@TheCullens590 well, they are omnivorous but you should stick to their lab blocks as their main diet and give small amount of veggies and fruits as a treat. Things like pasta, eggs, rice etc should also be just occasional treats (small amounts). If you google, there is a list of certain foods that should never be fed to rats (e.g. blue cheese, onions etc.)

Humans definitely take up millions of bacteria from somewhere and we are able to fight them off (usually). So I don't think that a rat taking a noodle off a plate is a big deal (I guess you agree with that). Pisces was a lovely girl and since she was deaf and blind, I wanted her to have something yummy. I took some close-up pictures and she had a red mustach :). So cute
I have also shared meals with my rat. He's very clean & cleanly & it's not like he's sitting in my dish. He sits to my side & he'll politely grab a crumb of something nearest the edge of the plate. He's a very good rat. ^_^

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't mind sharing a meal with my rats. My rat, affectionately named Miss Mouse, won't sit beside me like yours, though. She grabs a bite and runs back to her cage to eat it.
Reminds me of my mom's Paco (my sisters and I called him Pikachu)... now there was a fatty! But he was born the way he was and ate no more or less than his brothers. Plus, he was the smartest of them all.
OMG I MISS MY RATS! My first one got HUGE and always escaped the cage at night and jumped on my parents bed! ahahah!! like he could go anywhere and just always did that LOLOL and my most recent ones that passed away like 4 months ago were a blue rat and a hairless rat! I miss them! They are just so intelligent and really neat. I love it when you share food, if you touch them, they turn away like "this is mine!" lol. I am definately going to adopt more!
Pasta is good for them, it is one of the grain categories recommended for them, but yet again all foods should be moderated into small portions, you wouldn't want your rat to become a fatty :P
Despite what people say, Rats are very clean rodents and very smart too i have had lots of pet rats over the years my last one died of old age and 2 months before that it bit me and severd an achery in my right hand lol, but it dosnt discourage me from rats because they are so interresting to just watch, right no the only rodents i have is 2 pet degu's and a ferret which are cute little guys :)

its cute but not good in the long run. i think you should check up on a good diet. believe it or not they actually need to be fed specific foods. if they get too much glucose i think they get sick and die faster.

@CloudWatcherX If you look at some of my other posts I explained several times that their main diet is lab blocks with occasional fruit, veggies, and treats. This was the only time she had spaghetti. At this point she was deaf and blind (due to a stroke) so I wanted to treat her to something yummy. She died a few weeks later due to another stroke. I don't feed my rats cheese. I read as much as I could about proper rat care before I got my first rats. Thanks for your concern.

That's not very sanitary. I wouldn't let a rat (or any pet) near anything you intend to eat, much less eat it themselves from the same portion you're eating. In fact rat care manuals warn you not to do this.
Actually in Philadelphia its 350 dollars to have them spayed or neutered. Most vets that I have talked to say theu never have done it. We called 2 local vets and the SPCA and everyone we talked to thought we are crazy!
@sn0m0ns find a rescue or a rattery and ask who they use. The rat rescue I work with has a vet who will do it for $70. It is hard to find vets who are experienced with rats, but there are some out there.
Yes rats will eat anything but it doesn't mean you should feed them anything!!! That is sooo unhealthy for that poor rat. Yeah I bet he is loving that spagettii right now but pretty soon you won't be too happy to see your rat dead. Yeah they die eventually but just feeding him that will kill him even sooner dude.
@1Aspin I always fed my girls healthy food (lab blocks and the occasional veggies and fruits) and once in a while things like noodles or rice etc. This does not hurt them if fed in moderation, OK? If I feed treats, I stay away from sugary, salty and fatty food. Pisces, the rat in the video, is long gone and she did NOT die because I fed her spaghetti. Where did I ever mention that I only feed my rats human food??? This is what you assumed for whatever reason but not the truth.
I have had rats for about 2 years now and I love them to death.. were on about the 10th litter but got rid of all the females because at one point we had like 25 rats! I gave them to friends and family who I know wouldnt use them as feeders.

@livexflirtxlovex What kind of breeder is that?? Sounds like a backyard breeder to me. Is the breeder going to take the babies back at least? How many babies did your rattie have? Oh, that's why you were asking. You assumed that I only keep one rat because of this video. Don't worry, I always knew about the importance of keeping at least two :). I always had between 2 - 4 at a time. I also foster for a rescue.
i gave my rats alot of people food along with their regular food as well as a little ice cream and my rats lived on averaged of 4-6 years my oldest one was a girl named saki she lived to be 71/2 years old. call me crazy but i think its better for them not to eat completely healthy all the time =)
I eat like that with my girls... This might sound gross but me and my mom have this trick where we put food in our mouth and they will pry our mouths open to get the food, there so cute :D

That's not very sanitary. I wouldn't let a rat (or any pet) near anything you intend to eat, much less eat it themselves from the same portion you're eating. In fact rat care manuals warn you not to do this.

Actually in Philadelphia its 350 dollars to have them spayed or neutered. Most vets that I have talked to say theu never have done it. We called 2 local vets and the SPCA and everyone we talked to thought we are crazy!

@sn0m0ns find a rescue or a rattery and ask who they use. The rat rescue I work with has a vet who will do it for $70. It is hard to find vets who are experienced with rats, but there are some out there.

Yes rats will eat anything but it doesn't mean you should feed them anything!!! That is sooo unhealthy for that poor rat. Yeah I bet he is loving that spagettii right now but pretty soon you won't be too happy to see your rat dead. Yeah they die eventually but just feeding him that will kill him even sooner dude.

@1Aspin I always fed my girls healthy food (lab blocks and the occasional veggies and fruits) and once in a while things like noodles or rice etc. This does not hurt them if fed in moderation, OK? If I feed treats, I stay away from sugary, salty and fatty food. Pisces, the rat in the video, is long gone and she did NOT die because I fed her spaghetti. Where did I ever mention that I only feed my rats human food??? This is what you assumed for whatever reason but not the truth.

I have had rats for about 2 years now and I love them to death.. were on about the 10th litter but got rid of all the females because at one point we had like 25 rats! I gave them to friends and family who I know wouldnt use them as feeders.

@sn0m0ns You love your rats but then you let them breed and breed? Hmmmm, interesting. Do you even know how many rats there are that are in need of a good home? So there is no need to breed. I hope you'll stop. It's not that hard to separate males from females or get them spayed/neutered.

aw i bought a rat who was 3 months old alone. she was $20!! and a few days ago she gave birth. one of the babies got eaten from the mom probably was dead or something because they dont eat them for no reason. love rats. did u watch the video about y its important to have atleast 2. the topic is 2 rat. why its important to have 2. or something like that and the first video is the one u should watch.

@livexflirtxlovex What kind of breeder is that?? Sounds like a backyard breeder to me. Is the breeder going to take the babies back at least? How many babies did your rattie have? Oh, that's why you were asking. You assumed that I only keep one rat because of this video. Don't worry, I always knew about the importance of keeping at least two :). I always had between 2 - 4 at a time. I also foster for a rescue.

i gave my rats alot of people food along with their regular food as well as a little ice cream and my rats lived on averaged of 4-6 years my oldest one was a girl named saki she lived to be 71/2 years old. call me crazy but i think its better for them not to eat completely healthy all the time =)

I eat like that with my girls... This might sound gross but me and my mom have this trick where we put food in our mouth and they will pry our mouths open to get the food, there so cute :D

@MsGymnast4life What a cute girl! You should have gotten two, though, because rats are very social and do a lot better in at least pairs (same sex of course unless spayed or neutered). Please do a lot of research at least now (you should have done that before you got your rat).
