I remember this past summer I rode my bike about a mile up the road at about 7 or 8 to see the full moon. I sang this song as I rode up there, and when I got to the top of the hill where there was a huge field on either side of the road, I found myself singing, "And the moon rose over an open field." over and over.
@DannyDownNdirty Then you're ready to read W.B. Yeats and Shakespeare's sonnets. People who like Simon & Garfunkel are incipient lovers of literature. Expand your experience - you're there!
@killingamps Have you read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and "Blue Highways". You certainly have your own story to tell. So tell it. What was the sky like over Kansas, the trees in _____ now you start from there.
In the mid 60s, as America and American youth was in such an upheaval, and as disillusion with our life as American citizens took hold of our ability to see a future for our life that could really "ring true," many thousands of kids just left their homes in "search of America" (Easy Rider) and to hopefully find themselves; to make sense of what all around them that made no sense...
This amazing and haunting song personifies it all for me; the "tone" of the words speaking of our mutual search...
@1955annemarie I really wish I could go back in time, I'm 15 and this is the only kind of music for me nothing in the charts today even compares to this music
@razzyboy246 Well, Razzyboy, it took me a long time to realize that you ARE who you are, & "time" doesn't have a thing to do with it; no matter how old you are, once you are age 14, you're "complete," & what you like, & can appreciate, is pretty set. You must not be a "follower," but, instead, a "thinker," & that means that you want more than just "what is popular"; perhaps you like the music of the 1960s because it was "raw," & really SAID something; it was true ART, not computerized "noise."
hmmmm ive listened to the yes version over and over for a while then heard this. I guess im too attached to yes's style and not so much S&G but still a nice song
Very Beatlesque with the McCartney like bass lines, and the Ringo-like drum fills. I love this song, and think that Simon had a pretty good grasp on America in 1968.
Wouldn't it be great if youtube deleted every post with the f-word in it? That way we are spared the dubious wit of folks who have only half of theirs. I feel the same could apply to every pimply-faced dennis-the-menace that liked to sprinkle the epithet "fag" in every posting.
@masterinthemask62 There's plenty more where this has come from. Great literature is how people transcend the limitations of space and time. It's in art that you find all people are really one, with variations on a theme. Practice a little discipline, read Shakespeare and the mysteries of life will unfold as you never expected.
This was popular in the summer of '65 when I met my wife. I would hear this about the same time I took her to work. We were young but not free. We were poor but so was everyone else around here. I did get to go to RVN. I'm glad I came back but I didn't know that I had been poisoned by Agent Orange or some other defoliant. There were 12 major ones used. My brother-in-law came back poisoned too. It has destroyed our heatth.

The part that goes : counting the cars on the new jersey turnpike sends shivers down my spine. It's a lyric that contains so much meaning. I love these guys though they are a relatively new discovery to me. Thought they were brits ... new yokas turns out. I love em even more for it I think... these boys got me a little veklempt on this friday morning.
I've been looking for this song for weeks and weeks. I heard it on Almost Famous and had to know what it was called. Almost Famous is one of my favorite movies...it's one of those movies you don't think much about until you realize it completely life-changing....
I wish I grew up in this time. The music was so rich and amazing back then. They did it for the sheer joy of making music and making a difference in the world, rather than letting money corrupt their every move. I hope one day I can be half the performers they are. :)
i think this is one of their top10 songs Its funny how YES cover of this song solidified my appreciation more. And frankly, I'm sometimes not sure whose version i like more. i'm a traveling man myself alway's out on the road going to some new exciting place and this here is one song i alway's play when i'm leaving another city or town this truly is a great traveling song
@guidenredhawk Wow. I can't believe i posted that. I must of been in one of my defensive Yes moods, hahah. Sorry, i didn't quite mean that. I do think it is better though. But thats my opinion...
Reminds me of the movie Almost Famous, when the older daughter gave her brother all her albums. Then she went to look for America! A great, true movie. Cameron Crowe was only 15 & wrote for Rolling Stone magazine. It was the story of his life. A great song & movie! A must see for anyone into the concert scene of the early 70's. I got to see alot of great concerts in the 70's. Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Paul McCartney, just to name a few. Great decade for music, except disco!
@clolom95 The problem I had with disco was the long skirts! The three piece white suits! Not to mention polyester leisure suits! One day we were wearing hip hugger bell bottoms, hot pants & mini skirts. Then you couldn't buy them anywhere! It was all mid length (midi) dresses or (maxi) dresses that went down to the floor! What about Disco Duck? The Bee Gees were the only good group, but that is only my opinion. You're entitled to yours. If you can name any other good disco groups, let me know.
@keaster55 Abba where quit nice, wheren't they? They did some pretty nice songs, and though I'm not a big fan of pop or disco, I do like "SOS" and you know.."Dancing Queen", "Mamma Mia" and "Does Your Mother Know?"..
@pyschedelicpatti OK, I'll give you Earth, Wind and Fire! There was a song from the 80's or late 70's, not sure, that I liked. Something called Cosmic something or another, I wish I could remember the name to that song!
@keaster55 It's always iffy responding to year old comments, but...I believe the song you are referring to is "Fantasy" from All 'N All (1977). I am priveleged to know Maurice White's ex-wife, and also his nephew...The song was partly inspired by the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and coincidentally, I also knew Dr. J. Alllen Hynek pretty well, the man whose work inspired "Close Encounters."
@keaster55 Great post, Keaster55!! Sounds like you're my age, and were there in the middle of history, too!! Thanks so much for the valuable information, and for that little "window" into our awesome past...what a shame we cannot take the youth of today back in time on a "Magical Mystery Tour" to share it all with them!!!
@1955annemarie Ah, you also sound like a Beatles fan! Got to see them in concert in '66, when I was 11. First saw them on Ed Sullivan when I was almost 9. Fell in love immediately with those adorable moptops. Mom went out the next day and bought us the first album released in the US, Meet the Beatles. We twisted our guts out until it hurt so bad! Yea, the love and peace at that time was GREAT!
there was no better time for music, and for some reason disco was considered to be acceptable. but what is still cherished today? that good old honest rock.
@squidster29yay You are so right! The kids of today are beginning to appreciate the great music of the 60's and early 70's. I really hated disco music! Someone said it was great and I asked him to give examples.I said the Bee Gees, but their earlier work in the 60's was much better! I said OK to Earth, Wind and Fire. But honestly, that's about it! And they said rock and roll was just a phase! Rock and roll is here to stay! Even though the music of today is so bland and pop. Hate it!
robson1144, Thanks for your reply my friend. Dont know where you come from, so cant at this time help you with the festival request. I live in England in the East end of London, but escape the city at every opportunity. Do you drive? get some friends and take your music to some nice place and start your own mini festival, Oh, and dont forget the Afghani. If you live in England then I am sure I could point you in the right direction regarding 'good' festivals. Bye Mate.
Try to get away from the constraints of modern life, do what you want without hurting others. Soon similar minded people will pick up on your free attitude and before long you will be free of all the crap that the rest of society endure. Most people are afraid of change, they will stay 'tied' all their lives. Go for it my friend, you only live once, why waste it? I'm 61 yrs young, and I still want to see whats over the next hill. I'm not a dreamer, just a normal guy being realistic. Good Luck.
Badbull, The 60s was a great time, we were'nt constrained by the pressures placed upon the young of today. For a start, we did'nt have skunk to smoke, in my view, the worst 'blow' ever. We smoked good thought provoking weed that allowed us to follow through with our dreams. Skunk takes that away. If you smoke, try some real 'original', and find your space. There are many festivals to go to that have that good vibe, many kept quiet because the people who go to them ,dont want them spoilt by idiots.
luvmedogjosie= you re livin the dream my friend...... i love your outlook .... i personally dislike skunk but am fortunate to have in my possession a lump of afghani black ............ seems to do the trick as far as thought provoking dreams are concerned . Im 45 yrs free-spirit and looking for some good festivals for this coming summer...............please msg me for any pointers
Everytime i hear this song I think of Captain America from Easy Rider. This makes me want to find freedom. Yes, I live in America, but what is the American Dream? Hunter S Thompson had an idea and so did Leary. And many others. Whatever the case, its a good song. May we all find our American Dreams.
@corncornrocks yeah its all "get a saying" like" let me love you" and repeat it over and over again to a remixed backing track. the banality of todays music is so obvious, it mirrors todays" give it to me" now society! At least we have this beautiful meaningful poetic music of paul simon
@corncornrocks You and me both. The triteness and shallowness of the pop/rap and, for the most part, rock culture and message is sickening. Keep listening to real music that actually has a meaning and is simply beautiful, if for no other reason than to keep it alive.
My friend, You dont have to have long hair, or to have lived in that MAGICAL time, to be a Hippie. Being a hippy is a state of mind. I was fortunate enough to have been a teenager then, but like most youngsters of the time, never really appreciated what was going on, just took it all for granted. I am fed up talking to people about the 60s, because they look at me as some kind of delusional freak, who only imagined such a good time could have existed. Looking back, it did happen, it was great.
@luvmedogjosie Right on dude. I wish I could've grown up in the late 60s/early 70s around the time of the counterculure. You're one lucky person, I would always want to talk about that time. Stay free man.
I listen to this song with such deep longing and nostalgia for an age which I never had the opportunity of living in. I may be a young man, and my hair may look short, but I swear I am a hippie. Peace and Love for all who still believe. :)
a very good reply, sire...i'd certainly had a few glasses of good shiraz in merry olde england when i posted that...but i think i was generally correct (sadly)...best ever wishes....
paul simon's america has gone...maybe it never existed, anyway (outside the ivy league)...these days, all he and artie would find are redneck psychopathic homophobic evangelists...who would regard simon and garfunkel as jewish faggots....
It did exist. The world has gotten way too serious. The other half of the Baby Boomer Generation saw to that. I have no idea why they would call themselves Progressives. They are anything but.

1955annemarie 1 year ago
@1955annemarie Ah, you also sound like a Beatles fan! Got to see them in concert in '66, when I was 11. First saw them on Ed Sullivan when I was almost 9. Fell in love immediately with those adorable moptops. Mom went out the next day and bought us the first album released in the US, Meet the Beatles. We twisted our guts out until it hurt so bad! Yea, the love and peace at that time was GREAT!

@keaster55 i just watched that today :)
there was no better time for music, and for some reason disco was considered to be acceptable. but what is still cherished today? that good old honest rock.
squidster29yay 1 year ago

Good Luck.
luvmedogjosie 2 years ago
Badbull, The 60s was a great time, we were'nt constrained by the pressures placed upon the young of today. For a start, we did'nt have skunk to smoke, in my view, the worst 'blow' ever. We smoked good thought provoking weed that allowed us to follow through with our dreams. Skunk takes that away. If you smoke, try some real 'original', and find your space. There are many festivals to go to that have that good vibe, many kept quiet because the people who go to them ,dont want them spoilt by idiots.
luvmedogjosie 2 years ago
luvmedogjosie= you re livin the dream my friend...... i love your outlook .... i personally dislike skunk but am fortunate to have in my possession a lump of afghani black ............ seems to do the trick as far as thought provoking dreams are concerned .

At least we have this beautiful meaningful poetic music of paul simon
imnotthemessiah 1 year ago
@corncornrocks You and me both. The triteness and shallowness of the pop/rap and, for the most part, rock culture and message is sickening. Keep listening to real music that actually has a meaning and is simply beautiful, if for no other reason than to keep it alive.

ash3rbueno 1 year ago
did i say that? when i said it, i didn't mean I meant i wish i grew up in the 60's or 70's. I meant i wish peoples' taste in music was better.

Looking back, it did happen, it was great.
luvmedogjosie 2 years ago 4
@luvmedogjosie Right on dude. I wish I could've grown up in the late 60s/early 70s around the time of the counterculure. You're one lucky person, I would always want to talk about that time. Stay free man.
Badbull 2 years ago
I listen to this song with such deep longing and nostalgia for an age which I never had the opportunity of living in. I may be a young man, and my hair may look short, but I swear I am a hippie. Peace and Love for all who still believe. :)

paul simon's america has gone...maybe it never existed, anyway (outside the ivy league)...these days, all he and artie would find are redneck psychopathic homophobic evangelists...who would regard simon and garfunkel as jewish faggots....

It did exist. The world has gotten way too serious. The other half of the Baby Boomer Generation saw to that. I have no idea why they would call themselves Progressives. They are anything but.
