  • The guitar Ry is playing is a Japanese made Tiesco and is worth about $150 in todays market, that takes some confidence to play such an odd guitar live.

  • @datdereduck Ry could play the crapiest guitar ever and still make it sound fabulous.

  • A real SUPERGROUP!!!!

  • ...great solo's

  • guthrie /seeger/ledbetter/weavers/leventhal--- seeds of the folk movement-------

  • Leadbelly'd be proud if he could have heard this.

  • Isn't it wierd i also have a friend irene

  • Listening to music like this is like herbs of life. So wonderful.

  • Great performance,,,,my wifes name is Irene and she is not too well at the moment,so good night Irene and I'll see you in my dreams...Nite nite sleep tight..

  • Next time I visit my town, I will pay respect to the site of my grandmother figure, Irene. She died when I was six, and I wasn't given the choice to go. I didn't even know she was dead until my sister came home one day, laughed in my face, and said, "Irene's dead, we watched her get buried!!!" That was my introduction to death: to treat it so swiftly and lightly.

  • I'm Irene, thanks wonderful rendition XX

  • did u notice a young muhammad ali ??

  • Makes me wanna down a sixpack of beer, and I do not even care that much for beer ~.~

  • @PRAussie Cheers. In my defence, I was arseholes when I posted that but I'm guessing y'all got my drift.

  • @PRAussie I know better than to get in a urinating derby in a YouTube comments thread but, with all due respect, it's gonna come as a great surprise to Flaco Jimenez to learn he's a Zydeco player.

Can I suggest we all just lay back and enjoy the show?

  • @beachdog67 well it should come as a greater surprise to you that I never called him a Zydeco player. This is Zydeco style is all I'm saying. The Mexican musical instruments sorta hides it. Like wow.. what was the big deal?

  • @PRAussie Of course, you are absolutely correct, my friend.

Please forgive my effrontery in venturing to comment.

And now, back to more music.

  • @PRAussie Turnin ta more positive things, ya got any recommendations for more o' the same? Choice cuts I might not be aware of??

  • @dermotwalker ever since I commented here, even though I tried to be the extremely respectful, never used foul language, all my comments are now "pending approval." Please delete all my comments from here. I regret ever saying anything.

  • @PRAussie Yeah, I find things I posted disappear, reappear and move about all over the gaffe too. Doesn't seem to be any logic to it and I'm guessing there probably isn't. Not sure I get why you're posting that 'at' me though. I can't find my own, much less delete yours though again, if you got any zydeco recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

  • @dermotwalker just respectfully not ignoring you. Just don't want to participate here anymore. Search Zydeco and you'll find so much good stuff. Sounds very similar to this; just better. Sorry. Goodnight YouTube.

  • what a beautiful melting pot of americana.

  • ........simply great.

  • Ry sure seems to be partial to those tie dye shirts. I wonder if he has a whole wardrobe full of them. Maybe he even makes them himself. You know something that he does with the family on weekends he's not touring.

  • mississippi john hurt rules....

  • wow

  • Ry defines eclectic playing. Is there a genre that he Hasn't explored?

  • @Bilco1949 Yeah, he's pretty versatile but I've never heard him play flamenco. He's done so many great collaborations with musicians from other genres (Ali Farka Touré, V M Bhatt, Manuel Galbán) that it always surprises me that he hasn't tried it. I'd love to hear him play with Paco de Lucía. Al di Meola and John McLaughlin did a pretty good job so go on Ry, give it a try. By the way, love that Teisco Spectrum V. It has such a pure sound. Just like ringing a bell.

  • One of my many favourite Ry Cooder Tracks, thanks Ry,and thanks 'mbroders' for your YOUTUBE placement too,Murray in Scotland.

  • adorei,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • Ca c'est de la musik!

  • I remember my parents listening to this all the time when I was a kid...they had several Ry Cooder albums and I had forgotten how much I liked him.

  • Incredibly creative mix of cultures. I just love this.

  • Wonderful!! Greetings to one and all from Big Hugh of Mundlimup in fabulous Western Australia.

  • Ry Cooder has been blind in one eye from an accident when he was 4 years old---for your information---he is not high on drugs.

Thank you Ry Cooder for all of your wonderful music through out the years!!

  • Is that Flaco Jimenez on the accordion ?

  • @Bluesquest yes it is! fantastic player.

  • I feel fortunate to having seen this tour when they played Wolfgangs in SF. Went both nights. I have pictures to prove it! Saw Lyle Lovett last night - his gig is similiar....large band, and great vocalists in Sir Harry, Sweet Pea, and Willie Green Jr.

  • @rpdugoni now, that's a great chorus setup! - Lyle is not using Arnold McCuller anymore ?

  • Looks like ole Ry had a few too many lol and he stll kicks ass !!

  • i really want to find an album version of this, does anyone know where i can find a recording?

  • @ColonelChamberlain It is be found on Ry Cooders legendary album "Chicken skin music". It's a very recommendable album...

  • cool,Ryan is playing an old Teisco guitar.

  • Thanks, brings back memories from the three concerts i´ve seen with him and always ended with this one. Taught the guitar from imitating him, the little i know!

  • Flaco Jimenez is the Eric Clapton of the squeeze box

  • Is the guitar here made from glass? It surely looks just like it. A Fender?

  • it very well might be...i have one :)

  • Why don't you test if it's made of glass? Why not go playing with it like Pete Townshend.

  • this is a set that should be inwardly

    digested,precise,tight yet passionate...

    jonathing

  • Is that Flaco Jiminez on acordian?

    ... can't get enough Ry.

  • Yes that is Flaco

  • @VenaliaOfWoW YES, the one and only!

  • Why wouldn't he be able to put thogether a group like this one?

He's fuckin one of the greatest guitarist ever.

  • The Accordionplayer is the Best i`ve ever heard, so much soul !!!!!

  • Great version. Loved it! Man, how did he put that band together? Awesome group!!!

  • Looks like good old Ry had a few too many lol . I love this guy !!! Very under rated , one of the greatest of my generation :) keep on truckin Ry !...thanks for this post

  • this is just fantastic!!!!

  • Check out Ry Cooder's contribution to John Hiatt's "Bring The Family"..."Lipstick Sunset" is amazing.

  • bradzoot

you are wrong, this is tex mex, he got into cuban music later in.

  • For anybody that might know...What are some good Ry Cooder albums? I'd like to get into him. He's fucking amazing. But I don't know where to start and I don't want to buy a shittier one and not get any other for fear that I won't like the others.

  • A couple of good albums would be Borderline and Bop Till You Drop.

  • There you go... you can't go wrong with any of Ry's albums. Here are some:

    Ry Cooder 1970

    Into the purple valley 1972

    Boomer's story 1972

    Paradise and lunch 1974

    Chicken skin music 1976

    Showtime 1977

    Jazz 1978

    Bop till you drop 1979

    Borderline 1980

  • I am wrong just checked on wikipedia, that was a different period. sorry

  • Might be wrong but I think the musicians were Cuban.

  • What kind of electric guitar is Ry playing? He sure can make it sing!! Nice post!

  • Ry is playing a Taisco Spectrum 5 made in Japan, probably in the sixties. Mark Knopfler has another one.

  • Ry is playing a Taisco Spectrum 5 made in Japan, probably in the sixties. Mark Knopfler has another one.

  • This was a great Ry Cooder band which toured and I saw them in London. His Texmex period awesome slide guitar with all the mexican musicians great concert. His backing singers including Bobby King fantastic.

  • FANTASTIC

    FANTASTICCCCCC Thanks for post.

  • My brother played this with his blues harp at the end of my fiancés funeral on a hill in Scotland under a rainy sky .

This version of Ry Cooder just meets my emotions, thinking back to that day in April 2004.

It made a perfect final to a great but too short life of a very unique, cheerful, openminded, caring and warmhearted person, who loved life, laughter, music - and me.

r.i.p. my darling xxx never forgotten

    Andrea from Berlin/Germany

  • Big hug!

  • wtf are you talking about, you have obviously never seen NY live, he takes it to the edge every time while Ry sits pandering

  • much as i rate Neil Young, putting him and Ry Cooder in the same sentence, and as comparable guitarists, is complete bollocks.

Funny thing is, I'd bet a beer or two that NY would agree

  • This performance is a good example of why Ry Cooder is not the household name of, say, Neil Young or Jackson Browne. He took this song deeper than even Leadbelly, the author, did. It's great work, but I have to wonder what it was like for the audience, expecting some rock 'n roll thrills.

  • I was there that night and, like the rest of the audience, loved this rendition. We knew who we were seeing and that's why he sold the place out. It's not like we showed up expecting the guy to play Whipping Post or Freebird (thank God)

  • Thanks for saying that..People seem to think that tour was watched by a bunch of bozos...A smart band and a smart audience, that's my opinion.

  • this is pretty bad for ry he looks wasted maybe Irene turned her back and took a morph overdose - but he is still better than most even in that condition - there is enough rock music in this world thankfully he is not like neil etc etc etc he does his own thing and his approach is unique
