. En esto también se demuestra nuestro sub-desarrollo
Too many times you hear that this period with Taylor was more cut and dried with rhythm and lead between Mick and Keith....beg to differ, with this as evidence
@robin14669 Do they have live footage? I always heard they ran out of film before the Stones preformed Midnight Rambler.. don't really know. Would be GREAT to see the live footage of this song that night.
@robin14669 Sadly, there is none. Maysles Bros only had a certain amount and Mick wanted most of it for the free concert which was supposed to be in Golden Gate but ended up at Altamont. Too bad. Would have been so great to see. The best live song EVER.
Hands down the best version I've heard out of about four. When Mick Taylor was with the group, they played better. Keith even sang good back up vocals for most songs. After this, he stopped singing his part for a while. Best live rock album I've ever heard. I would know, I can play every song on the album pretty fair and I know each person's part, for the most part. Thank u for all the great pics, too. Kicks ass. God bless everybody. Peace.
@cameltooth1 That goes double for me. audio and mix on this version is superb. one can hear how good their rhythm section was -- Charlie and Bill were pushing this one along like a freight train.
