LOL. I'm a native Californian. I followed a young woman to Conway in 1990. I was in South Carolina for just 4 months. My young wife began an affair with her boss. I survived a hurricane and a blizzard. I remember the huge bugs, heavy rain, and sickening humidity. I remember having to drive for almost an hour to get to the nearest market, late at night. Now I'm back home in California. I'm more comfortable with the violent crime, earthquakes, fires, floods and ridiculously high cost of living.

Besides, it is unclear whether credit should be due to him or to his staff (in particular his very capable wife).

However, I do think there is merit to your assertion that his successor may not be better. That would be an important consideration.
