I have never seen someone so biased and pro-Apple like Walter Mossberg (he definitely has a very good track record in sucking up to Apple). But to go to such an extent to claim that Iphone is the first handheld computer is utterly bullshit. Have you ever heard of something called Windows Mobile (released in 2000)? With WM, I can do things that even the current iOS 5 cannot do. For example, I can download whatever I can see on the Internet (music, videos from mediafire, rapidshare)!!

@ironintel no i talk like someone who doesn't take sides. macs and pcs have their ups and downs. macs are very stable and simple to use, but have little to no customization, and cost a bit more for what they have in them. pcs are cheaper and much more customizable, but results on the OS may vary as hardware drivers can sometimes be alittle eh and most pcs come preloaded with a ton of bloatware and proprietary software that they trick you into thinking are needed to work.

Has nothing to do with smarts. If you are harvesting pure processor power for running math and experimental math you would use linux and skip the GUI. If you want word processing, all computers can do that now. If you want games, you need windows. If you want to do any kind of graphics/visual editing Mac provides the best tools for that.

If you are smart, you make use of computers appropriately.

I would not have splashed out on one - I'm not into gadgets for gadgets sake, I'm 54 years old - but my wife gave it to me as a present. Two weeks later you would have had to pry it 'from my cold dead hands'. The fact that it makes phone calls is almost incidental. I just found myself using it is as mobile internet, alarm clock, calculator, notepad, diary/planner,street finder etc because all of these things work so easily and naturally....no clicking around tiny, confusing menus. Try owning it.

The N-Series are smartphones, not PDAs, so they don't come w/the addtional $25/mo fee. My guess is, this is why no American carrier (T-Mobile, AT&T) offers a service plan or even sells these high-end smartphones.

I'm a mobile phone junkie. The iPhone is a nifty device, but Nokia's N-Series seems far superior. They're not as well stylized, but they do a lot more and have been a lot more dependable. Being 'pc-class' doesn't necessarily mean 'better' in a hand held unit. He mentioned Treo and Windows Mobile. I wonder how the iPhone's system stacks up against Symbian operating systems.

I used the N95 8GB. The only thing I miss is multi-tasking which allowed me to have gtalk open in the background. Other than that it's not even close. The symbian OS just isn't as good and not as well integrated. Also, having the 5 MP camera wasn't enough of a plus to outweigh how much better the iPhone operates.

@MattJones1418 I guess it's just different taste. My N82's 5mp & Xenon allows me to leave my dig camera at home. I can take night shots. I can edit/splice video, overlay text & music. I'd have to carry a bulky camera & laptop if I used iPhone. The whole point of a smarthphone for me is multitasking. I can be on the web while editing a video & still have other programs open. The iPhone is more fun, better looking & I love the larger screen but my N82 just does so much more.

@MattJones1418 I didn't say serious editing. It's just that I can edit. I use it to make my videos & I'm able to edit clips together. That's all I need and the iPhone just doesn't do that & has no decent flash.

And, yeah, I can have a web page open in the background & edit a video at the same time. Seriously. There's even a vid about how many apps you can have open on it. /watch?v=9o3d0Y8loHo

I know you can have the apps open, but what's the real point of that. The iphone keeps the history on apps so you come back in to the same state and you're not wasting battery. Like I said, I miss having my gtalk open 24/7, but the user interface is just a million times better than symbian.

@MattJones1418 N82 keeps history as well if I choose to close, but I don't want to close my chat just to enjoy music or edit my documents. iPhone's user interface is definitely better, and it's screen size and appearance. iPhone is well executed, but I'm a features guy who doesn't want to drag a bulky phone with me either. I like my apps open & ready, not just ready when I open them. You just can't do as much with the iPhone.
