  • No crying back in the good old days

  • il never forget that hit amazing sammy did that all the time sammy white was a beast

  • Comment removed

  • @6400az

That hit took Sammy White out of the game. The TD he caught in the game was in the 3rd quarter when the Raiders already led 19-0. The TATUM hit took place in the 4th quarter and without looking at the remainder of the game, I can not verify if he ever came back in the game, but its likely that if he did, it was after the Willie Brown Int return that made the score 32-7, and that was when Madden emptied the Raider's bench. So, its likely that White came in while Tatum was on bench.

  • @rockne88

Your right on the 19-0 point, but wrong the rest of the way!To suggest that White was afraid of Tatum is an opinion based on inaccurate facts.

The hit, did take White out of the game, but he DID come back in.The proof is right on the screen,@1:00 it reads 3 catches for 40 yards,...he ended the day with 5 catches for 77 yards.

He WAS in the game BEFORE the Brown int. Take a look at the video. At a distant you can clearly see White behind the sprinting Brown.

  • 6400 ITS Clear you are a vikes fan. Its all good. What can NOT be denied, and never has been by anyone, is the FORCE with which Tatum BLEW UP Sammy White on that play and many others in his career. He REINVENTED the position from one of surveying the field and trying to swat balls down or make the last tackle, to one of FEROCIOUS hitting and intimidation. Just look at the Safetys that flourished throughout the NFL in the 1980's, (Lott,Fencick, Plank, Shell etc) all influenced by Tatum !

  • @rockne88

Did follow the Vikings, but never denied Tatums hard hit.

You have a point about how the position use to be played. But discretion must be excercised when you say he reivented the position. BEFORE Tatum, there where plenty of DB hitters as well. Night Train Lane ( voted second hardest hitter). Larry Wilson,Willie Wood,Karl Kassulke,Ken Huston, Fred "The Hammer" Williamson etc.One could say, Tatum and others where influenced by them!

  • Sammy White fears death more than ever, knowing that Jack and Skip are waiting in the clouds for him.

  • @CynicJRH

Nah,.... off on the analogy. Sammy White caught the ball on Tatum's hit, later came back into the game caught a few more balls including a TD.

No,.... White's not afraid of those guys.

  • @CynicJRH I say that's a catch by Sammy White.

  • This Raider fan gives the love for hanging on the ball after a hit like that.

  • Today this a huge fine. This was the REAL NFL.Today NFL is watered down

  • @skywalker7327 You said it! And basketball is pathetic compared to what it used to be.

  • @Strongboy1770 Yeah I miss the REAL NFL. Now you have to wrap WR. Or its a big fine.NFL is worse this year than last year. You got rookie QBs Andy Dalton and Cam Newton pass for 300 yards plus every game so far.RIDICULOUS!!! Both teams were bad last year too. Watered down and ruined

  • :10 this is so embarassing im just gonna put my head down

  • Yes it was a helluva hit but you got to hand it to Sammy for hanging on to the pass, that is the most amazing part of the play.

  • The BEST part of this hit, was when after the hit Jack Tatum stands over him and looks at him, and throws his arms at him basically saying "You Fucking Pussy!"...he was hella disrespectful, he should just spit on him too lol

  • Skip Thomas died, 3 days ago.

  • that hit was bad ass

  • great video, is that 1080p??

  • If I'm Planning on getting paid as much as they do, Dang skippy I'm gonna expect this kinda stuff and you can bet I'll get in shape and not complain about what I know I got into. The game is FOOTBALL. NOT Golf.

  • Dats a tackle

  • thats football

  • I don't know why on Earth helmet-to-helmet wasn't a 15 yard penalty back then. People often say the newer rules protect the players too much, but come on. When you watch something like this you realize why most of the changes have been good and necessary.

  • @danning1 If you look at that hit, TATUM never hit him with the helmet... he BLASTED him with his shoulder , and that was why the collision was so animated. Also, Dr. Death Skip Thomas #26 is coming across Sammie White (# 85 of Minn. ) with a forearm (a legal move at that time) and it collides simultaneously with Tatum's impact, and that causes the helmet to come off as fast and furiously as it does... but the floating chin strap that popped off was even more incredible !!!

  • @rockne88

Actually, Tatum hit the bottom of Whites' facemask with the top of his helmet. White was in position to brace himself but the forearm by Thomas tilted his head and he was'nt able to cover up in time.

NFL Films it shows it more clear .

  • The hit was legal back then, but in today's game both DB's would have been flagged. One DB hit him to the head with a forearm, and the other helmet to helmet. Come to think of it, on the street both would have been sent to prison. What this tells me is that Sammy White was not a good receiver.....Sammy White was a GREAT receiever.

  • Holy shit he held on to the ball

  • i wouldv drop the ball as soon as i saw Tatum.. can't believe he held on to the ball, im a chiefs fan but jack tatum is one of my favorite players..

  • how the hell did he caught it those were the badass raiders shit

  • "he held onto the ball", he's half dead but held onto the ball lol. Tatum was a bad motherfucker, stone cold killer. RIP

  • one of kind tatum

  • @biollante62 no, pop culture is stupid. I won't use the term masses because i'm not an elitist. Sports provide something no other entertainment or art can.

  • he fucking broke his helmet :O

  • Sports are stupid, opiate for the brain dead masses

  • @biollante62 go grab you skinny jeans and ur pabst u fucking hipster

  • @biollante62 so is culture. How does that feel jack ass. I don't go on clips of guys showing how to cut hair and say that's lame. Why in god's name did you even click on this link? Why do people do this on Youtube? Justin Bieiber doesn't just start playing when you load Youtube. If you don't like something watch something you do like; if you can't accomplish that on Youtube than I'm amazed you can even use a computer. Try searching for "advice for assholes with too much time on their hands".

  • Now this is how football should be played. No wack penalties that you see today.

  • hey shittsburgh fans, if palomalu is so great, why dont they have an award named after him? you know, kinda like the "Jack Tatum Hit of the Week." can anyone answer that for me?

  • @deacongowan the Jack Tatum award was created 11 years after he retired. Troy Polamalu is still an active player in his prime you dumbfuck.

  • @raggedtraveler polamalu is decent, but not feared and intimidating. he cant even play a whole season cuz his fragile weak ass is always gimped up on the sideline

  • @deacongowan hey douchebag, you wanna know why the hit in this video was so brutal? Because it was ILLEGAL! EVERYTHING THAT THEY DID BACK THEN IS NOW ILLEGAL TO DO! POLAMALU CAN'T MAKE HELMET TO HELMET HITS LIKE JACK TATUM DID OR HE WOULD GET FINED/SUSPENED. Everything in the god damn NFL is weak. Polamalu is still one of the god damn best players in the NFL and he's still intimidatiing. So go back to shoving your hand in your ass twat stain

  • @raggedtraveler stop whinning you fucking pussy ass faggott. people were terrified of tatum. they werent terrified fo polamalu. goldie locks was a ball hawk, tatum was an assassin and scared recievers more.

  • @deacongowan why did you reply to me twice? lol you dumbass faggot. must really be jealous of polamalu making millions and world famous while your fatass is hating on the internet your moms paying for. dahaha what a loser XD

  • @deacongowan Earl Campbell was not scared of Tatum?

  • what a catch! :O

  • damn dat nigger be hittin like a damn hardcore nigger...damn dat nigger be hittin...dat nigger dead as fuck now but in da day dat nigger be hottin...dat niggger went howm afder da supabowl and done ate hisself a niggaload of waddamelon and chicken...damn dat nigger be hardcore...my nigger. (I be black so I write nigga)

  • what was it that knocked sammy white's helmet off? the hit by tatum or the closeline attempt from #26 skip thomas? or the combination of the 2? watch the replay closely. #26 tries to decapitate the reciever.

  • you can tell this is 1970's football. The announcer is talking about the player coming back in the game after a concusssion

  • This is how it's pose to be played they were alot tougher bak then then now an plus this was the most kindess person u can meat so ppl that's sayin fucc him go get hit by his ass bet u won't be sayin that shit any more hahaha

  • Tatum hit his ass so hard he's now white. R.I.P Tatum.

  • Notice that the other bum hit White in the head with his forearm.

  • he paralyzed and later killed Darryl Stingley .. its stupid that you people are praising him

  • @AA23C

First off, it was a clean hit on Stingly, Stingly made the error of ducking his head, which you're taught NOT to do.

Second, Stingley died years later, and never forgave Tatum, even though Tatum made several (not just when he wrote a book) attempts to apologize to Stingley. Stingley couldn't be the bigger man. Know your football history, or keep silent to avoid looking like a fool.

  • @quietriotfan1976

It was a clean hit at the time I'll give you that .. however the other shit you said was just bullshit. Stingley did die years later from complications from the injuries. They were set to appear on a t.v. show together as a reunion however when Stingley heard that Tatum was going to plug his book he pulled out because he didnt want to be apart of an advertising ploy. Just typical unfounded arrogance from an OSU and Raider player.

  • @AA23C

Al Davis did an interview, in which he said (something that even Madden himself has confirmed) that the publisher of Tatum's book tried to pull off the TV deal, Not Tatum. Tatum sent a card to Stingley's son when Darryl junior got injured badly in an Arena League game. Darryl senior sent the card back. The only one who carried the grudge was Stingley.

  • @quietriotfan1976 so if you got paralyzed because someone was trying to play a game the way its not even supposed to be played you wouldnt be mad? dont get me wrong, tatum was a great athlete but he was cheap 50% of the time. every hit you see on this video would be illegal in today's football.

  • @2d181

This just shows how utterly clueless you are about the NFL in the 1970's. It was a clean hit by the standards of the 1970's. And if I got paralyzed on a hot like that, I'd be upset, but I'd know its a risk of playing the game. Just look at guys like Reggie Brown, Mike Utley, Dennis Byrd, and Nick (sorry for the butchered spelling) Bounacotti's son. They all got paralyzed playing the game (Byrd has since relearned to walk), and they understoodf it wa s arisk they took every sunday.

  • R.I.P..jack...and dandy don...

  • Garbage Assinations.....No fan or player wants to see someone in a wheelchair.

Thank God the modern day NFL rules and fines evolved.

That hit was Helment to Helmet in its purest form.

    That guy played garbage hits....period.

  • From a time when the the players could ht and take a hit. A time before free agency and corperate perversion. Rip J.T.

  • @truepain7 You're definately the stupidest person thats ever posted a comment on youtube.

  • @DNSK FUCK YO MAMA DADDY SISTER BROTHER AND YO WHOLE FAMILY NIGGA DATS MY POPS BITCH DONT BE MAD CUZ KANSAS SUCKS HARD COCK

  • Fuck Jack Tatum the biggest asshole in the history of football. I hope he is rotting in hell for his despicable treatment of Darryl Stingley after he paralzyed the man in an EXHIBITION game.

  • They're trying to make a violent game less so these days by over-regulation, and I'll tell you what, just as many people got carted off on stretchers this year as any year I've seen in 30 years

It's like not accepting the reality that football is violent by nature with high risk of injury

I believe in not allowing late hits on QBs like they used to and I'm cool with outlawing helmet to helmet on WR's going for the ball, but its gotten ridiculous

  • @PorkFrog did they allow u to tackle the kicker back then?

  • @LamborghiniRida only if he had the ball. Had the same 'roughing' and 'running' into rules back then to protect him during the kick, but if he tried to run with it or get in on the tackle....

  • I see a lot of younger folks on here who don't remember football in the 70's are calling Tatum a scumbag etc etc

For those kids, that was football back then-helmet hits and blows to the head were legal and separating WR's from the ball was coached[still is]

Tatum wasn't some lone outlaw hitting with the helmet, he just did it better than everybody else

  • @PorkFrog It was also a much more defensive game back then. Most of the time WR stuck to the lines and only went to the middle of the field when they had to. I think the main point is that Fantasy Football has ruined Football...It's all stats. Everybody needs their god damn stats and updates on players for their fantasy leagues and that is what the game is centered around now. Over the past ten years, so many useless stats have been created just for the use of Fantasy fuck football It's bullshit

  • @PorkFrog Your sooo rite.

  • this is a video of a good hit and a even better catch

  • Comment removed

  • white knew he was gunna get killed but hey he held on to it...id kill the qb if i was white

  • @peleth That's a hell of a list there, and I agree with what you say. I'd add John Lynch to that list though, he's probably the hardest hitting safety of the late 90's early 00's.

  • straight to paradise kid....you were true to you!

alot more than the rest of these phonies could ever say and mean as a motherfucker

  • I'm a young guy but I think Ed "Too Tall" Jones is getting forgotten in this conversation. But as a Raiders fan I gotta say it's between Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum as far as guys who could generate "take you out of the game" type hits and not be 300 lbs. As hard as these guys hit getting picked up and planted like a rose bush by Albert Haynesworth or some other fat ass lineman hurts as much as anything in football. Pads and helmets do nothing with that many meatball subs piling down on you.

  • dirty thug

  • R.I.P Best free safety ever lived

  • Ha Ha!! You got love it. No flags for helmet to helmet. Notice even the announcers don't start crying for poor Sammy White like they would today. May be the NFL should put all the wide receivers in car seats so they don't get hurt.

  • Rest in peace scumbag, nice forearm to the helmet to knock it off. They should have tacked on 15 yards on that play and ejected the scum.

  • @JrDukie this was when football was for gladiators, not superstars. totally different game jrdukie

  • damn he looked like he was goin 10mph

  • @coolmusicforyou1 i meant 100 mph lol

  • ohh lets play the hit where he broke that guys back for no reason in a preseason game, then acted like a piece of shit and not care. ya what a dirty faggot i hope someone shits on his dead body.

  • @4341130 u just jealous cause he was a good takler back in the day

  • @4341130 why da fuck should apologize from a hit, vicious hit ok but its football...so get the fuck off u little criying bitch hahaha one of the best secondary ever and u cant change that faggot

  • Comment removed

  • #26 was going for the head....the raiders made a living off cheap shots, head hunting and then they have the unmitigated gall to defend their actions...all their dbs cared about was twisting neck and blasting wrs in head

  • @leonetski What I said about MelC54 goes for you too. It's people like you two that have made the N.F.L. into a bitch ass pussy sport. You sound like girls after I have fucked them really hard complaning that "I didn't need to hit it that hard" You two are so much like bitches you make me want to bend you over and fuck you like one. Grow some balls and a dick you wine ass crying little bitches, and start acting like men. oh and p.s fuck your mothers.

  • Gotta give Sammy White some props for managing to hold onto both his head and the ball on that one.

  • Jack Tatum rules, but I gotta give props to Sammy White for being able to hold on to that ball after being hit!

  • RIP the most Dangerous Man to in NFL secondary history. Legends cast Shadows. What a G!

  • CHEAP SHOT ARTIST.

  • @MelC54 MelC54 This world would be a better place if your bitch, cunt, whore mother would have had an abortion.

  • @fatmusicbooster And you are living proof that your mother should have SWALLOWED

  • LONG LIVE THE ASSASSIN! your the king of defence JT.

  • @Qdrum803 Long LIVE? LOL.

  • this is the football I remember, you earned your 1,000 yards either rushing or receiving not these suckers today getting their yards like water. before 1978 you earned those yards over a defense's dead bodies, Jack Lambert was right when he said "they want to protect QBS let them wear skirts"

  • Much respect for Sammy White, the 1976 NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year...what alot of people don't know, is that, Sammy White is Walter Payton's cousin...

  • Leading with the helmet is extremely dangerous and should never be allowed again in the NFL.

  • Jack Tatum, R.I.P.

  • The most impressive thing about that play wasn't the hit it was that White was a great enough player with guts to hold on to the ball.

  • RIP Jack. You rule. Palomalu couldn't clean your cleats.

  • Comment removed

  • @JoshKasper10 i wouldnt say all that, 2 different kinds of players

  • @JoshKasper10 Dick-rider.

  • @iClassiqaL your mom

  • @JoshKasper10 I like how you didn't deny my accusation. Way to admit that you're gay, bro.

  • @JoshKasper10 I know I'm a little biased, but this isn't a completely homer statement....Polamalu would have done very well in any era of football. I'm not saying he would have been better than Tatum, but can you imagine what he would do w/o rule restrictions? Tatum certainly did make the Steelers/Raiders games that much better though.

  • @JoshKasper10 You'd be a FOOL to disrespect Troy. He is a truly great player and has made some incredible plays in his career. He's not as great as Jack, but nobody was as feared as him.

  • @5lowrollD consider T-Roy and the rest of the Steelers, DISRESPECTED. 13 thumbs up and counting...

  • @JoshKasper10 Fuck You! when The Steelers win Super Bowl XLV with Troy Polamalu you'll come out of the closet and act as though you wanted to see them win the whole time. 13 thumbs down for your stupid-ass comment

  • @5lowrollD Polamalu > Tatum, and wtf "has made (some) incredible plays in his career", from 2010 alone : Week 1 v.s Falcons, interception to force overtime which the Steelers win 15-9, week 2 v.s Titans endzone interception and diving over the line on a forth-and-goal at the 1 to save a touchdown Steelers win 19-11, week 12 v.s Bills interception at the 1 Steelers win 19-16, week 13 v.s Ravens down by 4 with 3 minutes sack fumble to set up game winning drive steelers win afc north.

  • @JoshKasper10

amen to that... he was a buckeye too!!! :D

  • @JoshKasper10 Jack Tatum sucks, Troy Polamalu doesn't have to "clean his cleats" because statistically he can clean his clock. lets see :

-Tatum won 1 Super Bowl ('76) was the back-up and only played 5 games

-Polamalu has already won 2 Super Bowls ('05 ,'08) as the stater in every game

    -Tatum 3x Pro Bowl - 2x 2nd Team All-Pro

    -Polamalu 6x Pro Bowl - 3x 1st Team All-Pro

-Tatum washed-up career not in hall of fame (dead)

-Polamalu will be a first ballot hall of famer

  • @Terminator20791 Spot on. The difference between Polamalu and Tatum is simple: Polamalu's so active and is such a ball hawk, offenses have to at least try to scheme around him; all Tatum ever did was wait on his hits, even if it meant receivers making catches. Tatum's only exceptional skill was jarring the ball out of the receiver's hands. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't. One-dimensional. Polamalu's game is more complete--finishes tackles, lays the stick AND he can cover.

  • @RobDog65 your an idiot. how can you say polamalu's active and is such a ballhawk and that offenses scheme around him and all tatum did was was wait for hits. how can you say tatum waited for his hits, he attacked the player with his hits. he was and is the most feared safety EVER. people game planned around him all the time. so let me get this straight, tatum wasnt a ball hawk right? why does he have 37 career ints and polamalu has 27.

  • @Terminator20791 You realize the HoF is an absolute joke. Tatum should be in there. Using team achievements to say Polamalu is better is a joke. The league HATED the Raiders and a lot of them still do. Tatum had 37 career picks in only 10 NFL seasons. Troy P has 27 in 8 years and doesn't pack the punch like Tatum. Troy P is a HoFer i agree but better than Tatum? No.

  • Tatum hit Darryl Stingley with his shoulder causing him to be a quadriplegic for the rest of his life then died of heart disease and pneumonia which was a result of him being quadriplegic.

Tatum also hit a football with his shoulder which resulted with the immaculate reception (biggest fuck up in Raiders history).

He played the game with reckless abandon wildly hitting with an inability read defenses, and to top it off he talked alot of shit and did steroids

I'm glad he's dead Atkinson is next

  • "Watch this, 26 goes WHAM, Skip Thomas, WHAM 32, Tatum"

  • rip assassin

  • BOOMSHAKALAKA!

  • RIP Jack Tatum, you were one of THE hardest hitters in the NFL!

  • Never send your wideout to the inside with Tatum as Safety.

    RAIDER FOREVER!

  • @007RDRZ Yeah...never send your Grandmother (or Betty White in a pick up Thanksgiving day game) as she wouldn't be safe from 110% of his wrath either!!!

  • hahahaha jack could never play today. the hits he put on folks arent allowed anymore which would render him obsolete. the sports getting pussier and pussier as seasons go by. remember, we have to keep people "safe" lol fuckin ridiculous. we dont reward our players for hitting hard anymore. we punish them. RIP JACK TATUM. ohio and cali legendary athlete and no-shit taker. you are loved.

  • JACK TATUM. ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A RAIDER. RIP TATUM.

  • Rip jack. Go bucks

  • rest in peace jack. you were and always will be..the assassin

  • was that the infamous hit that paralyzed stingley?

  • @badaboytattoo considering:

    1) Stingley played for the pats

    2) Clearly the vikings are playing

    and very subtly

    3) the jersey on the back of the receiver says "S. White" (WHILE the announcer says Sammy White)

So to answer your question....Yes, this was the infamous hit on Daryl Stingley. He was just ringing for the Vikes at the time under a secret identity.

  • Rest in Peace, Assassin. You were one of a kind. Thanks for the memories.

  • HE HELD ON. RIP JACK

  • RIP Jack.... Buckeye for life.

  • RIP ''The Assassin"

  • R.I.P Jack "The Assassin" Tatum...

  • did he died?

  • R.I.P.

  • R.I.P MY NIGGA KNOCK DEZ NIGGAS UP IN HEAVEN

  • RIP Jack "The Assassin" Tatum

  • Damn i never noticed the sweet right Hook by Dr, Death until now

  • Thats r aider football baby

  • It sounds like Don Meredith's doing the color commentary here. I know Dandy Don left ABC for a couple of years in the '70's. ABC brought in folks like Alex Karras and Fran Tarkenton for a while in place of Dandy Don. But I totally forgot Meredith spent some time at NBC.

Jack Tatum was one of the most ferocious hitters in NFL history. There's many opposing wide receivers who faced Tatum that can't walk normally cause of Tatum's hits on them.

  • RIP to the Assasin, first off.

@RCmack this was Dandy Don's final NBC game before returning to the booth with Frank and Howard.

  • @Market42Fan While driving home from work, I heard on the radio about Jack Tatum's unfortunate death.

RIP, Jack. You will be missed.

  • wow all of the sudden the NFL board is gonnna make football into a pussy sport if they keep removing the past, cmon people, why do the NFL want to change the past just to make it a lil safer???

  • Ahhh I remember seeing that when I was 11. I was sooooo worried about the Raiders losing because everybody was picking the Vikings.

That's the way football USED to be played. To all the jerks who ask Tatum to apologize for hitting Stingley, go ta hell! He did what he was supposed to do. Stingley put his head down...and sadly, that was a tragic mistake.

  • the Raiders will never be good again as long as Al Davis is in charge

  • Pow! Right in the kisser!

  • Football was harder back then..but im glad they made facemasking illegal.

  • thats how you fucken hit baby fyi fuck jemarcuss

  • This is the first time I've seen this play in full. The catch was even more impressive than the hit.

  • This video should be called, "How to hold on to the rock"!

  • :33 You can see him look towards the middle, looking for tatum

  • "they call me assasin".......read that book by jack tatum...he was nasty......just plain nasty........

  • the was when football was FOOTBALL

  • why did he stand right over him after the hit? just standin their lookin like a retard with too many concussions

  • @REDFOLKEYES why the fuck do you care and make such a big deal about it? moron.

  • i never understand why players react like they did something so special, when they hit a player who didnt know he was coming. smh. sucker punches are honorable all of a sudden?

  • @SocaTrain Get a clue that was not a cheap shot. & if you had some balls & weren't such a bitch you would understand that. Idiot ass bitch.

  • I don't watch Football, ahem however.... HOLY FUCK!

  • wow back then osu players didnt have to learn how to tackle woody taught'em
