  • awsome :)

  • hi davie, a great fry pattern, tell us this davie, what epoxy resin where you using for the head area, davy antrim.

  • Hi Davy,

I used a clear five minute epoxy from Halfords but I hope to buy the epoxy which sets with a UV Light, as far as I believe it's the same as the one that dentists use.

    All the best Davie

  • Heya Davie,

have you tried a urethane finish instead of epoxy? No two part mess (or UV light!). I have tried it on some bead nymph casings and it seems to be nice and clear/glossy.

    What do you think?

BTW, great vids, always look forward to a new pattern from you, although that ghost fly was a bit of a monster!

  • Hi MrCafe133,

I've never tried a urethane finish, but it sounds easier than the others what brand do you use?

    All the best Davie

  • Hello Davie,

the product is called Liquid Fusion by Duncan Crafts - no not a Scottish firm, but here in California (website is duncancrafts - search for "urethane").

It runs to around USD$6 for 2 fl oz (59 ml). I is labelled as non-toxic and is water soluble when in liquid form (easy cleanup). It dries to a hard glossy waterproof clear coat with little, if any shrinkage.

    Hope that helps.

    Tight lines, Cafe

  • Hi Cafe,

Many thanks for the help I should be able to source it over here..

    All the best Davie

  • If you were going to put a throat on this pattern (sorta like the Irish Cormorant) would you use a lighter color?

  • Hi ru4phoucnserios,

My first choice would be red next would be black but you could easily tye in a few different colours or even a bit of flash...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie

That is a great little fly. The shape is nice I am going to tie some up for sure.

    Thanks for the great video

    Chance

  • Beautiful, Davie, as always. Did you find a replacement for the Thompson scissors? What are they?

    Thanks,

    kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

I'm mostly using a pair of Anvils and as well a black handle copy which are not too bad. But I was lucky enough to find a pair of the Thomspon midge which are being sharpened just now as they had been used a bit so here's hoping they last as long as my old pair..

    All the best Davie

  • Davie,

can you tell me what brand of bobbin you use, it doesnt seem you ever pull the thread out like i do , is it all about getting the right tension?

as many others, i truly enjoy and want to thank you for sharing your skill with us.

    Dave

    Pennsylvania USA

p.s. you are welcome anytime at my club! i mean that.

  • Hi Dave,

If I ever get a chance to visit Pennsylvania I would certainly drop by your club...

The bobbin holder I use is a Tiemco heavy ceramic, and like you said it's important to adjust the arms of the bobbin holder so that the thread flows smoothly from it at the right tension...

    All the best Davie
