First off, it was a clean hit on Stingly, Stingly made the error of ducking his head, which you're taught NOT to do.
Second, Stingley died years later, and never forgave Tatum, even though Tatum made several (not just when he wrote a book) attempts to apologize to Stingley. Stingley couldn't be the bigger man. Know your football history, or keep silent to avoid looking like a fool.

They were set to appear on a t.v. show together as a reunion however when Stingley heard that Tatum was going to plug his book he pulled out because he didnt want to be apart of an advertising ploy. Al Davis did an interview, in which he said (something that even Madden himself has confirmed) that the publisher of Tatum's book tried to pull off the TV deal, Not Tatum. Tatum sent a card to Stingley's son when Darryl junior got injured badly in an Arena League game. Darryl senior sent the card back. The only one who carried the grudge was Stingley.

And if I got paralyzed on a hot like that, I'd be upset, but I'd know its a risk of playing the game. Just look at guys like Reggie Brown, Mike Utley, Dennis Byrd, and Nick (sorry for the butchered spelling) Bounacotti's son. They all got paralyzed playing the game (Byrd has since relearned to walk), and they understoodf it wa s arisk they took every sunday.

@PorkFrog It was also a much more defensive game back then. Most of the time WR stuck to the lines and only went to the middle of the field when they had to. I think the main point is that Fantasy Football has ruined Football...It's all stats. Everybody needs their god damn stats and updates on players for their fantasy leagues and that is what the game is centered around now. I'm a young guy but I think Ed "Too Tall" Jones is getting forgotten in this conversation. But as a Raiders fan I gotta say it's between Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum as far as guys who could generate "take you out of the game" type hits and not be 300 lbs. As hard as these guys hit getting picked up and planted like a rose bush by Albert Haynesworth or some other fat ass lineman hurts as much as anything in football. Pads and helmets do nothing with that many meatball subs piling down on you.

The difference between Polamalu and Tatum is simple: Polamalu's so active and is such a ball hawk, offenses have to at least try to scheme around him; all Tatum ever did was wait on his hits, even if it meant receivers making catches. Tatum's only exceptional skill was jarring the ball out of the receiver's hands. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't. One-dimensional. Polamalu's game is more complete--finishes tackles, lays the stick AND he can cover.

Tatum hit Darryl Stingley with his shoulder causing him to be a quadriplegic for the rest of his life then died of heart disease and pneumonia which was a result of him being quadriplegic.
Tatum also hit a football with his shoulder which resulted with the immaculate reception (biggest fuck up in Raiders history).
He played the game with reckless abandon wildly hitting with an inability read defenses, and to top it off he talked alot of shit and did steroids

Not at the speed this game is played where you can launch your body, helmet first and horizontally like a patriot missle, into another mans head who is perpendicular to the hit and most vulnerable. It sounds like Don Meredith's doing the color commentary here. I know Dandy Don left ABC for a couple of years in the '70's. ABC brought in folks like Alex Karras and Fran Tarkenton for a while in place of Dandy Don. But I totally forgot Meredith spent some time at NBC.
Jack Tatum was one of the most ferocious hitters in NFL history. There's many opposing wide receivers who faced Tatum that can't walk normally cause of Tatum's hits on them.
