wow genesis was a whole different band back then...right? i would be really interested, whether the friends of "old genesis" like the "new" stuff they did then ?
This is tremendous, but does this restoration not include some audio overdubs? I mean it sounds incredible, but some parts are almost too identical to the record (not showing Steve during most of his solo seems like a giveaway). It could easily be evidence of how great the band was that their live sound was the same as the record, and the band seems in sync with the audio, but is it really 100% live? If so, double wow.
@simonpeter6 Gabriel-era Genesis NEVER improvised anything. They played the song EXACTLY as it was written and recorded, every time. So yes, they got very, very good at it.
Imo, this, and The Lamb, constitute the highest level that the rock art form has ever seen. I'd love it if something new topped it, but realising that earlier Genesis were a product of their time, I'm content with this confluence of five rare talents retaining the title for at least a while...
I don't always like Peter's costumes...some of them freak me out a bit, but I respect him and his voice and the music they created so much that I've long since overlooked that initial dislike.
Wow...I am having a figurative flashback now from the first acid I dropped in '74 at the Agora in Columbus, Ohio, and watching Genesis perform this and Watcher of the Skies, etc.,
a religious experience of sorts for the non-religious. They don't write music like that anymore... sadly.
Thanks extreme from an old Genesis freak! Beautiful archival recording, made me feel young again to see and hear it. You are as young as your spirit tells you you are!!!! Love early Genesis...
This is sheer genius, and so relevant (to the world situation), with its biting attack on the "lies" of fulfillment through mindless materialism and consumerism.
Britannia is a symbol of Britain. It is normally a woman dipicted wearing a sort of ancient Greek type helmet, a tridant and a sheild with the British flag on it.
i listen genesis since i was 15th. i love this music so i love peter. his voice is so especial.i love so many wonderful bands until today and always but genesis reminds me the best of my life!! GENIAL PEDRO SOS LO MAS GRANDE . TU VOZ TU INTERPRETACION ME TRANSPORTA A LA EPOCA MAS DULCE DE MI VIDA.GRACIAS SIEMPRE!!!!
Steve Hackett is the true guitar innovater, he's doing tapping wayyy before Eddie Van Halen "invented it" and Sweep Picking before Yngwie started doing it to death; both these techniques done in one of his most incredible solos. No the most incredible solo of rock history
He looked pretty good as well. This is probably the only song from Genesis where the studio version sounds as good as the live version. Every other song I've heard from them, the live version sounds better. It's just me probably. Another costume that worked well for him.
@browner2252 You are wrong, Peter Gabriel was MUCH better that the commercial Phil Collins's Genesis, even if he stayed with the band so many years. Sorry. Peter was the best of genesis. he is a genius, Phil is not.
"I am in the English Channel, it is cold, exceedingly wet. I am the voice of Britain before the "Daily Express" (right-wing mass newspaper). My name is "Britannia"; this is my song called "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight".
"You are what you eat, eat well". I just ate a 3 course dinner and feel like I could take on the world, Peter Gabriel included. He better watch out. I still haven't watched this video to the end though - another forkful of curry and I should have the energy resonating from within. I'm scared it will, like the song, "burst my belt", but it'll be worth it to see this vid in full.
Why can't Arctic Monkeys do songs as genius as this? These are truly times bereft of bonafide song crafting talent. Also, "You are what you eat, eat well", it's so true. I just had a 3 course meal and I feel like I could take on the world. Peter Gabriel included. He better watch out, quite frankly. I still haven't managed to watch this video to the end though. Another forkful of curry should enable me with the courage.
I saw this and melted. My best friends brother picked up Selling England lp in Germany on a stint with this mans army. Brought it home and turned me on...to the record, too.

Thats his sport: not ruling out while taking AGES for evrything else besides what he´s not ruling out.
