are these actually considered as gods who has the power to control things like the christian god? i'm curious. i thought taoism started out as a philosophy, how did it become a religion?
well, Taoism IS a philosophy emphasizing the balance of the natural order above all else. but these gods actually belong to the traditional Chinese folk religions, similar to Shintoism in Japan. they are, however recognized in Taoism as deities, so yeah...
Well, from my knowledge of Taoism, it has no formal sects but there are 2 distinct schools of thought; religious & philosophical. Most Chinese follow the former rather than the latter, as a matter of time-honored tradition.
Yes, within the two there are sects. Religious taoism consists of left-hand and right-hand, like any religion. one is conservatively that religion, including all traditions like chinese new year - and others are more philosophical or magical. Supreme Peace sect, Mao-shan, Ling-pao, Ch'uan-chen, Celestial Masters Sect.
Admittedly, that true enough. Each religious division (for the lack of a better word) has its own patron deity whereas the philosophical divisions are dedicated to certain forms of philosophy i.e. the Taiji, natural balance of the cosmos, etc.
The philosophy side is like secular, agnostic or atheist and the religious side are theist but more similar with Wicca & other Shamanism then with Christianity both are very much about respecting the natural world. As a Taoist you get the idea that we are not the center of the universe, humans are lucky to be sentient but are nothing special and are not some favored creation. If we cant live in harmony with nature, then the problem is us. Nature is what is regardless of personal belief.
CONFUCIANISM is a philosophy...Taoism is the native religion of China (just like Shinto is for Japan and Shamansim for Korea)...then along came the Buddhists and the two blended together to form a unique pantheon...
There are things that cannot be described by or understood through language. A complete description and understanding of the purpose and operation of the Way is beyond the power of language.
Whether you try to reason your way through life or act through emotion, the words associated with each path can be traps, not bridges, because they hide what is common to each: the presence of mystery.
it can't be regarded as religion. Maybe we should call it traditional chinese belief.
Laozi never did any religious ceremony in his life! All these goddess were created by human, some are historical persons like Kuan Di, some are legendary person and the rest are from imagination.
technically, it is considered a religion. the definition of religion is an organized approach to spirituality that includes a set of rituals, beliefs & practices, symbols, etc. traditional Chinese folk religion has all of these, so yeah. Although I do agree with you on Guan Yu; the ancient Chinese had a habit of deifying legendary individuals after their deaths.
I am from Phuket...as u may know we have the Vegetarian festival celebrating jiu huang ye.. alot of us have god chosen as their nephew...and my god is 池府王爺. btw...where u get the music!!?
its a when a god spirit enters a medium, and do ceremonies....its quite complicated....if u are from a place that is believe in this taoist/folk religion u would understand
usually...ur parent would bring u to the temple when u r young and ask if the god could take u as one of his follower or anything the god wish...so that he could protect ur life. The god spirit which is in the medium body will decide. In my case...i was quite a naughty baby and hard to tame...so my dad took me to the temple to be the gods nephew...wishing he could tame me down...according to my dad...i was better ever since
well, i don't understand chinese but i surely want to know about taoism. Can you pls write the names of god in english..so that we can understand better!...

Far too many westerners have too little knowledge about the whole package of taoism.
Most westerners only know Tao De Jing and Lao Zi.

Depends what sect of taoists you look at. Nowadays Zen Buddhists are more taoist than the right-hand taoists of modern china.
