I have been near the Salton Sea....I could smell death in the wind miles before we arrived to our destination. You only live once! DO NOT swim in the water!!!!!
we did a dip in the sea after a couple of drinks for a friends 40th birthday. We'll never forget that birthday. Dec 30th, 2008, cold and it was almost midnight when we did it.
dude your probably going to die bro dont you ever swim in the salton sea ever again did you kown that river that feeds that lake is the most polluted river in the states because it comes from the big city of mexicali mexico its popullation is close to a million inhabitants
Nope. More mis information. It is perfectly suited for swimming, according to the US Department of the interior and several years worth of environmental studies.
@88super50notchback Actually only 12% of the sea's inflow comes from Mexicali via the New River, and by the time it makes it way to the Salton Sea, it has been diluted and has undergone natural treatment to the point that it is not considered the major safety hazard. Most of the pollution comes from pesticide runoffs and selenium. Pollution in the Great Lakes is way worse. We've been dumping chemicals in those lakes well before the Salton Sea was even formed, which occurred between 1905-1907.
aww, I was supposed to go =( From pictures, I know the places are abandoned, but is it true that the shore is littered with dead fishes? (This I got this one off from Weird US -_-;) Any ways, it's nice to see the sea is not too heavily toxic...
You obviously are very ill-informed. Do a little research first. The water is VERY saline but is NOT toxic and is NOT full of sewage. Its misinformation like that that keeps people away from the area.
Well isn't the New River toxic? From what I remember its connected with the Salton Sea. You are right about the high salinity but I think that the New River also affects the Salton Sea. Or am I wrong?
Ok, I already did my research. I wrote 2 essays on the New River, and sorry to say but YOU ARE MISINFORMED. I was there in May 2008 and that river is still severely toxic. It HAS FOAM!!! There is only one water treatment facility in Mexicali called Las Arenitas, which still hasn't fixed the problem. There are still private citizens (corporations) dumping waste into the water which undermines Las Arenitas
In addition, when I talked to the New River Committee in Calexico, they say it is still dirty and the water that is "treated" has only decreased less than 30% of the toxins in the New River.
From US Bureau of Reclamations Salton Sea web pages:
"At the international boundary, the New River's flow consists mainly of partially treated and raw sewage, agricultural drainage water, and powerplant effluent. It also contains detergents, pesticides, and other...chemicals. However, by the time the River reaches the Sea, the water quality is improved through natural cleansing that occurs in the intervening 50 miles."
The US bureau? Its run by the same govt. that said treating the New River and Salton Sea would be a "porkbarrel project". I wouldn't trust those sources. The New River Committee is a civilian run group which is asembled by Calexico residents. Plus I doubt "natural cleansing" is enough to get the uranium and arsenic out
have you ever heard of the New River? I have done extensive essays regarding the New River. It connects with the Salton Sea and yes not a lot of the actual filth gets to the Salton Sea but about 10% does which does not improve conditions. The New River is known to be the most polluted river in the Americas, but if you still think I am full of shit why don't you go investigate for yourself. Go to CESPM, or the Calexico New River Committee, see if I am still full of shit.
The river is mainly the colorado river. It changes through time. The run off is from Agriculture run offs which is full of pesticide and phosphors. These organics helps algae grow and uses much more oxygen than it produces. It stinks...If it does have shit...it's coming from Mexico probably...and URANIUM? Come on...Probably the same amount as any other rivers...Cite your source as to Uranium contents and compare to other data.
My source is the Calexico New River Committee. Uranium isn't the only thing it has. It also has arsenic and cyanide. The fecal matter in the river IS coming from Mexico. Check out the New River committee website. In addition to all this the water treatment plant in Mexico is transporting the problem to the Hardy River in Mexico.

Actually it is. The Salton Sea also has 2 rivers the New and Colorado River. The New River is severely toxic. It has uranium and a lot of human shit.

It WAS a major problem but lots of effort has been put in to improve the quality of the new river, the US even built treatment plants in mexico.

oh WAS. Oh damn. I have a research paper to do on this. Do you know how long ago was this?
