When all three drones hit the larger beam at once, it would appear they are able to break through cleanly because the beam is splitting its durability points between three drones instead of two.

ACtually, if you count the drones that make it past the psionic blaster. On the no charge only 5 drones make it through, in the max charge 7 drones make it through.
