Interesting story to this. "Misty Battlements"/"Death of a Knight". A Knight and a lover spend time on the battlements of a castle just before he goes off to war, knowing he might die during the battle. After the war he never comes back. She waits...waits
Mi sto gustando tutti i tuoi video dei genesis ed ex componenti...non posso che ripetere i miei primi commenti che ho lasciato negli altri video.... Sei un GRANDE!!
You must have liked Trespass. Wasn't really into the Knife, dull lyrics and poor electric, but the rest...wooah! I can't play anything on Trespass. I can't seem to get it at all.
Yes, I love Trespass. The Ant album has a reminiscent Trespass flavour in many places. I'm not sure if you're into The Geese but if you liked some songs like Stagnation, Visions of Angels or White Mountain you shouldn't have any reason to not love it as well.
Wow. Thanks. I'm not skillful enough to play this stuff, but it's nice to see what's going on across the fretboard. I've been listening to TG&TG for twenty years...
I taped this song off the radio in 1983 from a distant radio station when I was a sophmore in college and I found out it was Anthony Phillips. Now I know the title and that it is from the Geese album.
man i love ant's music so i like this very much..continue with this work...for example try god if i saw her now or wise after the event..it's amazing that in the world are fans of this great music as i am...wonderful job
Apart from anything else, how the heck do you manage to work out how to play these pieces just from hearing them? There're some 'funny' chords in a lot of these tunes. I stand in awe of your talent sir - you are an excellent player!!
Like many other things it's a matter of trying, continous practice (plus lot of listenings) and not giving up. As a result of all this you'd finally end up incorporating those 'funny' chords to your guitar lexicon. Thanks for your words gazzo45.
There is something about the whimsical style on Anthony phillips that moves me. He has mastered the 12 string like few others but it's really not about great chops. It's the beauty of his compositions that's his greatest strength.
Very nicely done! Some of my most loved music there. I'm gonna save you and try to copy what you're doing. Even if I can only get a couple measures right, I'll be thrilled! BTW, is it sandard tuning?
It really bothers me that nobody includes Ant or mentions him as being part of a Genesis reunion. I would like to see Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, Hackett, and Philips on a stage or in the studio recording new material together. I wonder what that would sound like this day and age?
Yeah! And as Mike plays guitars as well as bass, they could have a three guitar lineup on their studio work. A bit like a prog rock style version of the current Iron Maiden lineup, that has three guitarists. Or like Fleetwood Mac when Danny Kirwan first joined.
i've read interviews by Anthony Phillips, the Argentinian guitarists name is QueQuay (which Ant claims translates as Henry Watercress in English!), it's a real shame that people treat Steve Hackett like the best guitarist to come out of Genesis, it's hard to buy Ant's stuff now as well. The Hackett comment is wrong!
Hackett is THE guitarist for Genesis. I will admit, Phillips really shaped their early sound, but Hackett's tapping, nylon-string work, and harmonized solos were some of the most original guitar work to come out of the progressive era. That being said, I love Ant's work, solo and w/Genesis.
Yes, but Phillips is just as good a guitarist as Hackett was, he and Rutherford sort of brought the band onto the twelve string classic sound, and if Ant hadn't been in the band in the first place then Genesis probably wouldn't have advertised for a 'composing guitarist that plays twelve string' when the original guitarist left. Steve was the only person that applied to the ad, and joined the band when Mike was ill with flu, so Mike didn't really know what the guy was like at first.
Technically, I think Hackett has the edge, although Ant is very good in his own right. And the way I remember hearing it, Hackett placed an ad in Melody Maker looking for a band who were 'determined to strive beyond stagnant existing musical forms', or something like that. So Genesis actually replied to Hackett's ad, not the other way around.
I've heard that too, I think that it actually worked both ways. Things were looking desperate guitarist wise, because Tony had to take over on some concerts, and Mick Barnard (who was the transitional guitarist at the time) wasn't really what the band needed. But yes, I think they replied to his add, but i've heard that he had read their add (something from Armando Gallo's famous book).
Very good! I have copped the riffs from said album for years and especially like the number where Phill Collins is invited to add vocal track "Look, see how the world goes round" etc. Very beautiful and glad to know that others out there still appreciate good music but are there enough of us? And why can't I find similar guitarists in my local. Oh well! Right On!
You've got me hooked on Anthony Phillips. You make playing his music look like such a simple task.

That's great, so many amazing songs by him. If only they were that easy to play, he's got so much intimidating stuff even for the more experienced!

It's an extraordinary album but it's not Ant's pinnacle, IMO.

You're welcome, don't refuse to play this stuff, give it a try.
I'm listening to Ant's "Gypsy Suite" right now, if you like TG&TG you'd love this as well, it's like dying and going to heaven.

It would not sound as good as in the 70's. The magic of their music is gone. There would also be too much electronic in their music as well.

And although Hackett did create tapping, people still think of that as a Van Halen thing, even though it wasn't originally.
