I see you got a couple new glasses. I have that glass and love using it for trappist beers and higher ABV belgian beers. You should try Piraat Ale (a 10% ABV belgian strong golden ale)
I'm not sure if "dubbel" "Tripel" "Quad" refer to the exponential amount of malts used in the beer. I think it originally referred to how strong those beers are compared to a traditional Belgian ale.
Trappist beers don't tend to have good head retention and lacing.
Is this your friend you drove with from Atlanta to Davis? He doesn't sound like a Georgian either ;)
Nice to see more detailed, elaborative reviews :) Keep up the good work!
@ChadzBeerReviews I just did some research and I think I was misinformed. Quad generally means over 10% abv and perhaps with a stronger flavor than a tripel but...everything else is up for interpretation.
@ChadzBeerReviews In my program we haven't gone over styles very much, but just looking at the BJCP guidelines the alcohol content is the same for traditional Belgian Strong ale and a "dubbel". My initial assumption is that it more refers to the color and maltiness you can expect in the beer. As for the head retention, any high gravity beer is more than likely going to have poor head retention because ethanol disrupts the matrix of soluble proteins and iso alpha acids that stabilize the head. =)
That's awesome he got you the Abacus. I ended up buying 5 of those and still have 3 left. I guess I will have to let it sit around with last year's Parabola.
you're lucky. that's a tough beer to get and it's supposed to be REALLY good.

Great review... I've never heard of a beer "giving" great head... a beer "having" great head is usually enough to weird people out...
There is a lot of variation with these Belgian Styles... Beer strength is a way to differentiate, but color and different flavors also play a role...

@brewbeeranddrinkit
That may well have been a freudian slip on his part.

The one Trappist brewery I haven't tried yet.
Abacus is one of the best barleywines I've had. No need to wait three years for that one, it's fantastic now.

Good collabo!
I wondered why this one always tasted a little different compared to other quadrupels.
I've never seen it in that smaller bottle.
