  • Great rendition of a great Motown classic!

  • The best version ever no contest !!!

  • Awsome

  • I Never heard of Joan Until The Shadow of Motown Movie , where she sings this song !! She's GREAT , She's Beautiful , What a Sweetheart , WHAT a Band ,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Such a beautiful voice you GO GIRL!

  • Joan moves me each and ever time I hear her, this song is so beautiful, I never knew that it would one day be my story.......I miss Alison so..........

  • Who plays bass on this performance?

  • @whiskywineandbeer Bob Babbitt, the bassist for the latter half of the Motown era.

  • @DickyHertz Thanks.for that.

  • Joan Osborne is great. Like all the others who worked together with the faboulus Funk Brothers. Unbelivable this sound from Detroit.

  • Let them do, what ever, this wan't go way, because its pure class.

  • Anybody who likes Motown should see this movie.

  • thumbs if u watch this in 2012 :D

  • Hey, Best version of this song EVER.. No contest!! Thanks so much for the post, Joan kicks ass! Px :))

  • What a truly incredibly gorgeous voice!!!!!!!!

  • Jimmy did a great job on this song......but Joan Osborne takes into infinity!! She makes it hers'. You can tell she respects this song and she fully understands how it should be sung. I've listened to this version over and over and NEVER get tired of it. Great job, Joan!

  • an angel opens a world forgotten

  • Great, great song! It's obvious Joan Osborne has a real reverence for the song and the Funk Brothers! The short scene in the movie where Joan is sitting in a diner with the musicians is priceless!

  • love the song love joan hate the haters some people just have no class.

  • Very soulful voice, my kind of sound.

  • Круто, один в один с Adele :)

  • what a soulfull voice Joan has a great voice BG

  • Hello Everyone. It appears that someone has hacked my account. Most of the positive comments about this video have received hundreds of thumbs down votes...therefore, blocking the positive comment from view. Apparently, we have a disgruntled viewer who doesn't like the fact that this version by Joan Osborne ROCKS!! I hate cheaters......so if I catch you....I will block you and report your sorry self to YT for permanent banning.

  • @xyzmikey2 i dont know why anyone would have a problem with this version, I think its an amazing tribute to the original. Especially since the funk brothers are apart of it too. Just wanted to lend my support in saying those people that hacked the account are idiots

  • @xyzmikey2 Weird comment. Joan is the best ever. Why the remark?

  • Great to see Richard Allen still enjoying his drums so much... Such a shame he passed on so soon after... Great performance, great band.

  • @deepwilsontheband man, I didn't know that, he is who inspired my comment & what moment in the video I enjoy most - his enjoyment of playing his kit.

  • still love the Jimmy Ruffin version but damn she knocked that outta the park

  • @Chris12191980 Jimmy put this song on the map. He was damned good! But Joan,,,I can't ever see ANYBODY doing this song better than her version. This version got me back together with a lost love and we stayed together until she died.

  • Great song and great voice...!!! Merry Christmas to you all!

  • AWESOME! many cover Jimmy Rufin's song. I thought that nobody could ever do half as good as MR. Rufin. well let me say that I was so wrong because here is Joan doing a FANTASTIC job. WOW! What a voice! Very nice!

  • WOW!

  • @1948TMN

Just me, but I love BOTH versions, and will listen to each.

And yes! the Funk Brothers still, and always will have "it". Merry Happy holidays to all.

  • Simply LOVE her voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just love the Funk Bro.s (RIP James) .Playing music will keep young !!

  • Not many but a few give me cold chills. AWESOME!

  • @scaramoucheX Osborne doesn't come within a million of miles of matching Ruffin's vocal power. Ruffin pop? He sang with the same soulful gospel urgency as his brother, David. Sorry but original recording with Jimmy backed up by the angelic Andantes surpasses this monotone drone by light years.

  • PISTOL KICKS BUTT!!!

  • Why give a thumbs down? Are your speakers that awful that you are unable to enjoy the awesomeness?

  • @pcfxer I agree..anyone who hits thumps down their thumb will fall off:)

  • traumhaft!!

  • Hey xyzmikey2!...do you think you can sync the audio with the video BEFORE posting?...it's almost 2012!

  • I have shared this video with friends who played in bands during the 60's and 70's; everyone has acknowledged that Joan and the Funk Brothers nailed the song. This video truly represents what music is all about - especially for those lacking musical talent like myself

  • Hey, TOTALLY AWESOME.. this is simply the BEST!! Fantastic voice, Great band,, just WONDERFUL! I've listened to this dozens of times now and it still blows me away every time, Thanks so much xyzmikey2.. Px :))

  • she is freaking awesome...the Funk Brothers r the bes. Ima abig Motown Fan.

  • This girl can SANG!!!!!!! she owned this song and the Funk Bros. they we're really proud!!!! they too did a wonderful job as well

  • Joan could sue Joe Cocker for "not doing it right."

  • It's not fair that she can wail like that. Lovely

  • This song brings back so many good memories....The good ole days...!!! Osborne does a great job with this song..!!! Thanks for sharing,....

  • Fantastic song from Jimmy ruffin, and an excellent version. I think they really nailed it with this version. Saw this stanading in the Shadows tour, I will never forget it.

  • Dit is één van de mooiste liedjes ooit!! Diep, diep, vanuit haar hart!!

  • hmz Cause life is a game

  • how can you not like this best verison ever

  • This is some really good cookin' !

  • This performance hit me the first time I saw and heard it.......just incredible

  • I'm secretly in love with Joan Osborne. Shhhh...don't tell anyone. ;)

  • What a great arrangement of an old song...great band, great backups....and Joan just pushes it to the roof! Nicely, nicely done. Anyone who has ever loved and lost has to be moved by this performance. Very well done!

  • i love watching the "Pistol" at 3:15

  • @kpix99

It's funny you say that, that's my dad's favorite part. We had this on our Ti-vo and he would watch this performance just to see him do his thing on the drums. So funny.

  • @mizzlalababy

Your father is a wise man!

    Happy Holidays!

  • I had to log in to just to say ....." WOW" ...... I am really glad that people are still singing their hearts out in these strange times !

  • A W E S O M E !!

  • It takes real talent for a white chick to take a song from a black dude and make it her own. Jimmy ya dun good, but Joan..baby you rock!!! You own it now!!! What a great performance.

  • Joan is such a gifted performer. I saw her live a few years ago in Albany, NY at The Live at Five, free concerts. I love the originality of how she takes these great R & B, Motown songs and makes them fresh.

  • rednex41, I can fully understand why. This performance is so gut-wrenching, she manages to acheive in under 5. minutes a level of emotional connection with the audience that I have seen few live broadway performers achieve with the most empathetic characters in 2 hours. (Not demeaning the latter, just trying to draw a parallel that is difficult, as she is so stunningly powerful in her delivery). Unforgettable performance! Outstanding is IMO an understatement.

  • SIMPLY OUTSTANDING JOAN!!!

  • We wouldn't have Mo'Town without the FUNK BROTHERS!

  • Am I the only person who can listen to this over and over? It is AMAZING!

  • @rednex41 No to your question, and yes, it is, to your statement.

  • @rednex41 it's amazing, I have the DVD and i've played it for people and seen them burst into tears.

  • Powerful!

  • Wow, wonderful, I have no words to describe it, fantastic vocal, congratulations.

  • Brrilliant ,,, play it so often ,,, Joans voice ,,, and the Band singers ,, beautiful music ,, love it <<<<

  • Rarely a woman appear so beautiful to me....

  • i'm so proud she is a kentuckian.she put her heart and soul into this song and it's a winner i wish she would put it on an album.

  • @gonnatapthat This song and "Love is Like a Heatwave" are both on her album Breakfast in Bed.

  • ey i'm a lady who loves to have fun

  • she picked up a classic and nailed it!

  • I hardly EVER like covers (and I didn't think I liked Joan [my left hand?] Osborne) BUT I agree with Steve - best cover ever (the Funk Brothers in the back sure helps!)

  • Joan has so much soal with one of the greatest band ever

  • Growing up in the sixties my dad had a vending business and we always had jukeboxes in the basement.Anyway I still have about 2.000 45 rpm records from those days. This song was always in my top 5 of all time.I gotta tell ya that this performance is just mind blowing awesome!!! If we could just have a little more of this music today..... To the younger generation-this IS the definition of NAILING a song with just honest vocals and talented musicians.1.500,000 and counting.

  • This is the best song on video that I have ever seen or heard.

  • The woman OWNS that song now

  • @Chuxmax1965 ditto

  • @Chuxmax1965 I agree 100%

  • Sorry Chuxmax, Joan and the Funk Brothers have produced the best version ever. I had the pleasure of hearing Jimmy do this live in England in the 60's his version was good but lacked the emotion Joan and the Funk Brothers produce in this live version

  • Standing in the Shadows is a great movie. The Funk Brohers deserve alot more credit then they got. Joan Osbourne has a great voice and makes these songs sound fresh!!! LOVE IT!

  • hm cute girl waiting to be discovered

  • I like this song to be more tranquil. I think she over sang it. But her style is still her own and great in that way.

  • From the Film "Standing in the Shadowa of Motown"

  • Speed-heads probably do not like. D.)

One of the finest live performances.

  • This is the best live version of any song I've ever heard.

  • @steve119100 amen, and agreed 100%

  • @steve119100 This song says it all in a way very few ever do. I credit this song with getting me back together with a broken love. It ended in her death from cancer but was the best year I ever had.

  • @steve119100 idon't think it's entirely live, they have probably tweaked some thinks after.

  • Classic, love it! And no cover i've ever heard has done it such justice as Joan! She truly kicks so much ass her cover makes me wanna sing!

  • i was shocked that ANYONE could match Ruffin's version of this, but I must admit that this one does. Even better - depending on personal taste.

However, while Osborne does an amazingly great job, let us not make the same mistake that so many Motown fans did (me included) back in the day: DON'T OVERLOOK THE ASTOUNDING ARRANGEMENT AND GREAT MUSICIANS AND BACKUP SINGERS!!! Incredible! Literally, incredible!!

  • My favorite singer of Broken Hearted is of course Jimmy Ruffin, but Joan Osborne really nails it as well. Joan Osborne could sing a newspaper and come up with a hit. If you like the song be surprised like I was and listen to Boy George's version. I am not a fan of his, but he does Broken Hearted very well.

  • Had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy Ruffin perform this live several times in the UK. Watching this film Joan surpasses any other performance of this song. The soul in her voice reaches right inside.

  • This song was originally written for the Temptations with the Funk Brothers playing also. But Joan KILLS IT.If you don't like this you are frigging tone deaf and should stick with Justin Beaver

  • AINT THAT THE TRUTH!

  • This has become one of my all-time favorite performances...of anything! It's great to see in the context of the movie if you can. She appears a few times and you can tell how much she truly loves Motown music. And when she's doing this song, there's a point where you can tell she knows that she's totally nailed it...and she has!! Phenomenal.

  • This version and the one she did with Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss are like uber amazing <3

  • good cover, this woman has a sweet voice and a sweet ass

  • This is just as good as the original.Never thought the original would be covered in my generation.

  • Joan Osborne had a hit of her own with "(What if God Was) One of Us" in 1998.

  • I really wasn't expecting much when I clicked on this. I was surprised.

  • i love this girl; sexy voice; she is feminine; sings very well;

    she definitely has sex appeal; excellent rendition of this song;

  • 66 people here are tone deaf and know nothing about music: revoke their right to comment! WTF is here not to like?

  • I bet no one could get Mariah Carey to sing like this today!

  • I like her!

  • WOW! She tore it up! First time i checked her out.

  • Wow, she just shamed all the other divas!!!!!!

  • i think i just fell in love....this is absolutely, positively without a doubt the best live perfomance of a song i've ever seen or heard from the smooth beginning to the powerful ending. INCREDIBLE

  • Nailed.

  • Nice job

  • this sounds terrible, ow, wait, wrong video, this sounds great

  • She is an amazing woman. Someone who got their start doing kareoke. My cousin played bass on the Relish album.

  • The best 4 minutes and 18 seconds of live music performed on staage that you would ever want to see. If this doesn't stir up your inner man to ask , "What is going on with some of the so called musicians of today, and the music they are creating?", I don't know what will. This is, as it has already been stated, what music is all about!! Will always be grateful that these musicians (of whom at this time some have passed) were kept around long enough to do this. I'm sure Joan felt the same way!

  • Great ... again and again ^^

  • This is what you call REAL music....with GREAT artist...wish our youth of today could experience this type of music....THANKS for sharing...

  • Thank you for posting this . How can anyone watch this, listen to this and not ask

how can someone draw on the emotion needed to provide a performance like this make it look so effortless? This lady has talent, she has a gift that need to be applauded.

  • WOW! She is great!

  • "Tell me....!"

  • had to come get my weekly fix of joan. i've watched this movie about 20 times and i've watched this vid about 1,455,553 times

  • @whatsthebigfndeal .....me too

  • Joan, Please come back to the West Coast and sing. Once you've seen her live it's an experience that will be remembered forever. I miss her ability to make great songs better. I'm looking forward to anytime I can attend another concert.

  • masterful all around

  • I wish she did or would do more of this kinda stuff, maybe a whole album of just good ole soul music?

  • That smug/knowing look she has as the band starts up - THAT drummer - the subtly perfect backing vocalists - the conductor (just simply claps along at one point) - the bass player and the xylophonist (and her) all nodding at the end! So many good things happening here!

    The documentary..............fantastic!

    But, THAT PERFORMANCE!

I know it's only a matter of taste, but every MAN, WOMAN and CHILD should be made to watch this NOW!

    As perfect as........................my Baby!

  • When i saw this movie / documentary, I was blown away with that voice. WOW! It was an incredible discovery how much she can sing and feel the lyrics.

  • Simply put she sing more soul i would love to hear it.

  • What an achievement. Ms Osborne I take my hat off to you. One of the truly great vocal performances of all time. Loved the doco, but that song has just swept me off my feet and continues to do so after 30 odd viewings in 3 days. It will never wear off. I am 55 and have seen/heard a lot, but this is truly something very special. A glorious tragedy. Why she is not a MAJOR star is beyond my understanding. Sing phone books and Bibles Ms O! The best cover version of all time!

  • WOW!

  • how joan has had only one major hit is beyond me, wow she can sing the phone book. what an amazing voice. joan you rock......

  • anyone know if Jimmy Ruffin ever commented on this cover? I started wathcing when it had 600K hits and just could not believe it didn't a have a million+..glad to see it has now! Best cover ever!!

  • She is a vocal powerhouse!

  • I agree Brillant version. the documentary was wonderful. Clearly the Funk Brothers did not get the credit they deserved. I was really pissed when I heard the story about James Jamerson having to SCALP tickets for Motown 25! Shame on Gordy for not having all the brothers at that show.

  • I know I've got to find some kind of peace of mind.

  • Like ! Greatings !

  • Pauk Young??

Let me introduce you to Jimmy Ruffin.

    Please.

  • WOW - just introcuced to her on the documentary

  • A Timeless Great Song! Gives Me Flashbacks! Mmmmm... :-)

  • SO MUCH SOUL. Gave me goosebumps. Absolutely fantastic.

  • 2.48 to the end. Absolutely incredible.

  • i'm gonna die of so much beauty

  • the first time i watched this i cried. it could have been the pain medicine i was on, i had just had back surgery. seriously, just listening to the stories of these guys and seeing their faces when they got to play together again. it broke my heart. berry gordy should rot in hell.

  • <3 <3 Beautiful <3 <3

  • beautiful if u like this try gene pitneys every breath i take another masterpiece by mad genius spector

  • Joan Osborne...The Funk Brothers...It just can't get any better!

  • I was born/raised around Detroit ...heard that "Motown" sound all through my youth. Motown Records may be no more but the Detroit sound lives on! ;)

  • Wow ...II have watched Standing in teh Shadows of Mowtown over and over...this is perhaps the best cut...she makes me tear up and choke each time she sings...love her and the music...whatever happened to the music ...oh I g=forgot they moved to LA and lost the soul

  • Words cannot describe the sheer BRILLIANCE of this version! Can't get enough...

  • 1,415,459 people can't be wrong.

I've watched Standing in the Shadows more than 10 times and never tire of it ... GT

  • @whazit2u1 me too, me too.....I picked up the dvd at the library thinking ohhhhhh Motown...10 times and more I have watched the movie ..I love the stories one another tell about themselves and each other and the music......never will I get enough of the Funk Brothers...and Joan Osborn ..they all fit.

  • i'd love to hear Stevie Nicks sing this song with that crusty voice of hers, heres a comment do you think lindsey lohand could play the real Stevie Nicks, i personaley don't think she could stay out of troble long enough to do Stevie Nicks justice,
