The arch shortens the distance the bar has to travel between the chest and lockout. In the USPF. the lifter still has to touch at or above the sternum (roughly). Just a note: Janet's arch is nothing compared to some of the arches that other lifters can achieve.

I still don't see why they arch their back so much. Some arch yeah but it doesn't look right to me. I could very well be wrong though.
