While I realize the law (here in Texas) makes Joe's actions legal, I had a hard time rationalizing "killing" someone over my neighbor's "stuff". If people are in danger of being harmed, sure. There's a recent case in which a woman shot an intruder breaking in to her home. I'm totally okay with that case.

He was also in his home and not being threatened in any way. @canadianwoman1961 Just because the dispatcher told him not to does not mean he does not have the right to defend his property, when he went out his door to try and see their car or where they were heading they were in his yard (the same place the police found them after he shot them) about 7-10 feet away if I remember. Texas law gave him every right to defend his property and himself at that point.

Joe Horn defended his neighbor and his property from felons. These guys were not some hungry homeless guys looking for food. They were hardened criminals who had an extensive record of -Violent Crimes-.

During the encounter, he ordered these men to stop moving, at which point they charged at him and he defended himself.

It's not about the "Value". Crime isn't that simple. The act of trespassing on someone's sacred ground and potentially injuring whoever is inside; this is not something you can measure in dollars as you are suggesting. Joe=Hero.
@Archedgar--The suspects were leaving the premises when Joe Horn yelled out to them. Yes, he ordered them to stop moving. To stop moving AWAY from him. He was not defending himself, he was defending his neighbor's property. The Castle Law is what was used to exonerate Horn. I won't bother telling you to do research, as I see no value in allowing this to devolve into something that resembles a fourth grade Insult-A-Thon.
And to your point about value, actually, evaluating crime, is simple.
@Archedgar--Most judges/juries, take into account, the value of the items stolen. Since no one was hurt or harmed and the value of the items relatively low(compared to say Bernie Madoff), the men would have been slapped with misdemeanor charges and probably given probation of some sort. Not Joe Horn's type of justice. Again, Horn has said that if he had it to do again, he would not have killed the men. So, it really doesn't matter if you or I believe his actions were heroic.

In each of the hypothetical situations you mentioned, I would very much have appreciated Joe Horn's actions. The problem with this argument, and I believe what even Joe Horn came to realize, is reality told a different a different tale.
@thegunit1400--No one was in danger. Not even Horn, as he killed the robbers when they attempted to leave the home. I respect Horn very much for saying that if he had it to do again, he would not have done it, because it shows that he considers human life more valuable than things.
I have not and will not, condone the actions of the burglars, as they were morally reprehensible. But have we really come to a point in time where human life is akin to the value of a few hundred $?
I totally feel your concerns but it is our constitution thats why Joe Horn wont go to jail read the 2nd amendment to the constitution, or just look up "the right to bear arms"and not just to have it, but that so in case that self defense was needed. and according to this case the felon had traspassed to Joe Horn's property and thats all Joe Horn was waiting for so he could shoot him. Because he represented a threat to him and he was in Horn's property.

No murder per Texas statutes. And a jury did not find him innocent. The Grand jury did not indict. Meaning they did NOT see enough evidence of the malice to warrant him going to trial.. The 911 tape is probably not the only evidence presented by the state to the GJ for consideration. While I realize the law (here in Texas) makes Joe's actions legal, I had a hard time rationalizing "killing" someone over my neighbor's "stuff". If people are in danger of being harmed, sure. There's a recent case in which a woman shot an intruder breaking in to her home. I'm totally okay with that case.

As far as I am concerned, once you cross the threshold of someone's property, with the intention of stealing from them or causing them harm, then you leave all your rights behind for the duration of the attack.
The police can not be on every street corner, 24 hours a day, waiting to protect us. It would be great if they could be, but they can't, so we all have a duty to protect ourselves, our family, friends and neighbours, and our property, when needs be.

He was also in his home and not being threatened in any way. Horn also later admitted that if he could do everything over again, he would not have killed the men--which tells me he has a soul and isn't itching to kill people, burglars included.

The man has even voiced regret about what he did, so at this point, I'm not really sure what people take issue with. I'd pick up the phone and dial 911 if I saw someone breaking into my neighbor's house, and let the police do what they get paid to do. I wouldn't grab my shotgun and go blow people to dust for a few DVDs and some cash. No one was raped or murdered btw.

Joe Horn defended his neighbor and his property from felons. These guys were not some hungry homeless guys looking for food. They were hardened criminals who had an extensive record of -Violent Crimes-.
These guys would not hesitate to injure, rape and murder someone given the chance. Joe Horn gave them a chance to stop and they ignored him. He did what he could to ensure the safety of his community.

During the encounter, he ordered these men to stop moving, at which point they charged at him and he defended himself.
Do some research, the criminals had a record.
It's not about the "Value". Crime isn't that simple. The act of trespassing on someone's sacred ground and potentially injuring whoever is inside; this is not something you can measure in dollars as you are suggesting. Joe=Hero.

He was not defending himself, he was defending his neighbor's property. The Castle Law is what was used to exonerate Horn. I won't bother telling you to do research, as I see no value in allowing this to devolve into something that resembles a fourth grade Insult-A-Thon.
And to your point about value, actually, evaluating crime, is simple.

@Archedgar--Most judges/juries, take into account, the value of the items stolen. Since no one was hurt or harmed and the value of the items relatively low(compared to say Bernie Madoff), the men would have been slapped with misdemeanor charges and probably given probation of some sort. Not Joe Horn's type of justice. Again, Horn has said that if he had it to do again, he would not have killed the men. So, it really doesn't matter if you or I believe his actions were heroic.

I have not and will not, condone the actions of the burglars, as they were morally reprehensible. But have we really come to a point in time where human life is akin to the value of a few hundred $?

No murder per Texas statutes. And a jury did not find him innocent. The Grand jury did not indict. Meaning they did NOT see enough evidence of the malice to warrant him going to trial.. The 911 tape is probably not the only evidence presented by the state to the GJ for consideration. It's real easy for all of us to try and second guess them when we are sitting comfortably behind an anonymous computer screen. I have sat on a GJ in the past. It was an enlightening experience to say the least.

Actually the two men were African Americans and he did have the right. Castle Law states that as long as the felon is there ILLEGALLY and is committing a felony (such as burglary) that you have the right to use deadly force and these two jacka** didn't take the hint and thought "Oh its a shotgun this can't hurt us." so the guy had legal right to shoot them.
