  • Jonathan I hate to say it but you sound uneducated and lack intelligence

  • 'i've come to love this thing' ... 'these things get to you after a while' god he makes the best calls hahaha

  • Keating did roast'em good didn't he. ;)

  • paul keating was a terrible politician who cause an awful recession but dam he made politics interesting

  • @jonathan45278 You know absolutely fuckall about Australian politics. Do some research on the initiatives he introduced you total fucking retard.

  • Comment removed

  • @jonathan45278 this is probably one of the stupidest comments i have ever heard

you are a true intellectual nobody

  • @jonathan45278

People like you should be disconnected from the internet.

  • @jonathan45278 The Australian recession in the early 90's was caused by the United States you dolt!

  • Gillard needs Keating to come and lay the smack down for her.

  • I'm nostalgic 4 those days

  • Comment removed

  • I was 4 back then, thought Id share that

  • @MamaMario13 Australia was a better place .

  • As much damage as he made to the country, he was entertaining as heel to watch

  • @ilsy74 wat damage? his economic reforms changed the whole landscape of the country dont be fooled by the fact we were in recession, so was the rest of the world.

  • @raff23 I am a quiet discerning person and I chose my words carefully. The reforms he made will impact us until the world will end.

  • @ilsy74 and? That his reforms will last does not explain how they are damaging.

  • @emangi1 I presume you are asking me the question? Well Keating made our economics tied in to the global financial syste, so much, it made us more reliant on it. And therefore we are in dire straights when things happen here at home of course (like the recent floods) but also when things go wrong on the international stage. We have lost a part of our sovereignty with Keatinomics.

  • @ilsy74 only someone who doesn't understand the pre-1980s banking system could say that. The isolated oligarchical system we had running was highly protectionist and moribund. Opening up the international floodgate led us into the growth that we took for granted in the 1990s/early 2000s. Our problematic reliance on the international system is only due to our external account deficit which was allowed to increase under the coalition's watch.

  • @ilsy74 That's the price you pay for global trade.

How many countries aren't tied into it apart from North Korea?

Didn't Australia ride out the global downturn without going into recession?

  • I LOVE this guy - and the best thing is about watching these clips: both sides are so involved, - laughing, shouting out, answering back. It was a lively, exciting time.

  • And to think this bloke was our PM......

  • go paul go

  • Those few pages Keating was holding up at the end is still more policy than what Abbott and the Libs have today.

  • @bongo155 LOL, at least Hewson had a policy, Abbot has nothing but opposed to everything.

  • A complete legend. Bring him back!

  • HAHA! He fucking shredded the cunts! I'm not even Australian and I loved watching him in action in the Ozzie parliament!

  • ...and the most courageous, insightful and innovative!

  • liberal rule that's what keating tried to stop and after 11 yrs under lazarus the right wing conservatives ruled with an iron fist at the expense of ordinary working people like julius caesar did with the roman empire $22 billion surplus and yet not once they helped the poor people in this nation look so much money it looks good in the treasury the pensioners struggle to make ends meat and lazarus just said i feel the pain for the aussie battler but the rich need more money let's help the greedy

  • @luneco100 exactly- what is a surplus? money left over, AFTER costings- a PROFIT. Now, what is the role of government? to supply services with tax payers money, not squabble it all away in overseas accounts. Sure, some needs to be kept for a rainy day- but not 22 BILLION dollars. Our infrastructure is finally being repaired after 11 years of neglect.

  • @luneco100 and the so-called 'Labour' party decided to make things even more expensive with useless taxes like a 'carbon tax' whose goal is to make life so unaffordable that even electricity becomes a luxury for only the rich and well-off.

  • @grassfell I do not think that the Carbon Tax is useless and its purpose is to make life unaffordable. The purpose of this tax is to leach money off the people who are using electricity made from carbon producing plants such as coal, and to use that money for the benefit for the people. But I can see what point you are trying to create- Why does the Government have to keep taxing especially when they have enough taxing like tabacco, alcohol, etc.

  • paul keating will be missed as today our politicians are like robots quick get the remote change the batteries

  • i normally vote liberal but if paul keating ran i would vote for him

  • I appreciate the disillusionment many express about the decline in the quality of our political leadership. Labor in NSW, in particular, has decended into theatre absurdis. We have had it all from MPs running through parliament in their y-fronts, members fugging old matrons on dance floors, punch ups, etc. One expects Samuel Becket to emerge from the shadows at some stage to explain how such a curous, indecipherable plot is really an obtuse examination of the futility of life in general.

  • Entertaining that's for sure. Sheer brilliance. Paul Keating, best pm and treasurer!

  • Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan need to watch this clip and clips like it very carefully! This is how you do Question Time!

  • TEACH JULIA OR SOMEONE ELSE IN LABOR THE WAYS OF DEBATING LIKE A MASTER

  • FUUCK........this guy was good.

  • the best that was in politics is gone now we have madmonks bishops hockeys and idiots trying to run this country you look back at frogmouth howard and think how on earth the aussies voted for that little frog as pm for 11 yrs he destroyed workers rights that still exist to the day with the abcc and workchoices lite under labor its sad to see that the lnp is only good to screw workers and feed the wealthy when are all u people going to realize that poor rich bastards rot in hell with howard

  • @luneco100 the Labor party is full of career politicians who haven't done a day's physical labour in their life. The Liberal party works because it's honest with itself. Labour has no values and no direction. Read Latham's Diaries, the writing's been on the wall for over a decade.

  • @grassfell Your statements are not actually all that accurate. Haven't you heard that all politicians lie? Well pretty much everything politics is lies and what-nots which create misunderstanding with the population. There's all these people who say Paul Keating is a great pm, and their reasons are inadequate in the perspective of how he helped the people. Their reasons are ridiculous to the point of saying that his got all the brains in parliament and "his a good bloke" I disagree.

  • @grassfell And it is also linked to those people in other parts of the world who are brainwashed and are not open-minded. Like these people who say communism is bad and do not put adequate reasons. They all say: look at what stalin did. Look at North Korea. Well in fact USA had more troubles with their unfair democracy and their mistrials of african americans. And the ridiculous jim crow laws. No one bitches about the past on usa's system except communism which is left wing.

  • @grassfell Implying Tony Abbott is not a career politician. He didn't exactly object to his recent 33% pay rise, did he? It seems that Tony might have felt a bit hypocritical or embarrassed about going on the doll, so he became a politician. What else would he be doing? Priesthood? Well at least then he would still escape taxes.

  • bring keating back...

how stupid were the people that voted for that bald, menzies flashing eyebrow, lisp stuttering bumbling bastard howard??

  • FFS take up a job a Julia's mentor.

  • One of the best laughs i've had in ages!!

  • Where do I get my copy?

  • HAHAHAHHAa at a labour party conference in 63 i loled, Keating you GUN

  • He was the best, you scumbags, you scumbags !

  • Downer was scared of Keating

  • Best Australian Politician of all time.

  • I wonder what Keating's opinion on this stupid planed internet filter is.

  • 1:24 looks like Keating is lecturing the coalition on their ineptitude. What I do like about videos from this era is that both sides were far more animated, and the leaders weren't afraid to tear into the other side.

  • keating sent australia bankrupt

  • @666satansnumber From your profile "Books: ew no". And you vote Liberal. God I'm shocked. SHOCKED I say. Some dumb bogan who doesn't read and has no idea what he's talking about (Australia never defaulted on debt payments while Keatings was treasurer/PM) supports the Libs over Labor.

  • @666satansnumber No, Keating put forward economic policies and reforms which caused short-term pain during his time, but provided economic stability and growth in the long term. Unfortunately, most people don't have the understanding of economics to truly appreciate what he did.

  • @bakadazcha Keating was good. But gotta also say that Australia, being an English speaking, resource wealthy country at the dawn of the 90s when 'Globalization-Californication, end of the Soviet empire, Iraq bashed, US affirmed - was very, very fortunately placed for a cash windfall. Even if the mines were foreign owned etc. Early 90s Australia was so ready to light up like a Birthday Cake, all we needed was a steady hand with a match. I'm glad Keating was there

  • This is what you call a firebrand. Now juxtapose resident nutter Tony Abbott; oh boy what a difference.

  • Oh god. Downer never stood a chance.

Can we bring him back to vanquish Abbot?

  • Keating is absolutely brilliant.

Now there's a PM I can get behind.

  • @sophilianate dunno if id get behind him, sexual connotations aside he was indeed a brilliant prime minister.

  • There's something about a politician who can make comments that stab the opposition through the heart while making everyone laugh. Brilliant stuff. Keating was undermined by the Murdoch media, who maliciously painted him as an elitist (French clocks, Italian suits, etc.) who had no common ground with ordinary Australians.

  • I could watch these all day

  • Keating called it ACME Fightback as he saw himself as the Road Runner and Hewson and the rest of the Liberal Party as Wile E Coyote who used products from the ACME company which always failed his objective. Another classic example of the psychological ascendancy Keating was able to gain in Question Time over his opponents.

  • He was so entertaining in politics.

  • Thanks Paul for all that you were

    what a legend

  • Look at fat mummy boy Downer gagging on his silver spoon,i bet he was relieved when he lost the leadership of that rabble,PK used to tear strips of him,Downer used to go so red in the face PK thought he was having a heart attck. Remember when PK said to him"oh so Alexander believes only rich ppl should live in big houses" The way he would say "Alexander" in a tone that was dripping with sarcasm and wit was the best i'd ever seen from any politician

  • PS: When Keating ripped into the opposition, its the fact that his barbs had real honest substance that gave his quips their potency. Who can we say that of today?

  • Paul Keating: Much more well understood and beloved by the Australian people today than he was back then. Paul Keating might not want to come back but we need a Prime Minister with a razor sharp mind like Keating today.

  • man oh man he knew how to use a prop. unlike our stuffy boring politicians of today. knew it so well

  • Love Keating a great leader and Treasurer, just misunderstood...

  • Costello truly looks like a gremlin sitting in the background in this one

  • I never missed watching parliament when keating was there,!

Costello tried his best to be his carbon copy !

Keating were still here waiting for your return!

  • as much as i dont like the man, i must say...he is good.

  • Now I know the British House of Commons enjoys a bit of banter, but this amount of constant interruption is a disgrace and should never be allowed.

There is no order at all in your chamber, even when the speaker appeals for it.

  • It's good hey? Makes it interesting. More interesting than football that's for sure.

  • Definitely way better than football! That's what makes Parliament so much fun in Australia.

    Paul Keating is a legend!

  • You are

  • @feliciter84 Your joking right? how can you denigrate this, Australia still is a social lab, most of the best ideas of doing things come from here - their parliamentary sessions being one of them - most Aussies seem to care and interact with this, particularly when this guy was around. No doubt about it he was a colossus! imagine him in the Uk as labo(u)r leader - he'd mop up!

  • @gray499kcw

Keating was a giant. An intellectual, a wit, a great communicator. And I agree with his politics.

What I can't bear - and most of the clips of the House on here seem to display it - is the constant shouting over the person making a speech. That and the total disregard for the chair.

I want to hear what Keating is saying, and then let the other guys have their go.

  • @feliciter84 fair enough ! But its Australia - that's their "idiot sons of the aristrocrary" baying and wooping there! the Tories here were the same when Brown, Blair, Kinnock, Foot and callaghan were in the chair, the right wing (All) press were even worse

  • @feliciter84 You must absolutely hate sophie mirabella then, who is useless and i don't know whether she actually ever asks questions. Sadly, this is what question time is these days

  • @feliciter84 Ah but Keating reveled in it. ;)

  • Bring back Acme fightback!

  • Why do people blame governments for recessions, when it is a well known fact that cycles of boom and bust are inherrent to capitalism?

  • Because governments play a key role in the economy. they, and the RBA, put in place monetary and fiscal policies

  • @StrayGator

Bugger off. You get ups and downs whatever the system. The only way to avoid them is to hold the environment in stasis, which isn't possible.

If nothing else, you get gluts/doughts of natural resources.

  • what you forget is government policy varies the level of boom and bust. Governments also decide on debt levels and that can have an effect as well.

Are you trying to claim that policy makes no difference?

  • Acme Fightback policy......Love it!!

  • Come back and make politics interesting again Paul

  • @geekaboy Yeah he was great but as usual the dick headed masses mistook brilliance for arrogance.

  • @geekaboy HEAR HEAR!!

  • @geekaboy HEAR HEAR!!

  • love the suit

  • lol

  • What's that supposed to mean? Have a look around, all the straight guys have now decided to wear fashion inspired by gay men.

  • Love this guy.......

  • He is the best...

  • He's the best - should have been a comedian.

  • Made parlament watchable.

  • that's a really nice suit...no joke.

  • a man of substance and conviction. admired my me

  • dude, they were politicians so what did you expect

  • Keating was a god. We were once led by true alpha males, now we have nerds like Rudd and Howard.

  • I could watch this stuff all day.

  • Comment removed

  • God I miss this.

  • "Oh yes I saw it... at a Labor Party conference in 1963"

    lol! Keating is the bomb.

  • How on gods earth the liberals expected to ever take on Keating in a debate........

He was too smooth too smart and above all a great leader.............................a legend!

  • the most effective parliamentarian in our country's history.

  • His work as Treasurer can never be disputed in what it brought to this country, a man ahead of his time. His best years were well behind him when he became PM. In the end, his arrogance turned to hubris and he lost his grip on reality, becoming hated and irrelevant. If only we had more leaders like him now (unlike Kevin the p*ssant).

  • @nyjetf18 Keating should be bestowed "The Australian Legend, Legend, Deadset Legend Award". Our greatest Prime Minister bar none!

  • I wonder will the same issues get a run at the 2009 Lib Federal conference seeing we now have the following:

    1. A conservative gov in WA

    2. The Libs are in opposition

  • John Howard's expression at 1:57

    Classic! : ))

  • Keating,a Jedi Master he is.

  • Keating fantastic! 10/10

  • That would be why his electorate gave him such a dignified exit from federal politics?

  • still - he didn't lose his fucking seat to an abc journo... ROFL.

  • The Australian Labor Party - Communists? Have you gone troppo?

  • oh ur a legend lol

  • Don't even joke about that.

  • Keating won with little policy in 1993, Howard wins 1996 with virtually no policy. Don't blame political parties, don't blame politicians, blame the electrate that listens to rubbish shows like "Today Tonight" or "ACA". The Electrate will vote on fear everytime. Its the electrate that is gutless.

  • Gold. Politics has never been as entertaining since Keating left.

  • Keating was untouchable. Classic stuff

  • Classic Keating moment.

  • kev07 forever nuff said

  • Jack Lang is a interesting study . i hope you guys study him more eanresstly an intersetting man i saw it indiffedently he was nice communicating very hard

  • All of this crap about who was the best Prime Minister and Opposition Leader, even the best party, is overshadowing the purpose of this video.

Whether you're for or against Keating, his theatrics in Parliament were one of a kind. They brought interest from the public into politics. They were well thought through (and dare I say) choreographed.

But most importantly, they were *humerous*. They were funny. He was/is a funny man, and a politician with a sense of humour. It's fantastic!

  • the most bitter bloke is hawkie cuz keating spliced him and that's why i hate this prick

  • armani suits italian clocks a great aussie + k*** fightbacck was a good document good bloke sad they met at the same time

  • now imagine if he had gotten his way and had 15% super introduced, the whole pensioners problem would be eradicated in no time.

  • RUDD'S A DUDD

  • The last great Australian politician. Since then shadows and emptiness. Vision plus rhetorical authority rather than managerial grey men. And Howard. What a reactionary bitter man he was. Keating dragged us kicking and screaming into a proud Australia and Howard reminded what motives ought to make us ashamed of ourselves

  • Keating was great. But correctness disease flourished under him. He didn't have the followers he needed.

  • didn't he do a great job in terminating Hawkie's career

  • In retrospect, and I am saying this as a self-confessed Keating lover, Fightback had many good things going for it, some might say it was far ahead of its time. Fact was, Hewson was a genius in economics who actually had a vision for the country (unlike any Liberal leader since). Australia had its finest day when Hewson and Keating led the two major parties.

Still, Keating was a master debater. "I've come to love this thing" is a classic.

  • When Keating was speaking, Parliament House was his and oly his arena. No one could touch him.

  • Paul Keating is the greatest Prime Minister Australia has ever had.

  • here,here--

  • thats in your opinion and in my opinion- his the worst

  • "Ive come to love this thing" - Classic

  • What was acme fightback?

  • A policy instituted by the Liberal Party in the lead-up to the 1993 election. Keating demolished it.

  • It was actually a decent blueprint, something like eighty percent it's content have since been implemented by Howard/Keating/Rudd since, but it was politically stupid, you release such a comprehensive, long term plan and your overall result will ofcourse look radical, which Keating fed off. Something interested fightback was that it had a plan to reduce carbon emisions by 35% come 2000, which would have effectivley meant they were 200% less than they actually were in 2000.

  • "I saw it...at a Labor party conference in 1963." Haha so true

  • love him or hate him the man was a great speaker

  • i love this, youtube is a forum for all to voive their opinion, i also love keating..lol

  • After 11 years what was the Howard Govnments social policy?

  • Interest rates under Fraser with John Howard as treasurer peaked at 22% - 4% higher than at any time under a Labor government.

  • That's because mortgage rates were fixed you tool. The Cash rate was 22%

  • indeed sir they were capped, Keating copped the large mortgage rates due to the deregulation which was one of the greatest reforms along with the float this country has ever done.

  • one of the first things keating did was float the dollar. that was in 1983. who come it took 7 years before we got such an awful recession? keating didnt do anything to help us out there.

  • Not to mention 12% unemployment - officially.
