  • i just got a parlor guitar the other day and i love it. but some one told me you cant put steel strings on it. so i got nylon strings and i'm not a very big fan of them but now seeing you with steel strings on a guitar older than mine i was wondering if it was okay to use steel strings? please do reply. i cant stand the feel of these nylons

  • @BeforeTheSkyFalls

These were made for gut strings way back. There's no problem to go with steel strings today. I use 0.10's on all my vintage parlors set up for standard tuning!

  • @BottleneckJohn thanks but one more question. i think mine might be a classical guitar..would it still be alright to use extra light strings?

  • @BeforeTheSkyFalls

If it's a parlor like this one, go for it! If it's a spanish type classical, keep the nylon strings..

  • Nice!

  • Tale it would tell? Seems that's what this video is about. What dry and dusty lyrics. Great texture.

  • Simply put.... VERY NICE!

  • man, i would kill for this guitar

  • Ladder braced, right? Nuther nice one!

  • That's awesome, nice playing! Sounds almost like a resonator in some parts, an excellent tone for an old guitar.

  • nice sounding guitar pulls something out of you doesnt it

  • @kaptainbastard

    It does..

  • Sounds Great !! If you don't mind may I ask what brand and gauge strings you are using?

  • Looks like it might be an old Martin.

  • robert johnson called.. he wants his guitar back!!!

  • @WhyGangRecords

Hehe.. I'll bring it to the crossroads!

  • @BottleneckJohn *Head desk*

  • @BottleneckJohn He's too busy trying to flag a ride.

    lol

  • Brother, you have got some of the coolest guitars I've ever seen, and you make'm all sing...

  • @connberkshire

    THANKS!

  • Whats your tuning?

  • @patrickstep

Vestapol. Can't remember what key though!

  • @BottleneckJohn open D

  • @patrickstep open D DADF#AD

  • Awsome!

  • That thing sounds incredible...nice find indeed.

  • @000deadcalm000

It sure does, thanks for the comment!

  • It's not the guitar. It's the player. This guy would play anything and it would sound good. It takes a long time to get that good with the slide.

  • You can't buy that kind of mojo in a new guitar these days.

  • @gamewizard

    I agree..

  • @gamewizard How come?

  • @UtzChips2009

Because they don't build the same way from the same materials. Everything is an endangered species now and illegal to harvest, or aren't you keeping up with the news about the Gibson raid?

  • @UtzChips2009

Also, tonewoods get better with age. You can't get 100 year old tone in a guitar made from newly harvested wood.

  • What tuning ?

  • It's both guitar and player. Good combo here. I found an old Kay upright bass in a dumpbox, glued up delaminating front & back, broken neck block--replaced tone posts, strung nylon strings, & it sounds great. Since I'm not really a bass player, it doesn't sound as good as this with me playing it. Great job, Thanks for posting.

  • Awesome soul in that one man and GREAT hands!

  • @xr650r01

    Thank you!!!

  • PLEASE!!!! another vid of this one PLEASEEEEE

  • @heymynameistyler

Sounds like a good idea!! I will make it happen.. :-)

  • normaly old guitars have a good sound.

  • Sweet.

  • It is not the guitar, its the guitarist. Sounds like a living legend. Nice guitar!

  • @phoshilaaron

    That's a great comment, LoL!! I still say it's the guitar.. :-)

    Thanks a lot!!

  • The vibe is palpable to say the least!!

  • could you do another video with this bad boy just no slide?

  • Wow, just wow.

  • What an astonishing sound. Nice playing too!

  • That guitar has a lot of character it appears. The sound has so much behind it, very full and "I'l bring you way back". Gives me a picture of a traditional wandering mountain man.

  • Sounds like a "sell your soul" guitar. FANTASTIC!!!

  • @drdhdc00

    Hehe, I agree..

  • I got moist listening to this.

  • Wow, sounds like a cannon! The tone is so rich and beautiful, the acoustics are fantastic, and it really packs a punch! When it comes to quality of instruments, I'd take old, wise, and articulate sounding any day over young, inexperienced, and prattle sounding. Great job on rescuing a unique old guitar!!!

  • I've got a question about your guitar's construction. Does your guitar have a scref to regulation of the neck? I'm going to buy a parlour guitar but ih hasn't got any regulation of neck. There are no strings and I am not sure what is the string's height over the 12th fret. That would be grateful if you write me some details of the cornstruction. What is the neck width? 1 3/4" or 1 11/16?

  • vart fan hittar du de här gitarrerna FlaskhalsJohn? :O

    du är ju mäktigast

  • Well done , i like it while its so deep , the real BLUES feeling well....feeling blue,

thx for give this fine tune..........gently greatings

  • That thing can't be European. It sounds like it was born in the middle of a Mississippi cotton field in August!

    Dang! That sounds nice!!!

  • OK...that guitar has a voice......it's almost scary....

  • @PeluMaad

    Yeah... I feel that too!

  • @BottleneckJohn they do say that really old guitars(parlors as this some as old as 19th century romantic era made referred to as romantic guitars) play way better with the age

  • @PeluMaad I get the feeling the previous owners are still living inside it.

  • @TheMatureAmerican

I get that feeling too, somehow age and "experience" lingers on...

  • @BottleneckJohn -Now I HAVE to put on "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" This must be the guitar played in that movie. Ha.

  • who the fuck would throw something like that away? dickheads.

  • It's the beat up ness that makes it so awesome. I love these little diamonds in the rough.

  • Sweet baby jesus. Where did you find this thing? I wish I could FIND guitars. Lol. And yes, I look, I haul scrap metal, and have never found a guitar in with all the steel yet.

  • Oh my god, that is the most beautiful instrument I have seen in a long, long time. Thank you for sharing!

  • @IJeskeI

Haha, we're much alike then!!! I love this one too!!! It's cool to see something beautiful in an instruments that so many people would find very ugly(and want a new guitar instead..)

    Thanks for the comment!!!

  • Them people's r loving them blues!!!

  • ThAt GUITAR has lived a more interesting life than most peoplE

  • @JEDIALADDIN

Hehe.. And it's still around to tell the story!! I'm glad I could save it...

  • @BottleneckJohn Now you have that guitar ready for it's NEXT 100 years :)

  • the feelings and emotion drip off of this amazing! :)

  • @freakoutXtreme

I agree, it sure has the feeling built into it.. Cool tone!!

  • What is the thing on your finger, and great playing too.

  • Thanks! And it's a bottleneck on my finger, to play slide guitar stuff..

  • @BottleneckJohn Thanks I was wondering for the longest time what it was.

  • damn how do you get these guitars everywhere i look for them there around 1000 dollars or more unrestored

which is crasy cause i know back in the good old days they were incredibly cheap

  • Over here in Sweden these cost from 15 dollars to $200.. Never ever more, they're everywhere to be found!!!! Sold in thousands from 1880 to the 1920's..

And on eBay they(repair projects)can be easily found for less than $100, good luck, bro!!

  • @BottleneckJohn do you know what to put in the search for ebay because when i looked last time there was only 1 unrestored for 1500

  • ur playing is so insane!!! 5/5!!!!

  • LoL!! Thanks a lot, Ralph!!!!

  • That guitar is amazing. i hope I find 'my' one soon

  • Don't you just love breathing life back into an old guitar? It's like raisin' the dead!

  • Yes!!

I love the moment when you hear an instrument for the first time after it's been silent for like 50 years or more..

    It's a good thing!!!

  • Oh I wish they could talk, but man you make this one sing! Love that rich tonality that it belts out! Thanks for sharing..

    Great find!

    ~Ian

  • What brand and year is this guitar? Do ya know?

  • No, I don't know that..

  • well you still play pretty fricken awesome!

  • Thanks!!! :-)

  • that guitar can talk.

  • @deadheadman66

    It sure can, thanks!!

  • @BottleneckJohn Is that good old open D tuning for slide and blues? You sure do it well....thanks :)

  • sounds beautiful

  • Wow that guitar sounds great! My grandfather found a '59 Gibson Les Paul burst in his attic! Sadly he passed away, and passed it on to me. I have played it alot! Great condition to just a little gouge on the headstock.

  • tight! nice playing there honestly i wouldn't do a thing to that guitar, just leave it the way it is all nice and worn in ;)

  • I love it the way it is, so it'll be kept this way, bro!!

  • thats a real blues guitar its looks poor and scrathy but when an experiensed guitar player picks the guitar up it sounds beautiful as hell. you cant get better feeling from a guitar.

so i guess im heading for the dump tomorrow to see if i can bring a guitar back to life XD

btw my guitar slide was in glas and i smashed it XD

    just fun XD

  • I agree with you on that you don't need fancy stuff to play some blues.. LoL!!

Most things with at least a couple of strings can work well!!! :-)

    THANKS for your comments!!!

Good luck finding your own dumpster guitar!!!!!!

  • i actually found one at home that needed fixing.

and now it sounds good :P

still the notes on the higher frets does't sound the best but works fine :P
