  • I prefer the beefheart version.

  • My Dad, Doug Moon, was the lead guitarist for the original version. No wonder I love The Black Keys so much.... similar genres. I wish I could meet these guys. -Bonnie Moon

  • Pretty Awesome song !~

  • black magic

  • all 12 of dan's ex's hit thumbs down.

  • @cp0uch Pfff, Dan doesn't have ex's! He keeps them all in his pocket and uses them when he needs to write a song, or a sammich!

  • When my ex left me 3 months ago i was sad, but now im glad, glad about the good times we had

  • Where can i buy this Black Keys version??

  • @jbos1966 it was a free download on their myspace page. i don't think you can buy it anywhere

  • 11 people accidentally clicked on the wrong button...

  • Sooo good nothing more to say really

  • haha I love the black keys <3

  • I think SirGeorge was only pointing out that it wasn't a posthumous tribute.

  • I'm Glad for the Black Keys

  • The Black Keys have covered a few Beefheart songs. "grown so ugly" on rubber factory.

  • This sounds crazy but they remind me of Queen, my favorite band and greatest ever. They have a very distinctive sound and vocals like Queen and also great soft to hard moments like them

  • The Keys do the BEST covers. I think it's because they never choose a song they can't just jam to, know what I mean? Like even their cover of "Dearest" is very Keys. I dunno if I'm making any sense. Just enjoy the damn song!

  • @siamesehummer LOL I'm high right now too. So, yeah, I know what you mean.

  • Capt. Beefheart died in 2010 and this was uploaded in 2008....

  • @SirGeorge8600 so they aren't allowed to do a cover song while the original artist is still alive?

  • what album is this on? tribute to the captain?

  • Can't see why people prefer theCaptains version as I am sure that this is as close you get to a fine rendition of that song and I prefer the splash of pure exuberance as the guitar comes in to the mix .

  • @rustyrollers ur an idiot, shut the fuck up.

  • I really can't get over how amazing these guys are.

  • @xcassimus I know, and I just discovered them yesterday! they're freakin amazing......so easy to listen to.

  • I prefer the captain beefheart version but it's a really good tribute to him! Good job BK!

  • I prfer the captain beefheart but it's a really good tribute to him! Good job BK!

  • Wow....just wow!

  • Best band!

  • This is the ONLY instance where I prefer the original to The Black Keys' version.

  • @Chilling10680 who does the original?

  • @Chilling10680

I dig the Black Keys but I certainly don't prefer their version of "Grown So Ugly" either.

  • Love this band

  • this is amazing.

  • i hope this is on their new album coming up

  • I just want to point out to the guy who said they overdubb many songs of past albums (pre brothers) with bass.

They indeed do add bass afterwards, but at least we know that it is Dan Auerbach who was recording the bass track, and piano tracks (or Organ piano in some songs).

But yeah, now they have a pianist and a bassist who tours with them.

Sucks to be those guys though, no recognition whatsoever lolz

  • Download the audio from this video at searchripgrab doht cohm.

  • I am so honored to have both top rated comments <3

  • @refusedchad to bad they say the same thing haha

  • the beginning blows me away instantly :') great song

  • i prefer the original, but i respect this band

  • Im glad I heard Tighten Up on the radio. I never heard the name of the band so looked it up on Q101 and read, "The Black Keys". I looked up some of their songs and fell in love.

  • Gotta love the highest rated comments. Best band of our time!? This is a Captain Beefheart Cover. I bet most of those who commented on this song wouldn't even give Beefheart a chance.

  • @Skiptracer1981 This band introduced me to the Captain. Safe as Milk is one of my favorite albums of all time and I'm exploring Beefheart more and more. I do think this is the best band of the 21st century so far. That's just my opinion.

  • The tits

  • ....Al Green- How do you mend a broken heart. The Black Keys are the tits.

  • huh they have a bass guitar in this and its before Brothers, interesting

  • @CoCoNmAn93 They've always over dubbed bass through out all their albums. Not every single song, but lots of them have bass.

  • @zoso1019 Yeah but they never toured with a bassist. Until now.

  • Dan does a good Beefheart, who does a good Wolf... hvil i fred! Buhuuu :(

  • I love how they did this cover

  • @BrockDavisson I actually found and made friends w/someone on Facebook that was fortunate to download it off their MySpace when they gave it out and he was nice enough to email it to me, so I have it now. Gotta love good music! P.S. I have a son named Brock!

  • I had a chance to see these guys when they came to Seattle with a bunch of other bands. I left after the band i went to see (CAKE) was done. The Black Keys were after Jimmy Eat World and I didnt feel like sticking around. After listening to this im thinking i should have stayed...

  • @xkdawg360x yeah that was deck the hall ball and you made a big mistake. They were amazing!

  • this is the most beautiful cover, ever.

  • this isa capt. beefheart cover!

  • Saw them at brixton this year. Quite clearly the best band .... this side of the Stones......oops. ;0)

  • 8 people are not glad

  • The Black Keys can stand against any classic rock band, they've taken all that and put into their own gritty sound and obviously Dan's lived many lives cuz he can sing like the passion pours from his soul. The Black Keys have renewed my love for Rock 'n Roll.

I'm Glad may be a cover but The Keys have made it their own. I dig it when they cover songs, cuz they always make them better and more souldful

  • Omg, I love The Black Keys!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is a cover of Capt. Beefheart - who died last week - RIP Dan Van Vliet!

  • Easily The Best Band Period.!!

  • R.I.P captain beefheart!

  • Awesome tune! as great as the original! Perfect song to sleep on.

  • Love TBK, best blues rock band nowadays !

  • I love all the difference in opinions, with all the comments. Lol. Music is passionate! Love it!

I love the song btw. Lots of soul! Refreshing...

  • Rock & Roll and Blues- beautiful mixture. Great band.

  • 7!!!!! people are not glad

  • lovethissong it would be 3 words but this song is too good :)

  • they're like, the best band of my generation

  • I love their captain covers they always do it classy justice!

  • RIP Captain Beefheart

  • Anyone know what album this cover is on? I wanted to buy it off of Itunes, but I can't find it on there.

  • @Valerieabear It used to be free 2 years ago when they first recorded it. It was offered off MySpace but I tried to download now & no dice :(

  • @cachick420 Damn, that sux. I guess I'll have to find someone w/Limewire to download it for me and email it to me. (I would never put Limewire on my pc again--it already killed one pc. LOL.)

  • @Valerieabear Yeah, definitely not worth destroying your computer for a song albeit such a great cover as this one. If I find out where to get it, I'll send out another message :)

  • @cachick420 I have it now. If you don't have it yet, I'd be glad to email it to you like someone on Facebook was nice enough to give to me.

  • @Valerieabear Yes, that would be great if you could email me although I don't want to put my email address on here..hahaha :/

  • @Valerieabear could you email it to me I'd appreciate it jpuccio1020@att.net. thanks.

  • @Valerieabear could you email it to me I'd appreciate it jpuccio1020@att.net. thanks.

  • these guys are now my favorite band of this decade. sure, i dont think they will be able to compete with the classics but they blow the shitty other shitty music of this generation out of the water. these guys are single-handedly saving rock and roll

  • @pinatafication Agree with most of your statements except.."i dont think they will be able to compete with the classics". I think the Keys can hold their own next to any Classic Rock/Blues musicians from generations past to today.

  • @cachick420 maybe in the future but do you really think that the black keys could compete with the likes of Cream or the animals or the stones or the yardbirds? not yet, but if they keep putting out albums like they are now and they keep making better music, maybe they can be someday, but not today

  • @pinatafication You've named some incredible, influential bands but if you really think about it...The Black Keys are just 2 guys with a sound as filling as if they were a 5 man band. Dan's vocals and guitar playing alone are so raw and dirty, it almost feels like he doesn't belong in this time...I do stand by my statement that The Keys could stand alongside the greats but do appreciate your opinion. It's refreshing that people can actually disagree without it getting ugly.

  • I can just feel the soul in this version, more than Beefheart...

  • Hope they play this when I see them in Amsterdam! Please......LOVE this version

  • hell yeah some more beefheart !

  • Love this freakin song!

  • @phreshr212 the catalogue of this band is infinite must be interesting for them to do a set list man challenging stuff just love them............

  • ohh this is good!

  • I like this song. just letting everyone know.

  • Dan is the man....That is all.

  • Big Beefheart fan...but never knew this song! I was checking out all the awesome Black Keys songs and stumbled across this cover....and LOVED it! Then listened to the Beefheart original....BLEW THIS ONE AWAY! So, doesn't make me like the BK less...but more in fact!

  • @ntm1488 reasonable voices are too quiet

  • Please post that this is a Captain Beefheart cover so the kids don't become uprooted from history and that they have the oppurtunity to discover the past and find out that the original completely destroys this one-dimensional, lackluster rendition. Thank you.

  • @juantostada hey fuck you. with a name like captain beefheart no wonder nobody has heard of him.

  • @dude1440 and ill bet with a name like dude1440 you would say something ignorant like that. dumfuck.

  • great old sound to this song really brings me back yet is refreshingly new

  • Yes! Thank you for covering my favorite song by Beefheart. I would have been slighty disappointed to find out it was an original just with the same title. I think I enjoy Beefhearts version better because its so Mo towny. Im happy I have two versions to love, tho.

  • wowowowowowowowowow. they are fucking amazing

  • Best band of our time.

  • @refusedchad I'm not sure it's even close either. Competitors anyone?

  • @refusedchad HAHA. You sir must not listen to much music!

  • @refusedchad

    Glad to hear it!

  • This is the best rock and roll band of our time.

  • @refusedchad they are!

  • @refusedchad Jesus, I have never agreed with anything more in my life.

  • @refusedchad They are a blues band dude

  • Always thought this was probably the most underated track of the early tracks Mr Vliet- alias Captain Beefheart, had ever recorded. It appeared on Safe As Milk ( a must buy in my opinion).I;m so Glad the Black KEYS have chosen to do this.

  • does anyone know i can get this song on itunes? is it on any cds?

  • What a wonderfull 4:15 minutes...

  • what cd is this on?

  • you guys you can download it using mp3 converter on firefox.

  • Frank Rocks!!!

  • Anyone have this mp3???!! If so, can you email it to me? please!!

  • this song is just beautiful

  • @truebeliever093 thats what your mom said about my hairy nutsack when i lowered it on her face, you know one testicle in each eye socket while the length of my shaft resting on her nose....you know gladiator style.

  • This ISN'T t from Dan's solo album. It's just a cover that was never released.

  • INSTANT CLASSIC - love this song

  • For the racist. You obviously know NOTHING about real history. The Blues began in the "west indies" when Irish and African slaves blended their music together. You knew white people were slaves too, right? No race is above any other here. We all express and create from our souls you idiot. Good luck with your ignorance.

  • OMG..I love this song...

  • what album is this from? is it from Brothers?

  • wonder what album this is off of? cuz i got em all and dont have dis one..anybody.? little help...pimp down!

  • @nun4hire28

It's from his solo album. It's really great. Although the rest of it sounds nothing like this, it's pretty much like a Black Keys CD.

  • Pretty good but cant touch beefheart

  • Comment removed

  • @bananafantasy Why cos hes an originator, when the keys are just doing more of the same? Yeah, yeah, sure he does =P

beefheart was an inovater and not to mention the writer of this song and other songs the Black Keys have covered. Next time dont be so ignorant.

  • @bananafantasy

stop trollin just because you have fantasies of male bananas. I love the black keys and this cover is just as good as the original but Vilet was a genius and zoot horn rollo was one of the best guitarists to grace the earth.

  • Thanks God for this band.....we've had to indure some really BAD bands but now, there is hope again!

  • The Black Keys are amazing, rock lives on through them!!!!

  • i love captain beefheart

    this is a great cover

  • check out the white stripes cover of party of special things to do

  • Another amazing cover song!

They should just do another cover album.

  • The Keys continue to amaze me. The greatness continues to grow in these two.

  • could someone please send me the mp3 of this, What else can you say.....Awesome

  • This song is amazing, but they could have done a much better job recording this. There's a live version of them doing this on here somewhere, and Dan has this reverb effect on his vocals... it blows this (and Beefheart, imo) out of the water.

  • @TheBrowndawg

whats wrong w/ black roc?? if anything, they sound better w/ them

  • i guess im just too much into blues, rock, folk country etc. i cant really stand the vocals in rap. although the more i hear it the more it grows on me. i still wouldnt say i like it. but i find it bearable now.

  • @TheBrowndawg

There is all kinds of rap like there are different variations of the music you listen to. If youre trying to get into rap, and youre listening to the radio, of course you are not going to like it hahaa. I wouldn't blame you.

  • i hear exactly what youre saying. the stuff on the radio is the stuff that shits me the most and i do find some of the underground stuff pretty groovy. the party sorta stuff is pretty cool, its just the macho, 'hardest nigga in the world' shit that annoys the fuck out of me. after studying the blues for as long as i have , i cant help but think the majority of todays rappers, had they lived 40-50 years ago, wouldve had their pathetic little bottoms smacked. cheers

  • I don't think they would've had their little bottoms smacked. Most rappers that are recognized as legitimate by their peers are highly talented artists. They most likely would have been drawn to what most creative African Americans were doing, rhythm and blues. Real rap is an extension of the blues that started with the African Americans in the first place. Start with Mos Def then work your way down, you will find poetry.

  • @BenjaminJamesMarlin umm, Afiricans have started many MANY music tastes. The Black Keys were very influinced by a black guy and just thnink of motown, reggae, rock n Roll and many more. Black people are better and more soulful then anyone. I don't care if that sounds racist.

  • @ElvisLivesUpstairs

sounds pretty racist but whatev man, i think everybody should just enjoy this music bruh

  • @ElvisLivesUpstairs Dan and Pat are just as soulful as any black guy. And I know plenty of black dudes that don't have an ounce of soul in em. Soul is more of a je ne sais quoi. Some people have it, some don't.

  • the blakroc album is good but in no way better than the keys themselves... just a side project

  • The reason I said that is because I dont usually listen to this kind of music. at least by itself. So I think the statement I made was valid.

  • nno way does blakroc sound better than the keys. Really blakroc only had a couple of good songs, those with Mos Def and RZA. the others did not have all that great lyrics or vocals.

  • @wick2107

that's an opinion, not a fact. so you're entitled to think what you want. me personally, I still think they sound better as blackroc. plain and simple

  • take a listen to captain beefhearts version of this an grown so ugly... tbh i think the keys have nailed them, sound more like their songs than his! awesome

  • OMG They are so fuckin tight!!!!

  • 1 2 3 and 1 2 3 and... waltzy

  • how come i cant find this song on itunes?
