Reading, writing and performing basic math is still enough of an education in many situations. We still, however, haven't reached that goal, as far as I can see.
You are right schools are schools and should worry about teaching our kids better not more pay. They are taking our money so the should pay more attention to our kids. Over the years we give more and more money but we don't get better results. We need good teachers not unions.
Actually one of these teachers said she wanted out of the union and to stop paying dues but was forced to continue because she did not live in a right to work state. Also what you call silly rules I call union control and it is hurting our kids. The teacher that decided not to join the union had already contributed to a committee and they had adopted her idea, she was an asset. Due to union control she was forced out and our kids lost an advocate and asset to them.
So, just so I have this right... These teachers were never forced to join the union. One consistently said she didn't join the union. Yes, they might have been some silly rules, but if they didn't want to join the union, they didn't have to.
Also, the board member stated that schools are a business. Really? What is the goal of a business? To deliver a quality product or service to customers? No. It is to return financial profit to owners/share holders. Schools aren't businesses. They're schools
I greatly appreciate this video. I would only caution that one of the female teacher made it seem like its Republicans who are pushing merit pay. Both political parties are pushing this.
I left teaching a long time ago-I simply could not work WITH the Union. I loved the students! I still, after 40 years, still communicate with the students!

The US already spends more per student than any other country, and the money just goes down the tube of bureaucracy and corruption.
Merit pay is constantly opposed by the union b/c it dilutes its political power.
Firing bad teachers is impossible and costly. Less than 0.1% of teachers get fired. Once they get tenure they can get away with everything.
The union is the cancer of American education.

The system is the problem. Dump the department of education and go all charter.

ACtually yes they have to.. and if they dont... they are restricted from many of the committees and restricted from many functions.
YES the schools are in the business of teaching our kids...
THEY SHOULD be in business to compete for the parents attention..and childrens attendance.
END UNIONS AND GET VOUCHERS!
