The soundtrack by Philippe Sarde, the interpretation of Isabelle Adjani and Roman Polanski... everything in this movie is wonderful, like in a dream. The cinematic perfection.
@The40thThief I share your sentiments. But the 3 films you mentioned are together what's called the "Apartment Trilogy". The Tenant was the last film, so I don't think he'll make another film like this, at least in the near future.
Roman Polanski you have to start making movies like The Tenant, Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby again, I think that you are the best at that! The Tenant is the most unjustifiably underrated movie ever made
The author on which this film is based, Roland Topor, is also an actor who starred in Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu" (1978) and an artist who did the animation art in Rene Laloux's "La Planete Sauvage/Fantastic Planet" (1973).
my fave film,, mostly... its one that you can re watch a lot and get soothing new out of... i recon.. and its a lovely trip to Paris in the 70 with a stunning Isabelle Adjani ...GREAT soundtrack...wasn't easy to find.. of cheap...
Why is Polanski not hailed as a directorial genius when he is nothing less than one? 1971 Macbeth was, in my opinion, the superlative version. 1974 Chinatown is called by TCM as superlative Noir. Tess, one of the few examples of modern film having the guts to use classic literature for a story, is all but forgotten. So many directors are just BAD. Polanski is brilliant. And let's not forget the music!
He is a genius but also a degenerate, molesting underaged girls.. a gifted director but with little impulse control.. Both, an Woody Allen are degenerates, talented though.
@tojour That's why I always have mixed feelings whenever I actually see a movie of his that I enjoy. Because once there is the creation, then there is the creator behind it!
yeah i read that at his web site thats how i discovered this movie, i said to myself if bruce campbell likes it it must be good and creepy. I'm so glad i saw it to because it is incredible, it really messes with your head.
the overall musical theme is dreary and plodding, but it has a wonderful melancholy eerie note that repeats twice: this little musical variable or mini-melody (8 notes) hits on the 22 second mark, then again the lush eerie variable goes up a scale on the 49 second mark. 16 oddly chilling notes of eeriness and subtly disturbing, quietly suffering pathos.
pity that sarde didnt elaborate the theme more. the rest seems (maybe purposely?) muddled. anyway i've always been intrigued this "strange tale of a strange little man" musical note, it kind of piques your attention +makes you do a "who was that weird man" double-take; baffling. Mysterious.
I absolutely love the transformation of Simone to Trelkovsky in the opening titles at 54 seconds. Such a great movie

At the apartment when Trelkovski is dancing with Stella you can hear a background music.
Does anybody know the name of the composer or name of the song?
I think its marvellous piece...

Philippe Sarde I guess, it's a little variation of the main theme, but oddly enough, you can't find it on the soundtrack (it's indeed very good)

it sounds both tragic, pitiable and lonely, and strangely spine-shivering all at once.
