My mom used to dress like Maude; she was tall, too. I loved it. Great memories of the 1970s. I remember Monday nights at 9:30, just would watch the show to hear this theme song; I was only 10, so it was still a little above my understanding.

But the irony of a sassy 70s R&B song about a bossy self-befuddling middle aged white liberal is too funny for words. This just could not happen on TV today. The show was hysterical and a landmark. It also showed that liberals don't have all the solutions although they think they do, and can be just as wrong and stubborn as conservatives. But by 1978 the show ran out of steam like all the other social comedies of the 1970s. Just like fashion, tv shows go out of style as well.

So many people who watch Family Guy don't understand half the jokes in Famlly Guy, mainly because they are too young and uniformed . The show is constantly making reference to 70's and 80's life, pop culture and politics - the parady of Maude is just one example.

However, most people my age would not get them. I didn't get the maude one initially until i realised bea arthur was maude before the golden girls so i started to watch it. Isadora was the first "bra burner" and you're glad that she showed up. And when the country was falling apart, Betsy Ross got it all sewed up. The references to these 4 women are parallel to the character Bea Arthur played in the series Maude.
