Right after "The Doria Project" dive, I spoke with Peter Gimbel about the condition of the Andrea Doria on the bottom. He said the entire inside of the ship had collapsed and shifted to the lower side. Asked if the boilers were intact and in place, he said yes. Finally, I asked about the bow, was it OK or had it become bent or crumpled by hitting the bottom during the sinking? Surprised he said "How did you know? I never told anyone." I replied, as a naval architect I deduced that it might had.
@0x7BB Attended a private screening of Gimbel's film. It was in the Museum of Natural History in NYC in a large room and a few hundred people from around the USA. At the end Gimbel came on stage and took a few questions then went behind the curtain. As everyone was leaving I ran down an aisle and backstage. It was a rare chance I just had to try for. Gimbel was tall friendly in a blue blazer, tan pants and distinguished looking. I once almost dove the Doria, just had to meet someone who had.
Can help admiring those divers diving with that, now old ,tchnology..

@henrynevins Very cool. Would have loved to have a chat with Peter Gimbel about the Andrea Doria, unfortunately he passed away in 1987.

what a shame....a great ship just like the titanic gone to waste...to those who died in both ships rest in peace

They should've raised that cunt of a ship before it rusted into nothing!

I dont think that was narcosis... at 50 feet? I think he just panicked.

No, it was Oxygen Toxicity -- he was on pure O2 and had convulsions.
These days you don't do pure O2 below 20ft.

Case223445 3 years ago
Yes, they recovered and opened one of the safes. It only contained deteriorated travelers checks, dollars and liras.

I remember watching parts of this as a kid. I have had recurring dreams about deep mixed gas diving since then.

WTF were they thinking having them breathe pure o2 at 50 feet? This must be old. We've learned since then.

It's from sometime in the 70's, so yeah, it's old.
