US Congress banned export of the F-22 to not only Japan, but also Australia. Australia has begrudgingly sought the F-35 instead.
Perhaps Aussie should pull out and put their dollars into this Japanese plane instead. If they could get Canada involved as well, Congress might change their tune. It is a stealth aircraft, however, what you see there is a 1/1 scale model, that is the base of its design, but it has the platform alignment design, to reflect radar just like the F-22, and it will have thrust vectoring as well.

I first saw the tail, it's nothing like stealth to be honest. Vector throttle was tested since late 60's on X-31. Do research on YF-22 VS YF-23. F-22 was revised from YF-22 so much that it doesn't look the same at all, at least to some hardcore aviation guy. If anything, PAK-FA is 100 times more promising than J-20, and US > Russian.

@krittmasta Well that center stick hasn't evolved much, it was used in the Northrop F5 and F4 Phantom. Very old and robust. But the deal with the YF-23 was it never had a missile bay like the YF-22 did nor it never fired missles during the prototype stage like the YF-22. I believe in the YF-23 airframe but the problem was it was far underdeveloped due to the lack of funding and backing from its parent companies.

@TumisHumis, No it doesn't fits the bill. It's almost the same price. USAF contract 500 planes but they were broke, so they had to jacked up the price from 160M to 250M per plane. Where YF-23 would have cost 170M per plane. YF-23 also has way more room to grow for future fighter jet. Raptor is almost like generation 4.5 or 4.8. Real fifth gen is YF-23. You should lookup weapon upgrade config. I will hold up to 24 Mid range missiles. New missiles has hidden fins. Look it up.

I think Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Pratt & Whitney, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, & IHI Corporation should join partnership. Just like Russia and India on PAK FA & FGFA. USA and Japan should work together and share each other technology, avionics, engines, weapons systems, & design. The F-22 need to be upgraded in order to defeat other enemy 5th Gen. Stealth Fighter Aircraft. The F-22 & ATD-X would have same tech, same avionics, & everything same except the design.

国産戦闘機が配備期間の30年にわたってアメリカ製より高度な戦力を維持できるとは思えない。
韓国はアメリカ製を購入するから国産機ははアメリカ製を凌駕しなければならないが無理だろう。配備当初は一瞬だけ凌駕できるかもしれんが。

It is a stealth aircraft, however, what you see there is a 1/1 scale model, that is the base of its design, but it has the platform alignment design, to reflect radar just like the F-22, and it will have thrust vectoring as well.

@Akira89M Thrust vectoring is p. sweet. IIRC, though, it isn't as good for stealth as 2D vectoring - or what the F-22 has. It is debated whether pure vectoring - see X-44 - can not only control a plane, but keep it very stealthy as well.

@doommmmmmm Actually, this is missing some stealth characteristics that the F-22 has. Undoubtedly, this will be a superb aircraft. Japan has an extremely advanced military; a far more advanced military than China, Russia, or any other possible enemy in the future.
Lockheed is helping them develop this too, iirc.

@OnlyLifeMatters, F-22 factory was based in Texas, which the Cheif of AF's state. On top of that, Military hates Northrop for previous contract record. I can't blame them that a lot of people in this industry are just drags to the company. But that shouldn't stop them from picking the best plane.

@OnlyLifeMatters, J-20 is not a promising plane at all. Look at the characteristic of the plane and it has nothing to do with fifth generation fighter jet. I first saw the tail, it's nothing like stealth to be honest. Vector throttle was tested since late 60's on X-31. Do research on YF-22 VS YF-23. F-22 was revised from YF-22 so much that it doesn't look the same at all, at least to some hardcore aviation guy. If anything, PAK-FA is 100 times more promising than J-20, and US > Russian.

@krittmasta No you go back and do the research cause the YF-22 brought to the test fully funcitonal weapons and the YF-23 was still using technology barrowed from the F-15E. Not to mention had many delays. McDonnell Douglas went belly up as a result of spending so much money on the prototypes with hopes of winning the contract to stay a float. F-22 having a computer glitch isn't so bad compared with severe financial issues.

@krittmasta Wrong again, They used a lot of the avaonics, the front landing gear and the joy stick. The YF-23 has had many delays as with many Mcdonnell douglas projects from the 1980's. Remember the A-12 avenger fighter bomber for the navy? Canceled!. They put all their remaining assets into the YF-23 and lost. Thats why they are out of business today. You really don't know what your talking about.

@krittmasta Well that center stick hasn't evolved much, it was used in the Northrop F5 and F4 Phantom. Very old and robust. But the deal with the YF-23 was it never had a missile bay like the YF-22 did nor it never fired missles during the prototype stage like the YF-22. I believe in the YF-23 airframe but the problem was it was far underdeveloped due to the lack of funding and backing from its parent companies.

But, I know somebody that worked on it said that YF-23 made multiple flights 3 months before YF-22 lift off the ground. And I heard that YF-22 ding on the test flight too.

@TumisHumis, No it doesn't fits the bill. It's almost the same price. USAF contract 500 planes but they were broke, so they had to jacked up the price from 160M to 250M per plane. Where YF-23 would have cost 170M per plane. YF-23 also has way more room to grow for future fighter jet. Raptor is almost like generation 4.5 or 4.8. Real fifth gen is YF-23. You should lookup weapon upgrade config. I will hold up to 24 Mid range missiles. New missiles has hidden fins. Look it up.

A big factor in the YF-22 being chosen is because of superior lobbying from Lockheed-Martin and the fact that Northrop-Grumman had a shitton of stuff to build for the Air Force and the Navy.

1) Russian Jet characteristic of stealth is a fail.
2) Japanese hasn't been in fighter plane industry for at least 65 years. If they do, it is only for modification. First aircraft is never perfect. But if they get this far, the whole world needs to watch out.
3) Japanese is not good for invention but innovation only because of tight resources. I don't think 1 race is smarter than another, but Japanese's determination wins all. Imagine, you import metal and build cars and sell them cheap.

Japan should have been allowed to buy the F-22, they are a very dependable friend and a trustworthy ally. However this will be good for Japan, it needs it's own domestically developted fighter and it will help them advance vital technologies.

@NWA90s No, the F-35 will be replacing all CAS and MRFs in the US inventory (A-10, F-16 etc.) The F-22 will be an air superiority aircraft, while the F-35 provides close air support, and acts as a fighter bomber.
