I love that Obama has challenged US car manufacturers to stop copying and start innovating.
Obama is by and large right on energy, but needs to be more specific on a specific economic incentives package to interest the private sector of the US to invest in more refining capacity, alternative technologies for energy production and more fuel use efficient cars.
He will have to be fairly heavy-handed when it comes to policy regarding fuel efficiency and alternate fuels. Auto companies are mostly tooled for 4-stroke internal combustion engines to run on gasoline or diesel. It will cost them a fortune to refab their plants to keep up with a bill that forces different engineering. Unless Barack makes it clear that the future is there, and those refusing to join it will flounder, they'll be reluctant to come on board.
Using windfall profit taxes to fund research in alternative fuels and alternative energy sources is a great idea. I like the irony of the questioner driving an Excalade. :-)

Obama is by and large right on energy, but needs to be more specific on a specific economic incentives package to interest the private sector of the US to invest in more refining capacity, alternative technologies for energy production and more fuel use efficient cars.

Ugh! I drive a Chevy Suburban. My whole family fits in it, but it gets like 1/2 a mile per gallon! lol
My family needs a vehicle that can hold us all, but not eat into my kid's college funds to fuel up.

He will have to be fairly heavy-handed when it comes to policy regarding fuel efficiency and alternate fuels. Auto companies are mostly tooled for 4-stroke internal combustion engines to run on gasoline or diesel. It will cost them a fortune to refab their plants to keep up with a bill that forces different engineering. Unless Barack makes it clear that the future is there, and those refusing to join it will flounder, they'll be reluctant to come on board.

It's funny. I followed the campaign since last year and nobody had talked about mortgage crisis. Then they all jumped on board when it broke out!!! It's the same thing with Gas. Nobody talked about it untill it hits $3/gallon. And some even want to add more taxes to it?

Its good to hear a politician talk truthfully. Trade in those gas guzzlers. My truck is paid for and I don't like the idea of a new car payment, but with what I'm paying for gas and maintenance, a more efficient car might not be so bad.

We Love Beckley and all of West Virginia,
We don't love paying the toll just to travel between Beckley and Bluefield though. Along with gas prices, this must be really hard for folks to pay.

All those that think that Obama is all good speeches but little substance should listen to this speech and others like it. Obama is both knowledgeable and eloquent. Believe it or not, that is possible; very hard, but possible. If you talk about serious issues in a way that relates to people's problems, they will listen and you won't put them to sleep. On top of it he is always candid. In this video he points some uncomfortable truth to his audience.
