My Dad, Doug Moon, was the lead guitarist for the original version. No wonder I love The Black Keys so much.... similar genres. I wish I could meet these guys. -Bonnie Moon
This sounds crazy but they remind me of Queen, my favorite band and greatest ever. They have a very distinctive sound and vocals like Queen and also great soft to hard moments like them
The Keys do the BEST covers. I think it's because they never choose a song they can't just jam to, know what I mean? Like even their cover of "Dearest" is very Keys. I dunno if I'm making any sense. Just enjoy the damn song!
Can't see why people prefer theCaptains version as I am sure that this is as close you get to a fine rendition of that song and I prefer the splash of pure exuberance as the guitar comes in to the mix .
This song rocks! Can't wait to see them at Bonnaroo this year! Check out Buffalo Culture with our Janglin cover from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes!
I just want to point out to the guy who said they overdubb many songs of past albums (pre brothers) with bass.
They indeed do add bass afterwards, but at least we know that it is Dan Auerbach who was recording the bass track, and piano tracks (or Organ piano in some songs).
But yeah, now they have a pianist and a bassist who tours with them.
Sucks to be those guys though, no recognition whatsoever lolz
Im glad I heard Tighten Up on the radio. I never heard the name of the band so looked it up on Q101 and read, "The Black Keys". I looked up some of their songs and fell in love.
Gotta love the highest rated comments. Best band of our time!? This is a Captain Beefheart Cover. I bet most of those who commented on this song wouldn't even give Beefheart a chance.
@Skiptracer1981 This band introduced me to the Captain. Safe as Milk is one of my favorite albums of all time and I'm exploring Beefheart more and more. I do think this is the best band of the 21st century so far. That's just my opinion.
@BrockDavisson I actually found and made friends w/someone on Facebook that was fortunate to download it off their MySpace when they gave it out and he was nice enough to email it to me, so I have it now. Gotta love good music! P.S. I have a son named Brock!
I had a chance to see these guys when they came to Seattle with a bunch of other bands. I left after the band i went to see (CAKE) was done. The Black Keys were after Jimmy Eat World and I didnt feel like sticking around. After listening to this im thinking i should have stayed...
The Black Keys can stand against any classic rock band, they've taken all that and put into their own gritty sound and obviously Dan's lived many lives cuz he can sing like the passion pours from his soul. The Black Keys have renewed my love for Rock 'n Roll.
I'm Glad may be a cover but The Keys have made it their own. I dig it when they cover songs, cuz they always make them better and more souldful

these guys are now my favorite band of this decade. sure, i dont think they will be able to compete with the classics but they blow the shitty other shitty music of this generation out of the water. these guys are single-handedly saving rock and roll
@pinatafication Agree with most of your statements except.."i dont think they will be able to compete with the classics". I think the Keys can hold their own next to any Classic Rock/Blues musicians from generations past to today.
@cachick420 maybe in the future but do you really think that the black keys could compete with the likes of Cream or the animals or the stones or the yardbirds? not yet, but if they keep putting out albums like they are now and they keep making better music, maybe they can be someday, but not today
@pinatafication You've named some incredible, influential bands but if you really think about it...The Black Keys are just 2 guys with a sound as filling as if they were a 5 man band. Dan's vocals and guitar playing alone are so raw and dirty, it almost feels like he doesn't belong in this time...I do stand by my statement that The Keys could stand alongside the greats but do appreciate your opinion. It's refreshing that people can actually disagree without it getting ugly.
Big Beefheart fan...but never knew this song! I was checking out all the awesome Black Keys songs and stumbled across this cover....and LOVED it! Then listened to the Beefheart original....BLEW THIS ONE AWAY! So, doesn't make me like the BK less...but more in fact!
Please post that this is a Captain Beefheart cover so the kids don't become uprooted from history and that they have the oppurtunity to discover the past and find out that the original completely destroys this one-dimensional, lackluster rendition. Thank you.
Yes! Thank you for covering my favorite song by Beefheart. I would have been slighty disappointed to find out it was an original just with the same title. I think I enjoy Beefhearts version better because its so Mo towny. Im happy I have two versions to love, tho.
Always thought this was probably the most underated track of the early tracks Mr Vliet- alias Captain Beefheart, had ever recorded. It appeared on Safe As Milk ( a must buy in my opinion).I;m so Glad the Black KEYS have chosen to do this.

This song is amazing, but they could have done a much better job recording this. There's a live version of them doing this on here somewhere, and Dan has this reverb effect on his vocals... it blows this (and Beefheart, imo) out of the water.
i guess im just too much into blues, rock, folk country etc. i cant really stand the vocals in rap. although the more i hear it the more it grows on me. i still wouldnt say i like it. but i find it bearable now.
There is all kinds of rap like there are different variations of the music you listen to. If youre trying to get into rap, and youre listening to the radio, of course you are not going to like it hahaa. I wouldn't blame you.
i hear exactly what youre saying. the stuff on the radio is the stuff that shits me the most and i do find some of the underground stuff pretty groovy. the party sorta stuff is pretty cool, its just the macho, 'hardest nigga in the world' shit that annoys the fuck out of me. after studying the blues for as long as i have , i cant help but think the majority of todays rappers, had they lived 40-50 years ago, wouldve had their pathetic little bottoms smacked. cheers
I don't think they would've had their little bottoms smacked. Most rappers that are recognized as legitimate by their peers are highly talented artists. They most likely would have been drawn to what most creative African Americans were doing, rhythm and blues. Real rap is an extension of the blues that started with the African Americans in the first place. Start with Mos Def then work your way down, you will find poetry.
@BenjaminJamesMarlin umm, Afiricans have started many MANY music tastes. The Black Keys were very influinced by a black guy and just thnink of motown, reggae, rock n Roll and many more. Black people are better and more soulful then anyone. I don't care if that sounds racist.
@ElvisLivesUpstairs Dan and Pat are just as soulful as any black guy. And I know plenty of black dudes that don't have an ounce of soul in em. Soul is more of a je ne sais quoi. Some people have it, some don't.
nno way does blakroc sound better than the keys. Really blakroc only had a couple of good songs, those with Mos Def and RZA. the others did not have all that great lyrics or vocals.
that's an opinion, not a fact. so you're entitled to think what you want. me personally, I still think they sound better as blackroc. plain and simple
take a listen to captain beefhearts version of this an grown so ugly... tbh i think the keys have nailed them, sound more like their songs than his! awesome
I prefer the beefheart version.

i guess im just too much into blues, rock, folk country etc. i cant really stand the vocals in rap. although the more i hear it the more it grows on me. i still wouldnt say i like it. but i find it bearable now.

@ElvisLivesUpstairs
sounds pretty racist but whatev man, i think everybody should just enjoy this music bruh
cmoneyy11 1 year ago
@ElvisLivesUpstairs Dan and Pat are just as soulful as any black guy. And I know plenty of black dudes that don't have an ounce of soul in em. Soul is more of a je ne sais quoi. Some people have it, some don't.

the blakroc album is good but in no way better than the keys themselves... just a side project
KDoc21 1 year ago
The reason I said that is because I dont usually listen to this kind of music. at least by itself. So I think the statement I made was valid.

nno way does blakroc sound better than the keys. Really blakroc only had a couple of good songs, those with Mos Def and RZA. the others did not have all that great lyrics or vocals.

@wick2107
that's an opinion, not a fact. so you're entitled to think what you want. me personally, I still think they sound better as blackroc. plain and simple
