Joe, aspiring guitarist here, just getting into fingerstyle. Being 19 myself, you really are an inspiration. Can you give me any advice on getting into fingerstyle?
Had the pleasure of meeting Joe and his mum in San Diego back in 2006 (at a Tommy show). Simply incredible talent and a nice guy too! Best to you Joe!
RIP Les Paul. It's great to know that you got to meet him Joe... I hope that you can share some of your experience with seeing him... you rock my friend.
Guitarists like Joe are a wunderkind its bizaar enough understanding where exactly the level of intelligence, skill in music comes from so early. Usually one has to go yrs and yrs to reach that level of playing even the with the players that are already great. He captured all of that and has much more to put out. Sungha is another comes to mind. Joe picks all the styles and gets them down even the mad riffery! I'm sure alot has to do with video tutorials like Joe said himself but also the will.
Joe, you have a great talent like Tommy Emmanuel. I met Tommy and Les Paul two times .I saw in this video that you have play with Les Paul at the Iridium Club(N.Y.) Renald From Québec(Canada)
no worries, mate!! Best thing to do is stretch your forearms, make sure that you have plenty of blood in your hands, push - ups are good to get the blood pumping, and NEVER force tension - i think the secret to good technique is to totally isolate and control every movement in a tension free way... then again im not a doctor.... if you get RSI, see a back specialist - it will usually be coming from your back or neck... Take care....Joe
joe you the real guitar hero, show the world what australia made of mate, love to see you making millions one day. all the best from everyone youve inspired (including me)
I'm from Hungary, and I just want to say, You are brilliant. Yesterday I found you on youtube, and i can't stop watching and listening your plays. I watched the talent's videos, and I was not surprised, when You won!!! CONGARTULATION.
Do you have your own CD yet? Where can i buy one? Maybe download in mp3? I want to listen your music when Im on the road too, not close to internet!
hey mate, thanks for the message!I taught myself alot of music harmony from books.I even sat a 6th grade exam and passed, but i am a very lousy sightreader. I learn most of my songs by watching vids, or just by ear.
But i think the best way to really improve you ear is to go and jam with people you have never played with. Go find a busker on the street, and play lead along with him! Playing songs publicly that you've never heard before will sure get your ear to sharpen up! All the best, Joe
Joe, how do you keep the groove? Do you use a drum machine or metronome?
By the way, well done, mate! So many of the musos I've spoken to are proud of you for getting fingerstyle guitar out there in the mainstream with the Talent win.
You're a very interesting player and it's great to see that you're not a clone of someone else. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new album.
Hey Gerry, Thanks mate!! I really appreciate that, it means alot! I guess the best way to keep the groove, is to try and study different rhythms... try and get the notes between the beats groovin'. I think it is the hardest thing to work on... and im constantly learning new ways to play 'in the pocket'... sometimes when im up on stage... all that goes out the window, though!!
I agree, it's great to see people getting into fingerstyle and Joe, you clearly have a very special gift. I disagree about the clone comment though, he's clearly Tommy Emmanuel's youthful body double... which is obviously a huge compliment!! All the best :)
Have to disagree with you there. In the same way that Tommy is not a Chet clone, Joe can play that stuff but he's showing that he can do more as well. Gareth Pearson is another great young player from the same school.
@skint0n0minted, that's not true. Adam Rafferty doesn't use one. Here's what he says: "I have never, ever, ever practiced with a metronome. I do not recommend it at all. I’ve tried a few times, but shut the damn thing off after 5 minutes, for real. No joke."
@skint0n0minted no he doesn't and that's the point. He wouldn't be doing shows with Joe and Tommy Emmanuel if his timing sucked. Have you seen any of his clips?
wow. you blow my mind. All the amazing guitar players ive seen are well... pretty old. You're my role model. o.o inspiring. Do you SERIOUSLY play the guitar all the time?? Even when you're.. *giggle* checking the FRIDGE?!
Hi there... thanks for the message!! I try to play as much as i can, if i dont i lose my chops, so its a constant working progress!! I love it though....
good that u love what you're doing. Keep posting videos here on YouTube, that way many people can enjoy watching ur incredible progress. :) Keep rocking on.
Your a national and international star, I hope your happy, you've made me deeply jealous! All Aussies should be so proud to say this guy comes from our country.
Hi Andre'... thanks for the message! I use 12/53 gauge GHS strings... but with a very low action. I used 11/52 when i was younger for a little bit though. Hope this helps!!

Hi Joe,
you are technically very talented.
May I suggest you also try to play with feeling?
Sometimes you play so quickly the notes do hardly have time to get out of your guitar.
Quicker is not always more beautiful. Anyway that is my "constructive" comment.
For the rest, I can only envy your talent in a healthy way.
Keep on playing! I have suscribed to your channel, so am looking out for more of your vids.
Regards from Spain,
Carlos

@gesunelson yeah but hes obviouslly got shit timing if he can't play to a metronome.

@gesunelson he probly learnt to keep time by working out songs and playing along to them.
skint0n0minted 1 year ago
@skint0n0minted nah, he actually uses a drum machine since he says a metronome has no groove.

When you have to check the fridge you don't have to stop playing. You can still do some hammer-ons and pull-offs with your left hand...
