As for Kenjutsu/the Samurai, I've studied the subject a great deal. Yes, after the high point of the Samurai culture (which really didn't last all that long) they degenerated for the most part into masterless thugs...Ronin. Although there were a few very outstanding examples of Samurai who continued to exemplify the highest principles of both Zen and Confuscianism, among other philosophical traditions.
