  • @jmmypaddy

That's very funny. Funnier still, mind, is Windsor Davies' performance in this song.

  • Magnificent! It Ain't Half Hot Mum has long been a favourite comedy of mine. I was 8 at the time of this and Windsor and Don were two of my heroes. What a fantastic voice Don had, he could teach all the so called singers today a thing or two about pure vocal talent. Windsor Davies always makes me laugh and I think this is the finest celebrity record there has ever been.I was delighted when this appeared on the DVD boxset as an extra.

Rest in Peace Don. Your voice was simply fantastic.

  • Positively, comparatively, superlatively and brilliantly performed classic singing and comedy. 100% set piece for budding comedians to emulate. Thanks for posting this wonderful "Whispering Grass" rendition.

  • Windsor has some amazing expressions, don had the most amazing voice, todays young singers could learn alot from this little gentleman, but don't tell the grass! Absoloutely great.

  • What a beautiful voice,very emotional.

  • lived in fairlight just around the corner from don estelle when i was a young lad over 30 years ago we had a afghan hound dog and it use to escape from us to go and shag his afghan. i was about 8 or 9 a thought it funny that we were the same height.

  • Don's voice is amazing. Such talent. It's a pity that our retarded generation of kids will never appreciate such talent.

Sadly they are to busy listening to that little dick wad Justine Beever

  • I always remember that Don Estelle had a strong voice but I never realised how funny Windsor Davies was in both this performance & the series, in general. Indeed, looking back, it was corny, not PC, but very, very, funny quite often.

  • Many young men of bomber command flew out never to come home with this song in their heads it was by the ink spots . this is a great version though.

  • Bloody hell, this takes me back, I was only 8 years old. What a voice Don Estelle had.

  • @TheDiddlysquat If they bring it back then they'll only go and make a US version.

  • thanks skitchcraig thought they'd both gone ! whoops !

  • classic !!!! both sadly missed R.I.P. X

  • @chubbs4292 Windsor Davies is still alive. He's 80 years old. Great performance here tho.

  • Great voices, great chracters, great comedy! But the little guy Don Estelle has a voice of a opera singer, great stuff!

  • Still a classic

  • @TheDiddlysquat Actually I think they both have fantastic voices, especially the little guy.

Was this an early airband show??

  • Windsor looks like Captain Price from Call of Duty lol.

  • Tell the difference between that turkey and noel edmonds.

  • so many happy memories come flooding back when i hear this song, awesome vocals :-)

  • Don has one of them voices, fly through an X-Factor audition and then get shafted for being short or something..Fantastic Voice..Windsor Davies is just unique in himself imo.

  • Don Estelle has a very melodious voice. Windsor Davies makes me laugh, especially when he is doing backing vocals from 1;31.

  • loved the series, very funny!!! don estelle, windsor davies, fantastic, dont make them like that anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Don Estelle was pure class, Windsor Davies ? what does he do? another showbizz

nobody who makes money out of other peoples talent.

  • @6slgmorris Maybe you'll change your mind about Windsor Davies's talent, if you'll watch "it aint Half Hot Mum". He's fantastic.

  • @6slgmorris give him a break he was a co-star

  • watched all the IAHHM as a child, loved everyone, brill voice, thanks for the post :)

  • What a beautiful song but who the hell are these guys?

  • @alshouse The taller gentleman is Windsor Davies, the shorter one Don Estelle. Both starred in a Jimmy Perry/ David Croft situation comedy entitled "It Ain't 'Alf Hot Mum" which ran from 1973 until 1981 here in the U.K. This song is called Whispering Grass and was Number One in June 1975 here in the U.K.

  • Many happy memories come flooding back....thanks for posting

  • Don Estelle was HUGE!!!! And Windsor Davies is sooo funny!

  • One of the more memorable hits of 1975 and many more there were too!

  • Just relived TOTPs Xmas '75 what a great year that was for music. Nice post..thanx

  • I love this. Don Estelle is a little man with a huge voice, such a lovely tone and Windsor Davis was born to play that role....shutttuppppp!

  • If you notice, much of Windsor Davies career was playing Sergeant Majors. Even when he voiced for Terrahawks he voiced Sergeant Major Zero, one of the Zeroids. He had the perfect voice, mannerism, facial expressions, everything to play a strong, no nonsense sergeant major with little tolerance for foolishness in the ranks. I saw him in one recently with Jim Dale, Geoffrey Hughes, and Arthur Lowe that left me in stitches.

  • 1975 was certainly a quirky year for the UK charts. It was Post-Glam and Pre-Punk, sort of no-man's land. Telly Savalas, Laurel and Hardy, Billy Connelly, the re-release of 1969's Space Oddity, the 1968 country song Stand By Your Man, and topping them all is this one from Windsor and Don. Bizarre. And thanks for posting it!
