Nina Simone was a true diva. She would lash out at the audience for not reacting as she felt they should and lambast the audience if she felt the crowd too small. I saw her twice, and both times she angered me. However, I bought everone of her albums, ans listento them still. She was a Force to be reckoned with. Julliard trained, civil rights singer, but could belt out the blues with the best of them. Her outfit reflected the times. It was the 60's, Man. You had to be there!

They where shocked about such a self confident women, and Nina did not give them a single smile. This audience is really the typical german crowd after world war 2, what is trying to be kind of international - but most of them are really scary - like my grand parents where.

She's an amazing performer, agreed, but she does look irritated here-- she is normally very relaxed and in control on stage, though also very serious. The more you watch this video the more it becomes obvious it's the pianist, who is off-time. You have to know her stage manner very well to pick up on it though, it's relatively subtle, clicking her fingers etc. Once she gets on the piano though and takes control, she starts enjoying herself more and playing the song like she wants.

The effects of her mental troubles (bipolar disorder) became more and more obvious when she travelled and lived in Europe where she was exiled.
Look at her in Montreux 1976, she is at the border of cracking on stage.

@JANXDPDX it's an omnidirectional microphone, they were common in the 60's for vocals.

Je redécouvre Nina Simone... Une grande artiste, très sensible. Une voix qui exprime une profondeur grave. Une très bonne musicienne et pianiste... Une vraie blues woman ... J'ai moins aimé les tubes commerciaux qui l'ont rendu célèbre. Elle aussi sans doute. I wish, de Billy Taylor, est l'une de ses plus belles reprises...

Besides the exellence of her show as "usual" with this great lady, and the cold audience has someone noticed the marvelous clothes she is wearing ? And how she is elegant with ! I know I might seem superficial but it is like a velvet box to hide a jewel, and jewel she was !!!!!!

Comparatively, she looks rather happy to be there. You should watch some of her other vids. I couldn't help thinking that that audience seemed to enjoy the performance, but they still don't "get" it.

She's a great performer. I don't know why you think she looks pissed...she doesn't. She just seems focused on her work is all. What is up with people thinking that black women are pissed unless they have a bright eyed smile on their face? Can we be normal and not offend, please?

She's an amazing performer, agreed, but she does look irritated here-- she is normally very relaxed and in control on stage, though also very serious. The more you watch this video the more it becomes obvious it's the pianist, who is off-time. You have to know her stage manner very well to pick up on it though, it's relatively subtle, clicking her fingers etc. Once she gets on the piano though and takes control, she starts enjoying herself more and playing the song like she wants.

He was off time n Nina was a master of time so I guess it just pissed her off lol cus she always demanded perfection. Watch some of her other videos sumtimes shell stop the performance and correct who ever is at fault and restart the performance! Love that bitch lol

It was called a chroch paint suit, they were the style back then. Some even came with chroch vest and skirts some were lined and some were not. Her's appeared to be lined....Peace
