I am so excited about this movie. I think it's so clever to do a real time movie. If you're interested in this movie, maybe check out my new blog? beckdblog.blogspot.com I talk about this movie and other movies and TV shows I think are the best out there right now.
Shadow of a Doubt is awesome! As a tie-in to Silent House, Hitchcock's Rope could've been an interesting choice too. Not done in one continuous take, but the shots are as long as they could make them, considering they were limited by the length of film reels (around 15 minutes, I believe)
Can I just say.....Wisconsin is not Alaska? Like we have winters and frozen lakes, but nothing so solid that you'd have to cut through. Um...yeah. I wish Film makers would give WI some love. That is all.
Although it's "supposed" to be all one take, I find it very unlikely that they actually managed to pull that off. Maybe they did, but it looks to me like there may have been a few whip cuts in the trailer giving the illusion of one take??? 07:03 for example, maybe?? I don't know.
I'm with Josh. I don't remember too many trailers doing the flashing picture thing. I did dig the guy's voice in the trailer though. I immediately thought of TCM when I heard him.
@FilmState Ryan...About The Silent House: the original film is not spanish...it's Uruguayan. And I think the trailer has that "take a picture thing" because in the original film, Photography is a main part of the storyline...anyways, love your shows, keep it up!
the reason they use the taking picture technique in the silent house trailer is because in the film there is a scene where its dark and the only way the girl can see is by using the flash of a camera. it's in the original film which is awesome and a really scary way to show what's going on. i hope this film hasn't wrecked it.
The TCM camera flash sequence/style is based on the opening sequence in the original TCM where the hitchhiker was taking pics of the things he was digging out of the graveyard. The sound effects from that sequence has been used multiple times most notably in Marilyn Manson's remake of the song "I put a spell on you" which just happens to be used in the trailer for Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods.
i've watched the spanish version of silent house, called "la casa muda" and it was terrible. completely awful. i wouldn't recommend the americanized version because the trailer looks exactly the same as the spanish version.
after the silent house trailer i actually thought you would do "Rope" for if you haven't seen in you should effing die. Especially after you mentioned Alfred Hitchcock. They actually filmed that with as few cuts as possible so they would actually use shadows to hide a cut or give the audience the feeling that there is a cut
the photo thing in silent house is there because the polaroid camera is part of the storyline. That being said, horror trailers do overuse the effect. Also, the trailer looks 10 times worse than the original.
it pisses me off so damn much when they remake films by other directors. i mean i get it if the film was old and they want to give it a modern taste but when its been out recently its just unfair for the ones who made it
@caabmusic Yeah it's weird, because most monitors these days are 1920x1080. I think it's mainly because they don't see the need for it. Adobe Premiere and FinalCut both have presets for exporting to youtube at 720p.
@JobeeIce Most computer display can't show the difference. Even though they're 1080p, they don't stretch the resolution far enough to really show the difference.
haha Ryan I thought of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre right away. Not only the picture thing but also the narrator. "One of the most bizarre happenings in American History, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" complete rip off
Great choice on the IYHSIYSED this week. I've been studying and watching a lot of Hitchcock lately. There's a ton available on Netflix Instant Watch too including his Masterpiece theater stuff which is basically an old show that's a new short each week. Awesome!
@KuneMaster actually it's 12 min at a time. Maybe they shot it like Hitchcock's Rope where they choreographed to the film running out and picked the shot back up where the reel left off.
Mr. Connolly... did you just say "cousint?" I've gotten over the fact that you say "sawl" as in "I actually sawl a new-to-DVD movie!" But I don't think I can let pass "cousint."
I haven't spent much time in Southern Florida, so maybe it's just how everyone there speaks?
Either way, I love your show.
And, I was wondering how you feel about Wes Anderson films? To me, they're all the same but for some reason I like them... Check out the Moonrise Kingdom trailer.
I saw "La casa muda" and the concept was interesting of one shot but from the half and after that was TERRIBLE, the ending was so predictable and bad. So they making a remake i think is veeeeeeeery bad. I dont recomend you loose your time
Man, I was excited about Slinet Movie, but I hated Open Ocean as it bored me to the point we were talking about other stuff during the whole movie... So, maybe I'll see it on DVD or TV when it shows up
Awesome!! Going to have to check out all three of those movies now lol! Recently watched REC which they later remade in the states called Quarantine - REC was obviously better I think.
Awww. ^_^ Thank you for not threatening me today, Ryan. I'm definitely gonna rent a copy of Shadow of a Doubt for the weekend.
Also, I totally agree with Hollywood overusing the "picture-taking" shtick in their trailers. Plus I think the voiceover guy in Silent House also did other movie trailers that were "based on actual events".
Ryan please read this. Im from Uruguay, the film La casa Muda (the silent house in spanish) was the ispiration for Silent House. Its not a spanish film its an Uruguayan film spoken in spanish. @TheFreakRocker I'm from Uruguay too. I think Ryan meant "spanish" for the language; not the origin. Good to see another fellow countryman in the channel! :D
I think the biggest reason a lot of Hitchcock's movies get overlooked is the popular concept that most directors, even the great ones, only have one or two GREAT films in them, and the rest are just ignored. You ask someone to name a Hitchcock film and most of the time you'll get Psycho or The Birds, and a lot of the time they only know those movies by name, having never seen them. That said, up until a few years ago I'd only ever seen The Lady Vanishes, and that's still my favorite.
@AlexSandulache I want words and pictures, I'll read a comic. Besides how do you know they're delivering their lines well if you don't speak the language.
@speebyda Congrats you made my list as the most ignorant person in the world. Did you ever hear of a little thing called emotion in acting? Yeah that is a way to know if an actor is good in a movie without speaking the same language. Take Rec for example. Awesome Spanish movie .The acting was solid. Remade by Americans, turned out awful and corny as shit. So to sum up you don't have to Americanize everything for it to be good. In fact most of the time that makes the movie suck balls.
@mymarleyisgone Going to have to agree with your statement. I groaned in horror when I heard that they were remaking Oldboy. And then groaned even more when I heard Spike Lee was directing it.
@AlexSandulache Hollywood does not have ANY imagination... so many good stories and director's without a job and they just keep on ruin the foreign movies with crappy imitations....
For me The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) was the only good remake of this kind, although it's not a remake, it's more like a new approach to the book.

Silent House is a remake of "Casa Muda", a movie make on my country, Uruguay. The original was filmed on a Canon EOS D5 Mark II.
The events of the original story are in 1970s; the remake looks like it's in "the present" as for the father questioning for the Facebook Status.
The original was a "meh" in my ratings; although the (almost) one complete extremely large shot is very impressive.
Obviously I will have to watch the remake :)
