Depends at what period. Muslims ruled in Spain for nearly 800 years--there were periods of persecution against Jews and other non-Muslims as well as *relative* tolerance. Yes, and the Philistines were a European people who came from across the sea (likely Greece) and the name of the Philistines in Hebrew is Plishtim, which contains the Semitic root ""F-L-Sh", which means "INVADER". The Romans knew of the rivalry of their fellow European invaders, the Philistines, with the native Jews of this land. That's why they named the country "Palestina".

But please don't invent a mythologic "Palestinian people" with ancient roots. The local Arabs here very well may have lately developed a distinct Palestinian national identity, but this is a recent phenomenon. When Golda Meir made the assertion that historically speaking, there is no such thing as a "Palestinian People", she was correct.

Palestine was a European term--first used by the Romans for a general region but not for a specific state, nation or people. The locals, Jews and Arabs alike, never traditionally used the term "Palestine" or "Palestinian" to describe themselves or the land, unless they were speaking in a European language to Europeans.

My father was born here in Jerusalem in 1932--so his British-issued documents when he was a kid said he was a citizen of "Palestine"...but he was Jewish. Other relatives of my father were born here when it was Turkish-controlled, but they weren't called "Palestinian" at that time, because the country wasn't even called that then. The Arabs back in the 1940s usually didn't even use the word "Palestinian" for themselves, they usually just said "Arab". So Golda was right, and Galloway's a fool.

There is evidence of ancient Jewish states named both Yisrael (Israel) as well as Yehuda (Judah) in part of the same geographical territory where the present-day modern State of Israel exists. However, there has never been a sovereign independent state called "Palestine" or "Filastin".

False. There is ample proof of the "Malkhut Yisrael" (Kingdom of Israel) in the historical & archaeological records. It's quite debatable that the ancient Philistines who resided in the coastal plain were there before the ancestors of the Jews arrived-(in ancient times the Philistines were sea peoples whilst the Jews were hill people)--but even if they were there longer, the present-day Arabs who've recently adopted the name "Palestinian" have no link with the ancient Philistines.

Depends at what period. Muslims ruled in Spain for nearly 800 years--there were periods of persecution against Jews and other non-Muslims as well as *relative* tolerance. On the whole, if we are talking about the medeival/Early modern eras, Jews fared better under Muslim rule than under Christian rule, but it when and where, and they were still 2nd class citizens.

Meanwhile, Palestinians from the territories are allowed to work in Israel and receive similar pay and benefits to their Jewish counterparts. They are allowed to attend schools and universities. Palestinians have been given opportunities to run many of their own affairs. None of this was true for South African blacks.

There was never a "Palastinian" State. Before Israel the british controlled Israel. Gaza, was occupied from Egypt and the West bank from Jordan.
The origin of the word "Palastine" is from Greek, and it means "Occupied". Before they changed the name it was called "The Kingdom of Israel".
The poor "Palastinians" are just a tool, used by Iran and the other Dictatorships in the ME. Why would they do it? Please read "1984" by George Orwell.

What??? Prior to The British Mandate that took land from Palestinians and gave it to the Israelis, that land was referred to on maps as "Palestine." This is an undeniable fact. Look at historical maps. How dare you say there was never a land called Palestine. And your etymology of the word "Palestine" is completely bogus. It didn't come from Greek nor does it mean Occupied. It's from Biblical times and is derived from "Plesheth," meaning rolling/migratory.

Oh so I guess that as long as the people aren't recognized as a state by the West, its perfectly ok to take their land and hand it out to other people. I mean, that's what the West had been doing for ages in the Americas, Africa, Pacific and Southern Asia for centuries; why not do it to the Arabs as well.

Well, over 1,000,000 jews had to flee from the arab nations, including my family. Nobody gave me back my grandfather's land and house and money which he had to leave there.
Once I'll have my land back in Iraq and my wife's will get her land back in Greece, and all the others jews will get their lands from Europe and ME, we will gladly welcome the grandchilds of the palastinians who fled Israel 60 years ago.
