My Dad was on the bridge of the USS Trigger (sub) in 1962 10 miles from Bermuda on morning and saw your senerio happen. He saw a whale and a giant squid fighting. He said the squid "arms" were about 30 feet in the air. He said it was about a mile from the sub. He mentioned this story again this morning (12/31/11) hence my search. He's "not" one to exaggerate or embellish. Pretty cool.
