Pop music is very simple so it only makes sense that people will listen to it.
MUSICAL TASTE IS SUBJECTIVE. Art is strange, and has to do with something called "quality". Some people enjoy what others call shitty and vice versa. THERE IS NOTHING OBJECTIVE ABOUT MUSICAL TASTE. that said, I don't respect a lot of mainstream music at this point, because I believe in musical integrity. Electronic music means just as much to me as rock music in terms of artistic value because i'm musically open-minded. My favorite album of the last 20 years is Boards of Canada's Music has the right... but I enjoy so much other stuff.

@LoudThingsSuck and just so you know europe has consistently been ahead of america as far as musical movements (punk, hardcore, indie scenes, etc.) and american music wouldn't exist without european music. You may be thinking of typical euro electronic music which has a tendency to be cheesy, but it's not trash just because you don't like it. Cultures are different across the pond and you should respect that. I like older country (patsy cline/willie nelson/etc.) but modern country less so.

But the funny thing about music is most sad stuff is written in a minor key, so when you transpose it to a major key it sounds happy, leaving the interpretation up to the person playing it as well as the listener.
