  • Our Government should work to restore the S.S. United States to it's former glory.

  • my grandpa worked on this ship

  • Have they goot any farther in saving the SS United States.

  • I would love to have a copy of this recored. Is this record still avalable?

  • @danielmkubacki I don't think it was ever released as a record. The copy I have is a 78rpm studio demo with a typewritten label!

  • @jsfmt99 Interesting thing about "Munster, Go Home" is that the shots of the ship are the same as the views seen in "Bon Voyage." The same footage shows up in vintage United States Lines films which leads me to believe it was all stock footage!

  • What song is playing at the beggining of the video before the reall one? I like it...

  • @TheYarxia That's "You Are Beautiful" from "Flower Drum Song" performed by the SS United States Orchestra (a Meyer Davis Orchestra) under the baton of Alfred Menconi. Hope this helps!

  • What happene to her lifeboats and davits? Were they auctioned or just cut off for some other odd reason?

  • @wtb6chiny The lifeboats and davits disappeared while she was overseas for asbestos removal.

  • I have contacted the White House with a long message, I hope they get involved to save this ship!

  • Hey you should get a record cutter and cut a few more copies of the record! I don't have one but they aren't that difficult to come by. Just make sure to get one that has been restored. I have some record blanks though!

  • Very well put together, and as always, great footage. I'm really into gettting this lady back into the sea-going spirit...it was what she was made for after all. She's a nations pride. Let's keep it that way.

  • Modernism was the chic & glamorous "look of the future" in the Fifties. It was part of the look & feel of the ship, and was probably considered an extension of the ship's clean exterior lines. Passengers would have looked upon an Art Deco interior as old-fashioned by this time.

  • Fast but ugly and uninspiring. Style-less , cold and utilitarian. UGHH!

  • Wow, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but this seems a bit troll-like. Fast and gorgeous, she inspired an entire generation of Americans and was a symbol of national pride. Everything about her, stem to stern, was cutting edge modern. She remains the greatest maritime achievement of the 20th century.

  • I should have been more specific. Apply all I said to her interiors. Her profile is really quite beautiful. sorry

  • So we'll just have to agree to disagree!

  • Question, how rare are copies of that record?

  • I'm not sure, but as far as I can tell, the copy I own is a studio demo. I don't know if other copies were made during the same session. Hope this helps. Why do you ask?

  • Love the ship, love the song, and a I got a record player. What more reason do I need to get a copy?

I'll cheek e-bay, probably a copy there, and thanks for the help.

  • GREAT FOOTAGE THANKS!

with all the growth in cruising why can't one of the American lines get her out of mothballs and restore her. i'm sure there will be a huge number of people who would cruise in retro style !!

  • Anyone know where i could get the lyrics for this song? I suppose i could just write down what I hear but that seems rather tedious.

  • You want a sea going vessel, I give you Noah's Ark. Titanic, built by professionals sunk on it's maiden voyage. Noah's Ark, built by amatuers...saved the world. Moral of this story....never hire a professional.

  • And yet, the SS United States, built by the ultimate professional, William Francis Gibbs, is still afloat!

  • And nothing done to her secene 1962, why don't we get her under steam again? She is still the fastest ship in the world, and Americas flag ship, come on people lets save her!

  • Suggestion: Deprive the Bush clan of all their ill gotten gains and pour that (considerable) wealth into a US government initiative to restore this beautiful ship to become a world ambassador for your (once and I'm sure again) great country, in a bid to reverse the damage caused by that uncurious moral dullard whom a slight majority of you elected (twice!) as president of your noble nation). Go on, you know you can! Viva la SS United States! Please live again (all 40 plus knots of you!)

  • yeah!!!

  • people said the SS united states and America are sister ship, why the united states funnel bigger than the america?

  • i can't believe it...... there was once a time where these people cared for the passengers.... now on cruise ships the rooms are smaller and it just wasn't as great as these queens of the sea god i'd give almost anything to go on a ocean liner

  • on which cruise line have you been on that you were so disappointed? I'm working for Celebrity and most of our guests are very happy and I care about my guests every day...

  • THIS is an American tragedy! With today's technology and the big "U"'s powerful engines and undersides that were decades ahead of her launch, this would be a sweet ride!

Seeing her rust like that makes me weep - and that's what the S.S.U.S. is doing. She's crying out "help me - set me free!"

  • Did that ship have a sister named the American Star that got wrecked in the canerry Islands and was there until it gave into the Elements of nature and collasped into the sea ? I looks just like the American star

  • The AMERICA (as it was known as US's sister ship) was almost like an exact mini replica of the UNITED STATES. I think she was built before her, which gave them great insperation for the design of the Lady in Waiting.

  • There were a lot of ships that should have been saved like the olypic the sister ship to the titanic it was an almost exact repleca of the titanic instead they scrapped that beutiful ship , i hope this one is saved it is a ship that was american built we can make things good too ,ok there are ships that are decarated better but when this ship was built they were doing that modern look for there time i admit it is a little plain in some rooms but it has its own charm.

  • Is that the best vinyl recording You could locate ? - If it's the only one, consider finding a person who has the sound tools on a PC to elliminate the Pops & Clicks for You from the recording which show up as spikes on the waveform analysis of the recording.

  • How much money are you asking for? I'll donate money if you ask me! The United State's interior is mostly made of non-flamable materials.

  • My family sailed on her in 1968. I was 8 years old. It was one of the grandest experiences of my life. My Dad teared up as we saw the Statue of Liberty. Good memories.

  • I saw this grand ship twice in my life. Once at the end of her service docked on The West Side of Manhattan many years ago and and then about a year or so ago in Philadelphia. Even after being dragged all around the world and having her interior dismantled. She still looks quite grand. I really hope that she is restored and can one day take to the sea again one day.

  • Isn't she docked in Philadelpia?

  • no thats queen mary, The SS United States is rotting away on a beach in lanzarote

  • Hi...actually the Queen Mary has been permanently docked in Long Beach, CA as a floating hotel/tourist attraction since 1967; the United States IS docked in Philly, and is, sadly, rotting away. You're thinking of its smaller sister ship the SS America which was being towed to the other side of the world and broke loose, beached itself, and is now rotting away on the beach.

  • All of the SS America is now underwater! there's a slideshow in Youtube showing its descent into the sea over the years.

  • No it's not; it's rotting in Philly across from the IKEA. You can't miss it on Google Earth.

  • Hi FuzzBob, 007inMiami is referring to the SS America, not the SS United States. The America has, sadly, given in to the elements while the mighty SS United States remains in Philadelphia...

  • You're absolutely right. My mistake.

  • oh wait, sorry im thinking of her sister ship.

  • I personally think the Queen Mary is ugly, the SS Normandie was the most beautiful ship ever built and the SS United States the fastest ever built and they both beat out the Queen Mary which looked old fashion during it's time and is simple and boring like all other British things.

  • Woah. A bit harsh.

  • British ships are far,far better that american ones.

  • I'm curious to know your criteria for "better." The SS United States is arguably the greatest maritime achievement of the 20th century.

  • The Best

  • Do you have a point or are you just an ass?

The SSUS still holds the Blue Riband so when it comes to speed the British ship lags. But who cares? The golden age of liners is dear to some of us without it being some kind of competition. My favorite is the Normandie. A fabulous French ship.

  • Last I checked Cunard was owned by an american company. So ummm...

  • yes, but Cunard ships are built in southampton by a french engineering company, so...........

  • horay for 3 countires owning somthing

  • No, not built in Southampton, but Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Saint-Nazaire, France or Fincantieri (Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A.), Trieste, Italy. We don't have to build anything in Britain any more, because our economy of nothingness is so fantastically successful - just watch us ride out the coming recession and laugh at all those idiotic countries with strong manufacturing bases, what were they thinking?

  • wairangi, the Queens may have been more beautiful..but Big-U was definately faster. Personally, I think the Queen Elizabeth was more beautiful then QM. But out of all of the liners, the SS Normandie was by far the most beautiful.

Still..it is so sad to see Big-U rotting away in Philly. She will probably end up like other liners which were never fully utilized. Just like Michelangelo/Raffaello, Normandie, and other liners which were wasted.

  • Never listened to such argent rubbish, certainly not the Fisrt Lady of the Sea. Interesting that you there in the United States found a place for the real First Lady of the Sea, RMS Queen Mary but have neglected your own, says something!!

  • Sorry, wairangi, but even the captain of your Queen acknowledged that our girls are faster than yours!

  • i doubt anyone could restore her...shes lying beached on the canary islands rusting away...well half of her the other half rolled over into the sea when she cracked in half

  • Actually, orlandoboi, you're thinking of the America, the SSUS's older "sister" ship. The SSUS is currently moored in Philadelphia, owned by NCL, fortunately still with us.

  • Hell if i had a couple billion dollars lying around I would buy her and restore her to what she was and then run her as a trans-atlantic or cruise liner

  • unfortunately the cruise trends seem to be to get on the biggest ships possible. relatively speaking this is not that massive. i am amazed it was not bought and restored to be used as a luxury cruise ship.

  • Nice reminder we used to build things in America and people used to get behind such projects. Something should be done to preserve her but I am doubtful anyone is willing to put up enough money.

  • NCL will never restore her. They just bought the ship for political reasons. And now they have monopoly on the Hawaiian cruise market, doing inter-island cruising.

  • Very, very sad to see her still sitting there, when she should be out at sea. Carrying passengers, what NCL is doing....is a slap in the face to this ship. I love the video and more people ought to pay attention on how to save it.

  • why

  • ill never salute the United States :)

  • Pure cheese
