Scotto (along with Freni) is the last in the great line of Italian sopranos. I don't hear this technique or mastery of vocal effects in contemporary singers. Her opening Prendi sums up the whole tradition in two notes!

I loved this too coloraturafan., I'm not sure if it was a telecast, I don't remember it, but this had to have been from maybe early 60's. I always thought she was a true coloratura and had she stayed in that fach instead of singing those late verdi heavy roles, not to mention the verismo things, then her voice would have lasted. Even Puccini had to have been bad for this kind of voice. Some people cant do everything. This was lovely even with the cuts- Grazie o carino, Ernesto

My God, Scotto is just superb here. This was my first Elixir on video and I consider it still the best to this day. Don't know why she doesn't sing "Il mio rigor dimentica" though.

Of course, Bergonzi is brilliant also - before Scotto's aria he did "Una furtiva lagrima" to die for. This is a great performance, you should definitely see it from start to finish (it's available on DVD if I'm not mistaken).
