  • so its a build in sump with the aquarium? thats cool!

  • I'm running a "veggie fuge" for extra nitrate removal/less filtration devices and it's actually alot of fun to see how it works and where to place what. I have 2x29gal and 2x10 gal, each larger tank is to overflow into the smaller. The video response I posted was just a quick setup to show a forum member what I was begining. Tonight I turned the 10 gal into a "Plenum", where my overflow pipe goes below the substrate (like a reverse undergravel) and then into lower chamber return! Nice sump!

  • You said:

Yippe,a sump has many advatages and although im not using one right now i liked the idea very much and hope to get one working soon. One of the reasons(there are lots of them more) is to hide the equipment(calcium reactors, refugiums and protein skimmers to name just a few)

With freshwater you don't have there do you?

  • People don't seem to like this but I find it to be a very creative DIY project. It's something different. I'd like to have this sump/tank thing built myself.

  • I was wondering why you had fish in your sump. But then I realized, This is your aquarium!!

  • ynh954,this is not my tank, this is a 40 gallon tank i used as a sump to filter the water for my main 100 gallon tank i have above, the fish i have here are only waiting for a friend of mine to get some space in his tank for them, they will be a lot easyer to catch here than in the main tank :)

  • interesting experiment you have going on.

  • vert unatractive.

  • looks like a mess

  • I agree, looks way too messy and complicated for something that should be pretty simple.

If i were you, I'd breed guppies in the bottom and use the fry for live food in my main tank.

  • Can you eplain to me how its not common to see a fresh water set up with a sump?

  • Yippe,a sump has many advatages and although im not using one right now i liked the idea very much and hope to get one working soon. One of the reasons(there are lots of them more) is to hide the equipment(calcium reactors, refugiums and protein skimmers to name just a few)and maybe for that reason its not very common to see a freshwater setup with a sump because there is no need to use that equipment.

  • maybe its different where your from then, because im in australia and pretty much every large fresh water tank comes with a sump. Unless you option not too when you buy it. Ive been keeping fish for 11 years now and its rarer to see a fresh water tank without a sump.

  • my advice would be research the fish info first before u buy it so tat u will not ending up with fishes fighting in ur tank...spend ur money wisely :p

  • paul, what pump are u using and how good it is

  • dude what a waste u got a tiny little tANK..

  • cheese0rdie,the tank that i made in the sump has aproximately 15 gallons and i have seen tanks smaller but the sump was filtering water for a 100 gallon tank (main tank)and i know its not the biggest tank i have ever seen but i would not say that a 100 gallon is "tiny little tank"

  • im about to build my own sump.since the aftermarket sumps are so expensive.with the sump ur having right now compare to the filsta XP that u used to have, which is better? the only problem im afraid of is overflowing the main tank.because in my area power goes out more often than the other places

  • integragsr5 ,if you have problems with power, you will end up having problems with either the external filter or the sump, one of the things i liked about the sump i built was the fact that i could put about 3 times the media i used to have in my rena xp3 and use one or two or more pumps to have the flowrate i wanted. How many gallons is your tank?

  • 36 gallon and i have an extra 10 gallon tank which i might as well use it as a sump.anyways my daddy is planning to build a pond.small fish will be in that 36 gallon tank and big fish will be in the pond.

  • integragsr5,you are absolutely right in finding my reason :)but you just miss one little bit of my problem,my tank was overstocked AND they fighted alot :((

  • y do u put the fish in ur sump for. any benefits?.u got the most messy sump i've ever seen so far.5 star for the most messy sump

  • hi integragsr5,im not the only person who has fish in the sump and, basically, the benefits are, those fish stay alive longer!i built that sump with a special section to be able to house some fish that by some reason dont work so good in the main tank,i might have more fish there just because i have more problematic fish :(

  • now it looks like u got alot of problems.overstocked or they fight alot ?
