hey Simon. i like your tone. what kind of piano is that. BTW, Besides the playing which was good i thought your little annotations were hysterical. HAHA....Jazz?.....Alkan and art tatum are smiling down on you. lol
@brianCIM hah, thanks! the tone could probably be a bit softer though. the piano is a Bettich, an independent manufacturer in northern germany (bettich-piano dot de). Yes, didn't you know Alkan invented blue notes in the Barcarolle? ;) I'm glad you liked it =)
NOOOOO youve got the same thing that i have O.O ( ganglion on the right wrist )
it really holds me back from playing difficult pieces you know. i almost had the carpal tunnel syndrome. they removed it and after 2 monthes its back :S. so have to get a nother operation. :( ganglion isnt on the right place for me
@hjiuhfhrehui oh, so we share the same fate. but actually my ganglion doesn't impede me at all, i play the most acrobatic pieces i can find and manage, i guess your handicap comes from the joint problems only, though i just read that ganglions can cause CTS, dang! i have to get rid of it finally, mine is about 2 1/2 years old i think. oh gee!
@ReturnOfTheStienway thanks, glad you like it! i've seen you a lot on youtube, especially alkan videos ^^ i hope to start a new, major alkan piece soon =)
@OrangeSodaKing lol, are you reading my mind? i just printed the sheets today =) it's so beautiful.. there are some other works in my mind as well though, so let's see ^^
thanks! i really love the piece =) is your question in general? because i played this at home just for the recording, though i had some lessons with my teacher before. it just seems like he doesn't like Alkan or Medtner very much, sadly.. so iirc we didn't go into much depth with this.
Sorry, I just meant if your teacher had worked with you on this piece. But that's unfortunate that he doesn't care much for Alkan. I think people should go more by specific pieces than the actual composer (for example, many people only know of Islamey by Balakirev). And especially this beautiful piece! John Field (inventor of the nocturne) would have smiled ear to ear if he ever heard this.
Excellent! This is uncharacteristically slow for Alkan. Most of his pieces are loud, explosive, and blindingly fast. Do you play any other Alkan pieces? You should! I'm attempting to learn Allegro Barbaro now.
thanks! actually, most of Alkan's miniatures are quite soft and slow, some other easy pieces to consider are en songe, barcarolle op. 65, j'etais endormie or petit conte. i'm playing the first three parts of the allegro barbaro as a fun octave etude, although my hands are usually wasted after that ^^ but the pre-last part, which is seemingly even more difficult than the last part, is just over my level right now. i'm not sure what my next piece will be..
ClarkWise, listen through the etudes in the major keys Op. 35 as a set (I recommend Stephanie McCallum's recordings, with as of right now you can find on Youtube).
Most of the Op. 35 etudes are actually great for those not quite ready for Chopin's etudes.

@Sorcerer88 That is the Barcarolle from Op. 65... I will probably not post the Nocturne until it's in better shape.

Delighted to know that you have discovered Alkan. This is a lovely and very heartfelt performance...thank you!!

I noticed that I commented on this, but not about your playing!
Very beautiful! You poured your heart into this piece, and technically it is very comfortable. I can't wait to hear more from you. 5 stars.
P.S. Have you played this for your teacher?

I think I should learn La chanson de la folle au bord de la mer I love it !
And thanks for this nocturne !!

yeah the chanson is incredible, but i think everyone should know what its title means before hearing/play it, makes it a lot more interesting.
Sorcerer88 2 years ago
I speak french so I know what it means =P
And yeah the title makes sense when you listen to the piece !

Very nice rendition, I'm glad alkan wrote some playable music as well ^^

the chopin noc in f sharp minor (see my channel) has rhythm two notes against three almost whole beginning and end section
i agree that alkan is profound. pity his music is not that popular. ppl just dont have the ability to step that high and reach it

Do you have a ganglion cyst on the back of your hand?
Eohyr 2 years ago
yup, i do. i'm trying to get rid of it, but actually it doesn't hurt at all or impede the playing, so it's not too much of a bother.

excellent picture quality and not to mention the perfect execution of the piece. but you can do better with more dynamics. keep it up:D
dihang94 2 years ago
thanks, but it seems you missed some mistakes ;) and dynamics and phrasing are really hard for me.
Sorcerer88 2 years ago
A favorite of mine, you play it wonderfully! 2:33 is such an endearing melody.
KeithWhalen11 2 years ago
thanks! I too love this phrase, as although more subtle its reoccurence at 4:57 where the two themes are connected :)

excellent playing!
keep playing Alkan's other pieces :D
