@duncan7599 it depends on the a/c type. on the newer planes like the 777, the fuel dump valve releases the fuel like a mist of sort and so it evaporates. On older types it just rains fuel to the ground
It dumped fuel because its max. takeoff weight is always greater that the max. landing weight. it cant fly with the wheels down because it affects the drag of the plane, and probably would've run out of fuel somewhere over the ocean so it's just bet to dump the fuel to lose weight so they can land within the max landing wieght of the airport
@Mayumiko the landing gear couldnt be retracted ?? so it was already out so they could land..u cant fly half way around the world with the landing gear hanging out
It happened almost one year ago. That time I was on the airplane with my husband and my parents. I didn't realize how bad the situation might be or might not be that time until I saw the flight attendants' crying red eyes after landing successfully. Now watching this video agaig, I found it lucky to bring my digital camera with me that time and take this video for my memory. I still fly with United. It's not the best airline to fly to Aisa, but neither the worst. Just a very convenient choice.

What shouldn't we beleeve? That a fully loaded 747 can not land with it's wings an center tank full of fuel? It actually can't! There is also to much stress for the wings (and of course the landing gear)!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if the fuckin landing gear cannot take the stress from the weight of the plan why it did so at the first place before take off!!?? I fuckin hate things complaining about things after stepping in showing off they can take the job then start to cry demanding weird things! landing gear shouldn't been hired at the first place...
Planes fully fueled have no problems taking off, that's why there are long runways to build speed. Landing with a plane full of fuel is putting intense strain on the landing gear all at once.

u r wrong my friend! land slowly and let the plane touch the ground gently, there will be no problems at all!! You are right only if the pilot is scared and want to land asap, then for sure he will damage the plane even if it is empty of fuel and people and only him in it!! just take it easy, slowly, gently, take your time and every thing will be fine..
Landing slow with 15 hours worth of fuel and a payload of cargo and passengers is not exactly as easy as you make it seem.
No 747 pilot with 15 hours worth of fuel is going to feel scared and land asap especially when there are 416 lives plus crew on board. You would be sitting on a ticking time-bomb.
this isn't a cessna dumb ass. These thing have a stalling speed fully loaded of over 180 knots. when it goes under that speed it falls out of the sky. If you trying doing a soft field approach, high angle of attack with higher power so you can fly slower, 1 the plane become uncontrollable, 2 you'll smack the tail on the runway damaging the plane and killing people. 3 you'll run out of runway
do you have any idea how hard it is just to stop one of those even low on fuel. landing with 15 hours of fuel is a guaranteed overshoot, and brake fire. know ur facts before u talk
Wtf are you on about. LOL. They're not gonna retract the landing gear on the ground are they, they didnt know it wasnt gonna retract did they :/ Jeez.
maybe, but at least the aircraft doesnt disintergrate on landing because its too heavy and killing hundreds of passengers and crew to a horrible death! i know which i would prefer!
damn we pay for the gas and now we just throw it in the air just great!

Does anyone know what happens to the dumped fuel? Does it evaperate or does it pollute the air and ground?

@nielscarp More money is lost IF people die...compensation is expensive... But I agree...it's painful to watch.
Mayumiko 1 year ago
rare to see an airliner dump fuel.. they usually fly with just enough fuel to get you to your destination to save money.
gypsykingg 1 year ago
@gypsykingg Well they had to dump it because they would crash if they turned around and landed right away.
TheLiftoffExperement 1 year ago
Now you know where the fire ball comes from when an airplane crashes, Aircrafts are just flying fuel ;-) fly safe!

Wow. $50,000 to $70,000 of fuel down the drain, if I'm doing the math right. That's got to hurt the airline a bit.
