@caeciliusnerval Please explain what is overtly Christian about this concerto, or any other secular work by Bach.
Did you know that several of Bach's sacred cantatas are parodies of secular works he had composed for celebrations of nobility and royalty, e.g, birthdays, coronations, etc.? The words were changed from secular to sacred, but the music remained essentially the same, except for minor alterations possible changes in scoring, This was a very common practice in the baroque.
@wcbroccoli Did you know that many of the 4-part choruses in Handel's Messiah are parodies of Italian language secular duets he'd composed a few months before? You can still hear evidence of the original duet texture in the choruses. The chorus "For unto us a child is born" was derived from the duet "No, di voi non vo fidarmi" ("No! I will not trust you!") -- which explains the peculiar accent on the word "For".
@wcbroccoli J.S. Bach was a devout Protestant. You could say his whole life was an act of worship. He wrote: "Music's only purpose should be the glory of God and the recreation of the human spirit." So in a sense the answer to your question should be "What is overtly secular about this work?" I am not a Christian of any kind; in fact I don't believe in any god. But I have to admit that the music of Bach does make me wonder.
@holtlynx This still does not explain your statement that "the Bach music ...is overtly christian." Precisely what are the "overtly Christian" features of this (or any other) secular Bach work?
@holtlynx Bach lived and died in a region of Germany known as Saxony, ruled by the Saxon dukes, where the official state religion was Lutheranism. Every town in Saxony supported at least one Lutheran church. EVERYONE in Saxony, not just Bach, was devout. Every child in Saxony received Lutheran religious training.
@holtlynx The Bach quote you reference reflects a typical Lutheran sentiment, inspired by the teachings of Luther and the biblical exhortation that all one’s thoughts, words and deeds should give glory to God. It’s the same thing I was taught as a child in Catholic parochial school.
@ColinMcGraw I don't know where you got that idea, Colin, but I'm afraid you are just plain wrong unless you think Martin Luther was a Catholic. That would make for a very odd reading of the Reformation.
@ColinMcGraw Martin Luther was Catholic before he was excommunicated, im not wrong because Bach lived in Germany which (other than Italy) was the main country still part of the Holy Roman Empire and back then the lords of the land where catholic and odds where that you where too. Sorry buddy, Bach was Catholic not Protestant.
@caeciliusnerval Since you say you’re not a Christian of any kind, I have to wonder why you object to the imagery of three trees and why you believe “it is unsettlingly covertly christian.” I suspect the uploader intended nothing more than a reference to the fact that this is the 3rd concerto of six. Do you also object that Bach scored this concerto for 3 violins, 3 violas and 3 cellos, or that 6 = 2 x 3? In Bach’s time, concertos were typically published in sets of 6 or 12.
I hated the concertos until i heard it at this speed, the others are so... well it makes even the best other recordings of this sound like a bunch of kids from a farm town... so overshadowed by this recording that none of the others even begin to stir half of the emotion that i expect to hear every time i listen to this. to those who say it's to fast and not as good of a recoding as the ones they listen to, you are slow, and most likely cannot distinguish what these artists bring to life.
Being in high school it is wierd how people think I wouldn't like classical music. It doesn't really matter how I came across it, but rather all that matters is that I love it! Thanks for the Bach upload!
What a fine version. I don't agree that it's taken too fast. Naturally, it's all a matter of taste, but I think this tempo still allows plenty of clarity and distinction between the instruments as they talk to each other, while also giving it a beguiling drive and dynamism, which adds spice.
@HARMONICO101 Hmmm I was not aware of that! Thanks for letting me know!
As an organist I'm more familiar with, and thus go by, his organ solo works (like the trio sonatas, then BWV 531 BWV 581 and so on) none of which have any meter specifications.
harmonico101, love the piece, but i more inently love your comments onto everyone elses comments, they are a crack up. but highly enjoyable, but for me i keep up on legato style movements more as mozart horn concerto in D major, but still wonderful music, of which is completely brilliant =)
@HARMONICO101 Yes you're right, but I can like it or not, I don't like this tipe of interpretation, also, if a lot of musicians play this piece more legato would be for any reason.
@Hispanoyorgulloso you don't understand what I am saying: it doesn't have to be more legato, it also doesn't have to be less legato. It's a matter of individual taste and subjective interpretation. That is what I am trying to say.
Why oh why does every version rush through the third movement?!?!?! I know its supposed to be exhilarating, but rarely is played with dynamics. Its always "full steam ahead"!
@deriobamba not everyone does it, live ive only ever seen people stretch it out way too much lol so it's probably better a little quicker and more fun to through rather than boring... i only really liked it slow once but i could sit and listen to the faster version a million times, but ultimately it's up to the performers and these peformers are so precise it's an art no matter what they play lol.
Hey.. wasn't this first movement used in a Cantata??? I heard a cantata of Bach's on TV recently and it sounded like the first mvmnt of this BB concerto.
The chamber Orchestra at my high school was playing this just yesterday when I went in to visit the orchestra teacher, and I also picked up a string bass for the first time in almost two years (since the end of my Junior year), and I have to say that this is one of my favorite Bach pieces.
Efectivamente.!Esta es una de las mejores interpretaciones que he oído de los Conciertos de Brandenburgo.Resulta excepcional por lo equilibrada y bella.
It certainly deserved to be "best"in someone's view...it really is a stupendous recording. Probably one of the only to compete with Koopman and the Amsterdam.
I've never been fully satisfied with Koopman's instrumental ensemble Bach. So I've tried to find alternatives. My favorite ensembles who have had their hand in Bach are these performers (Concerto Italiano) and an almost unheard of but absolutely superb group called "Cafe Zimmerman" after the cafe that Bach often performed at in Leipzig.
I like not only to listen to the music, but to also read the comments that have been made about this music. it only enhaces the pleasure offered by the music.
Wow, the allegro is played at one of the fastest tempos I've ever heard the movement played at -- and the orchestra didn't fall apart at all. Special kudos to the violin and viola solo, playing that part that fast is wickedly hard. (I've played the viola solo)
This is the best recording I've ever heard of this! I used to play the violin and nothing was ever fast enough for me - I'd make an exception for this. It's fantastic, thanks for putting it up :)
Such distilled joy, every moment always seems to elate me. I have always found this concerto to be one of my favorites pieces of classical music. So many other pieces of classical music can be tedious to me at times, but this series and this particular concerto always seem so fresh and vibrant to me.
