Dont fear, my darling." says the singer. Don't be afraid. "The lion sleeps tonight." If the lion is sleeping, then it is not looking to eat someone.

Do you know I have never understood the meaning of this song until you gave me the French version in the title. The lion should be "dead" duh... now I understand sleeps tonight--How could I have missed that? I love this version, but everything sounds better in French including the one and only Celine Dion. I listened to her all the time in French.
