  • Silencio Cabasa

  • Can you make a list of the all the films the we should see or we die?

  • Shadow of a Doubt is awesome! As a tie-in to Silent House, Hitchcock's Rope could've been an interesting choice too. Not done in one continuous take, but the shots are as long as they could make them, considering they were limited by the length of film reels (around 15 minutes, I believe)

  • OMG me read wrong me thought Silent hill =3 Me feel very sad :(

  • ryan man , They did that cause pictures are an important part of the story specially at the end of the movie .!

  • i saw the Spanish version of the silent house and it was pretty creepy

  • Can I just say.....Wisconsin is not Alaska? Like we have winters and frozen lakes, but nothing so solid that you'd have to cut through. Um...yeah. I wish Film makers would give WI some love. That is all.

  • Although it's "supposed" to be all one take, I find it very unlikely that they actually managed to pull that off. Maybe they did, but it looks to me like there may have been a few whip cuts in the trailer giving the illusion of one take??? 07:03 for example, maybe?? I don't know.

  • For a movie that was supposedly shot continuously, it has a lot of quick cuts.

  • im in UK and can't use netflix,com/filmstate linky thing!!!

  • idk how to feel about about thin ice seems good, but im not sure in wat way.

  • Hey Ryan, if you like older period films, do you want to see The Artist?

  • what the hell is that at the end of the trailer for silent house? She turns around and it just looks like bad wallpaper that she's screaming at.

  • @coolero80 Thinkin' the same thing.

"OH NO....I didn't bring my bathing suit for the lake!"

  • I'm with Josh. I don't remember too many trailers doing the flashing picture thing. I did dig the guy's voice in the trailer though. I immediately thought of TCM when I heard him.

  • Shadow of a Doubt was my first and favorite Hitchcock movie! =)

  • It would suck if at 82 minutes into recording Silent House, somebody sneezes.

  • The editing for Silent House must have been really easy :)

  • How do you get 88 minutes from a 5D mark II without the chip overheating?

  • "..or if you're a big, fat film nerd..." Um, you can see me? Stalker.

  • @rhb111 Yeah, I agree! Please bring em back Ryan!

  • you should consider colorcorrect you some tan ;)

  • Is Silent House trying to take on Paranormal Activity? Cos it looks like one of those shitty films when they can make a new one every year!

  • Silent House is LA CASA MUDA parody!TOTAL!

  • I'm gonna take a shit right now, by the time I get back this better be top comment.

  • @TheseGuysProduction I'm gonna watch this video. By the time it is over, you better have some original comments.

  • @LogicIsForPussies what, are you Hitler?

  • My day is Delightful Ryan.

  • Silent House (La Casa Muda) it's actually an Uruguayan film. Great show and greetings from Uruguay!

  • @FilmState Ryan...About The Silent House: the original film is not spanish...it's Uruguayan. And I think the trailer has that "take a picture thing" because in the original film, Photography is a main part of the storyline...anyways, love your shows, keep it up!

  • Awesome reviews as always! Thanks for sharing!

  • the reason they use the taking picture technique in the silent house trailer is because in the film there is a scene where its dark and the only way the girl can see is by using the flash of a camera. it's in the original film which is awesome and a really scary way to show what's going on. i hope this film hasn't wrecked it.

  • i think hollywood just took another foreign film and made it suck... the silent house (original) looked way better

  • Continuous take? Nice. But how many takes did it take to find the right one? Are we gonna get to see take #1000 after 999 previous scrapped takes?

  • what cameras do you have and use?

  • Silent House is a remake of a foreign film

  • So much goodness! :)

  • wow the first hot olsen girl

  • It must've taken a BUTTLOAD of rehearsal time for Silent House.

  • "Cuzzint."

  • Fifteen minute ad and I'm not quite sure what it's even trying to sell...

  • Silent House.. "Hey, who turned out the lights?"

  • The TCM camera flash sequence/style is based on the opening sequence in the original TCM where the hitchhiker was taking pics of the things he was digging out of the graveyard. The sound effects from that sequence has been used multiple times most notably in Marilyn Manson's remake of the song "I put a spell on you" which just happens to be used in the trailer for Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods.

    yeah.

  • My cat was totally offended @10:04 lol

  • FILM NERDS RULE!!!!!!!!

  • FILM NERDS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i've watched the spanish version of silent house, called "la casa muda" and it was terrible. completely awful. i wouldn't recommend the americanized version because the trailer looks exactly the same as the spanish version.

  • after the silent house trailer i actually thought you would do "Rope" for if you haven't seen in you should effing die. Especially after you mentioned Alfred Hitchcock. They actually filmed that with as few cuts as possible so they would actually use shadows to hide a cut or give the audience the feeling that there is a cut

  • curse the lack of edit post

  • the photo thing in silent house is there because the polaroid camera is part of the storyline. That being said, horror trailers do overuse the effect. Also, the trailer looks 10 times worse than the original.

  • is there a list of the Effing die movies?

  • For Effing die you should check out Bunny Lake is missing. :)

  • I think this trailer had picture freeze because it seem to have shown Polaroids and camera flashes in the film.

  • Open Water sucked.. One of my most hated films of all time

  • 6:30- 6:35 funny :D cashew

  • can i just say that yalls little 5 second long theme song to the show is freakin catchy?

  • 2:57 Has Florida migrated North since I last checked?

  • i did notice it

  • Joseph Cotten is my favorite actor and Shadow of A doubt is one of my favorite Hitchcock films. Good choice!

  • falangle dangle; technical term for "peas." why did you bleep that out?

  • it pisses me off so damn much when they remake films by other directors. i mean i get it if the film was old and they want to give it a modern taste but when its been out recently its just unfair for the ones who made it

  • you should watch last man standing

  • I've seen it!

  • Mr. Ryan the pics are the for the story....

  • I noticed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre thing, but I haven't seen it in other trailers. And yes it is the opening scene of the original movie.

  • there are only a few movies that have done that. Russian Ark is one of them.

  • Netflix in the UK now.. YEAHHH!!

  • dat was funny josh

  • maths exam in the morning (on friday the 13, really?!) but come home to watch Film State.

Thanks for cheering me up Ryan :D

  • Shouldn't "Rope" be the "You should effing die!" movie? Being another Hitchcock film that started the one-continuos take thing.

  • i should effing die

  • why don't you export your videos to 1080p??

  • @caabmusic cuz 720p is perfectly fine

  • @nriaziat yeah, but just cause when u watch on full screen it would look so much better with 1080.. :)

  • @caabmusic yah ur right, but most comp. monitors, like mine, dont do 1080p. but it would look better

  • @caabmusic harder to edit

  • @caabmusic Yeah it's weird, because most monitors these days are 1920x1080. I think it's mainly because they don't see the need for it. Adobe Premiere and FinalCut both have presets for exporting to youtube at 720p.

  • @JobeeIce Most computer display can't show the difference. Even though they're 1080p, they don't stretch the resolution far enough to really show the difference.

  • @caabmusic Most computer display can't show the difference.

  • @ShakeAndBakeGuy i mean, I have an iMac and I CAN see the difference. I don't know about anyone else.

  • @caabmusic smaller file size

  • @caabmusic for a 10 minute video exporting at 720p is a HUGE time saver

  • @caabmusic not everybody can stream 1080p without lag.

  • @caabmusic You can't see much difference between 720 and 1080p

  • Rear Window was my favorite Hitchcock film.

  • title Silent H make me feel like it is Silent Hill so i want watch it so much...

  • haha Ryan I thought of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre right away. Not only the picture thing but also the narrator. "One of the most bizarre happenings in American History, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" complete rip off

  • Shadow of a Doubt is my all time favorite film. It really is Hitchcock's most underrated but best film he's made.

  • Great choice on the IYHSIYSED this week. I've been studying and watching a lot of Hitchcock lately. There's a ton available on Netflix Instant Watch too including his Masterpiece theater stuff which is basically an old show that's a new short each week. Awesome!

  • i Hate when horror movies say based on true events, they are so far from any real event its crazy!

  • Why are we watching trailers for movies from last year?

  • I didn't like Fargo. I hate that accent so bad I can't get around it and into the story.

  • YES, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre stared this effect... and actually in that trailer it looks incredibly creepy :D

  • They filmed Silent House with a Canon 5D MkII as a continues shot with no cuts. I thought you can only make movies up to 29:59 with that cam?

  • @KuneMaster actually it's 12 min at a time. Maybe they shot it like Hitchcock's Rope where they choreographed to the film running out and picked the shot back up where the reel left off.

  • One continuous take... that pretty sick! I bet that cameraman was tired at the end of the day.

  • Also, Alan Arkin and Greg Kinnear were in Little Miss Sunshine together. little factoid.

  • Mr. Connolly... did you just say "cousint?" I've gotten over the fact that you say "sawl" as in "I actually sawl a new-to-DVD movie!" But I don't think I can let pass "cousint."

I haven't spent much time in Southern Florida, so maybe it's just how everyone there speaks?

Either way, I love your show.

And, I was wondering how you feel about Wes Anderson films? To me, they're all the same but for some reason I like them... Check out the Moonrise Kingdom trailer.

  • I saw "La casa muda" and the concept was interesting of one shot but from the half and after that was TERRIBLE, the ending was so predictable and bad. So they making a remake i think is veeeeeeeery bad. I dont recomend you loose your time

  • Man, I was excited about Slinet Movie, but I hated Open Ocean as it bored me to the point we were talking about other stuff during the whole movie... So, maybe I'll see it on DVD or TV when it shows up

  • Awesome!! Going to have to check out all three of those movies now lol! Recently watched REC which they later remade in the states called Quarantine - REC was obviously better I think.

  • 9. March is my birthday O_o

  • Oh, and again, Netflix is now in the UK and Ireland.

  • @FiskyJay and Mexico lol

  • Just fyi, yes the camera noise was in the original Texas Chainsaw trailer.

  • Are you going to cover Moonrise Kingdom next week?

  • what a waste of a sandwich

  • "Thin Ice" looks terrible...but that may be for two reasons:

    1) I would either take my chances with the police, or

    2) I would kill the blackmailer

Whimpy, pushovers makes me want to hurt somebody!

But hey, that's just my opinion! :-)

  • Dial M for Murder was freaking awesome, i remember watching it with my Grands... Great show Ryan like always

  • Comment removed

  • Shadow of a doubt!!! Amazing... I've seen it like a dozen times and it still amazes me.

    Awesome pic! Ry (and Josh).

  • Awww. ^_^ Thank you for not threatening me today, Ryan. I'm definitely gonna rent a copy of Shadow of a Doubt for the weekend.

Also, I totally agree with Hollywood overusing the "picture-taking" shtick in their trailers. Plus I think the voiceover guy in Silent House also did other movie trailers that were "based on actual events".

  • Ryan if you had actually watched the trailer, you would get the picture taking gimmick. It seems like you are getting a bit opinionated and lazy.

  • The whole "picture taking thing" has A LOT to do with the movie, I've seen the Spanish version.

  • @AlexSandulache I think it's not about subtitles. It's about effing money! ;)

  • My schools cancled... what does that mean you ask?? Watch every flipping Film Riot episode ever!

  • You should watch the Uruguayan original of Silent House. It's great and was shot on a Canon 5D.

  • Ryan please read this. Im from Uruguay, the film La casa Muda (the silent house in spanish) was the ispiration for Silent House. Its not a spanish film its an Uruguayan film spoken in spanish. The budget of our film was less than 500 dollars, so its an ispiration for everyone who watched filmriot and filmstate. And the camera flashes in the trailer have a point for being there. PLEASE THUMBS UP SO RYAN SEES THIS COMMENT

  • @TheFreakRocker I'm from Uruguay too. I think Ryan meant "spanish" for the language; not the origin. Good to see another fellow countryman in the channel! :D

  • @TheFreakRocker

And the film is not actually done in one shot. VERY long takes, but some cuts are clearly visible. Nice film though.

  • That awkward trailer than has far more cuts than the film.

I would see Silent House, purely for the gimmick.

  • ohhh noo he's goin to kill me chikeoooooooo hahahahahahahahahahaha that made my day

  • ..But you guys are Southern?

  • Comment removed

  • so its like Alfred Hitchcock's Rope... the one take certainly did enhance the suspense in that

  • La casa silencio?

  • Today' "If you haven't seen it you should effing die!" was mor like.. "if u have seen it u should be effing dead"..lol

  • Yo, that silent house trailer scared the s*it out of me.

  • Shadow of a Doubt is my favourite Hitchcock film.

  • I think the biggest reason a lot of Hitchcock's movies get overlooked is the popular concept that most directors, even the great ones, only have one or two GREAT films in them, and the rest are just ignored. You ask someone to name a Hitchcock film and most of the time you'll get Psycho or The Birds, and a lot of the time they only know those movies by name, having never seen them. That said, up until a few years ago I'd only ever seen The Lady Vanishes, and that's still my favorite.

  • Imma gene wait for Tim and Eric instead.

  • Ok... Im going to Die now... I wil never EVER watch a black and white film

  • @wctje777 You're missing out on some really great movies... oh well, your loss.

  • @DemwOriginal i gusse i have to watch friday the 13th XD

  • is it that hard to read subtitles? do you really have to remake every decent foreign movie?

  • @AlexSandulache I want words and pictures, I'll read a comic. Besides how do you know they're delivering their lines well if you don't speak the language.

  • @speebyda Congrats you made my list as the most ignorant person in the world. Did you ever hear of a little thing called emotion in acting? Yeah that is a way to know if an actor is good in a movie without speaking the same language. Take Rec for example. Awesome Spanish movie .The acting was solid. Remade by Americans, turned out awful and corny as shit. So to sum up you don't have to Americanize everything for it to be good. In fact most of the time that makes the movie suck balls.

  • @mymarleyisgone Going to have to agree with your statement. I groaned in horror when I heard that they were remaking Oldboy. And then groaned even more when I heard Spike Lee was directing it.

  • @AlexSandulache yes because people are stupid and lazy

  • @AlexSandulache totally agree why not give it the El Mariachi treatment and just add subs

  • @AlexSandulache i barely even notice them, feels like i know what they're saying anyway.

  • @AlexSandulache Hollywood does not have ANY imagination... so many good stories and director's without a job and they just keep on ruin the foreign movies with crappy imitations....

For me The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) was the only good remake of this kind, although it's not a remake, it's more like a new approach to the book.

  • @AlexSandulache These are Americans we're talking about dude...

  • @AlexSandulache Well, I would say the anime fansub culture proves Hollywood wrong.

  • @AlexSandulache I know, but I rather see a remake than a dub. But subs work just fine for me.

  • lmfaoooo i loved the picture immitations. you rock playaa

  • "CHIKOO! CHIOOOO!! CHIKOOOO!!!"

    "... I guess I didn't see this trailer..."

  • lol ryans camera immitation

  • always a great way to start/end my day

  • sha bang bang my friend

  • Its friday the 13th, also awesome

  • "Why are you southern?" XD

  • FIlm State! I stayed up to wait for this. but never would I fight for first. what do you get? nothing! exactly

  • first

  • would I be first for such an amazing occasion?
