I honestly think there is more to that story than what people are saying, because no one just turns around one day and says "I want to be a mass murderer and kill every living thing" something had to trigger that and I think the mercy he shows towards the children proves my theory he isn't a complete maniac and if he was so ruthless, then how come he ran? The only reason he killed then was because they wanted to kill him and he was protecting himself.
@DeppObsessed1 It proves nothing. Fact that he left the children alone was an act done out of self interest. If he were to kill them, he would've given away his position. Secondly, the chasers wanted to kill him because he were on the British side of the war, and that he had killed many of their own comrades before. He ran because he knew he couldn't win against such numbers. While it is true that there is more depth to the Hessian character, the quality of your proof is found wanting.
@DeppObsessed1 Bullshit they specifically said that he was notorious for his love of combat. Perhaps he didn't kill the children because it would make noise as he was trying to escape. Maybe it was his code not to hack apart anyone younger than thirteen. Whatever. He's still a bloodthirsty bastard. Not everyone is just misunderstood. Such a terrible cliche you see nowadays.
The Hessian, AKA, the Horseman - guy's backstory is the classic Blood Knight. Where his comrades traded blood for money, (truth in television by the way) he fought for the sheer joy of it. While a brutal and merciless opponent on the battlefield, he did have a small bit of honor - comforting his fallen horse, and he could quite have easily killed those two girls - but he did not.
Even when she snapped the branch and exposed him, he still did not harm them.
This kind of reminds me of The Lord of the Rings. One thing people forget about the American Revolutionary War is that England got help from other countries to make sure the the Colonists didn't succeed in their revolt. The Hessians are a good example. The Hessian Horseman may be fictional, but he may have been inspired by Vlad "the Impaler" or Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Just to say, Blackneard in "On Stranger Tides" was stupid. I would have rather seen this fellow.
