i recall lightning and thunder at the beginning of a 6" snowfall here in Texas in 1986.

it got really quite afterwards and started snowing heavy and it did not rain before the snow.just cold air then clouds and light snow then lightning/thunder and heavy snow,rare back in the 80's

Now I realized 10 years too late...I guess I heard that there were 4-inch-per-hour snowfall rates in that town. This led to me having a bad feeling that the lapse rates at the mid-levels reached 7.4 Calvin/kilometer, and lifted indices went down as low as -3. The high snowfall rates meant that this was a convective snow with positive CAPE values to as high as 1,000-1,200 joules/kg. As convective inhibition dropped to 5 j/kg or lower, the capping inversion was gone and hence thundersnow came in!!

If you're going to try to be scientific, it's best to learn the science first. :) 7.4 c/km is celcius per kilometer, by the way. The CAPE wasn't nearly 1000 j/kg, more like 250-300j/kg elevated instability. mostly CSI within the retrograding deformation band in this case.

Thundersnow is such a rarity, but I actually went through it myself during the Blizzard of '93 here in Montgomery. I still recall seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder in the early morning hours of March 13.

Thunder snow looks so cool. Ive seen it a few times during noreasters. The sky lights up all orange and with all the reflective snow falling it looks amazing.

The windshield wiper probably isnt broken but just popped out of the slot. Funny though and it sucks to try and put it back with cold hands.
