Hate crimes are a blatant violation of the 1st amendment of the constitution. It is criminalizing a person for freedom of speech or freedom of thought. I think all liberals, libertarians, and conservatives should stand for constitutional rights and oppose hate crimes and should oppose creating favored classes of people.

@MyLoveAmerica Hate crimes are different because when you commit a crime against someone because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. you are not only hurting the person the crime is directed to, you are suggesting that you have violent intolerance for a larger group of people. This means that you are more likely to commit such a crime again in the future. Hate crimes signify hatred for large groups of people and a willingness to act on your prejudice. That's very serious.

Why do we need them? We don't. What's the difference between 1st Degree Murder and Involuntary Manslaughter? Motives and states-of-mind. Toomey is less conservative, at least on social issues, than Senator Santorum, so he has a good shot at winning and winning re-election, should he choose to run again. Toomey represented a Dem-leaning district in congress for multiple terms.
